Bamberg: Runz 1814 VI INTRODUCTION Poetry and science appear to be diametrical opposites in our modern culture, and it is difficult to find any com­ mon ground where these two areas of human activity could meet. Poets and scientists have found this common ground in nature, although their approach to nature is entirely dif­ ferent. Science deals with the translation of natural phenomena in mathematical terms, and literature transforms individual perceptions in poetic language. During the romantic period in German literature poets, philosophers, and scientists attempted to find a synthesis of science and philosophy in a new philosophy of nature and to elevate humanity and the world by aesthetic experience. Early romanticism represents a unique combination of ideas in German literature. Philosophical influences during this period include Kant's critical philosophy, Fichte's transcendental philosophy and its extreme subjectivity, and Schelling's nature philosophy, where nature is endowed with a soul that is the fundamental organizing principle in the world. During the Enlightenment natural sciences were dominated by Newton's discoveries in physics. These discoveries defined mechanics and optics until the 2 beginning of the 20th century. Many changes and new discov­ eries took place as scientists learned to observe nature and conduct experiments. The probing, analytical spirit of the Enlightenment was the driving force behind these dis­ coveries. Empirical data were collected in astronomy, geol­ ogy, biology, and other natural sciences. These data were organized and classified to bring a certain order in the observed natural phenomena. Chemistry was changing from a mixture of alchemy and practical procedures in the new industries to a new and systematic branch of the physical sciences. Truly revolutionary was the discovery of gal­ vanism at the end of the 18th century that led to explora­ tion of electricity and magnetism and to the connection between these invisible forces. At this time philosophy still tried to provide a framework based on philosophical concepts that would organize empirical data that were collected in different areas of natural sciences and to combine them with past knowledge and experience. The nature philosophy, which was mainly developed by Schelling, was initiated not only by the stimulus of Kant's writings on the sciences, but also as an answer to the extreme subjectivity of Fichte's Wis- senschaftslehre. Schelling and many others of the romantic period were not satisfied with Fichte's definition of nature as a limiting

LOEWENBERG Bar-Ilan University Israel School of Social Work The American model of the welfare state, incomplete as it may be, was not plucked out of thin air by the architects of the New Deal in the 1930s. Instead it is the product and logical evolution of a long histori- cal process. 19th century federal relief programsfor various population groups, including veterans, native Americans, merchant sailors, eman- cipated slaves, and residents of the District of Columbia, are examined in order to help better understand contemporary welfare developments. Many have argued that the federal government was not in- volved in social welfare matters prior to the 1930s - aside from two or three exceptions, such as the establishment of the Freed- man's Bureau in the years after the Civil War and the passage of various federal immigration laws that attempted to stem the flood of immigrants in the 1880s and 1890s.

But at the time it was built, it was really quite an advance for the gold‐seekers living in the area. The very first prospectors who arrived in the Georgetown region lived in tents. Then they built lean‐tos. Because of the Rocky Mountain's often harsh winters, the miners soon began to build cabins such as this one to protect themselves from the weather. This cabin, which is on the banks of Clear Creek, is an exception. This cabin actually has several refinements. These include a second‐story, glass windows, and interior trim. Perhaps these things were the reasons this cabin has survived. It is not known exactly when the cabin was built. But clues suggest it was built before 1870. Historic Georgetown is now restoring the cabin. The Tucker‐Rutherford House James and Albert Tucker were brothers. They ran a grocery and mercantile business in Georgetown. It appears that they built this house in the 1870s or 1880s. Rather than living the house themselves, they rented it to miners and mill workers. Such workers usually moved more often than more well‐to‐do people. They also often rented the places where they lived. When this house was built, it had only two rooms. Another room was added in the 1890s.

Born in France in 1798, Delacroix was orphaned at the age of 16. In 1816 he began his formal art training, learning the neoclassical style of Jacques- Louis David. Delacroix’s first major painting, The Barque of Dante, was accepted into the Paris Salon in 1822, earning him national fame. He turned away from the neoclassical style, and became one of the best-known Romantic painters, favoring imaginative scenes from literature and historical events. Highly acclaimed works include Death of Sardanapalus and Liberty Leading the People , a painting inspired by France’s uprising against King Charles X in 1830. In 1832, Delacroix spent 6 months in North Africa, and created many paintings inspired by Arabic culture and the sun-drenched landscape. Delacroix continued to be very popular in his lifetime, exhibiting many works in the Paris salon, and receiving commissions to decorate important Parisian buildings. Delacroix died on August 13, 1863. Art Movement Romanticism The Romantic Movement was inspired in part by the ideas of Rousseau, who declared that “Man is born free, but is everywhere in chains!” Romanticism emerged from the desire for freedom – political freedom, freedom of thought, of feeling, of action, of worship, of speech, and of taste.

    Bollingen Series, – Bollingen Series, named for the small village in Switzerland where Carl Gustav Jung had a private retreat, was originated by the phi- lanthropist Paul Mellon and his first wife, Mary Conover Mellon, in . Both Mellons were analysands of Jung in Switzerland in the s and had been welcomed into his personal circle, which included the eclectic group of scholars who had recently inaugu- rated the prestigious conferences known as the Eranos Lectures, held annually in Ascona, Switzerland. In the couple established Bollingen Foundation as a source of fellowships and subventions related to humanistic scholarship and institutions, but its grounding mission came to be the Bollin- gen book series. The original inspiration for the series had been Mary Mellon’s wish to publish a comprehensive English-language translation of the works of Jung. In Paul Mellon’s words,“The idea of the Collected Works of Jung might be considered the central core, the binding factor, not only of the Foundation’s general direction but also of the intellectual temper of Bollingen Series as a whole.” In his famous Bollingen Tower, Jung pursued studies in the reli- gions and cultures of the world (both ancient and modern), sym- bolism, mysticism, the occult (especially alchemy), and, of course, psychology. The breadth of Jung’s interests allowed the Bollingen editors to attract scholars, artists, and poets from among the brightest lights in midcentury Europe and America, whether or not their work was “Jungian” in orientation. In the end, the series was remarkably eclectic and wide-ranging, with fewer than half of its titles written by Jung or his followers.
