Photograph: Michael Reynolds/EPA The top leaders from world’s biggest technology companies called on the US to "move aggressively" to reform the National Security Agency’s controversial surveillance operations after discussions with President Obama on Tuesday, resisting attempts by the White House to portray the encounter as covering a range of broader priorities. Executives from 15 companies, including Google, Apple, Yahoo and Twitter, used a facetoface meeting with Obama and vicepresident Joe Biden to express their concern that the NSA’s wideranging surveillance activities had undermined the trust of their users. The meeting came a day after a federal judge ruled that the NSA’s bulk collection of Americans’ phone records was “almost Orwellian” in scope and probably a violation of the US constitution [2]. Some of the tech companies represented at the White House have already expressed deep concern at the wideranging nature of NSA surveillance, and the way it apparently draws information from their systems without their knowledge. -

RHINO REPORT February 19th, 2016 Ramsey Middle School Minneapolis, MN Volume 1 No. 8 Spring Musical FROM: Ms. Jolstad Registration is now open for the Ramsey Musical. This year’s show is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Ms. Wender will be directing, Ms. Kochanowski music directing, and Rush Benson providing choreography. There will also be classes after school on Mondays for “tech crew” and on Tuesdays for “costume shop”! There are lots of ways to get involved and make this an experience that showcases the talent in our Ramsey community! Students can register online or fill out a paper form, available from the Community Ed. office. The deadline to register is Tuesday, March 1. Rehearsals start Monday, March 7 (see flyer for week one schedule.) Tech crew and costumes start the week of March 14. There is a $55 participation fee. Scholarships and payment plans are available upon request: inability to pay the participation fee is NOT a barrier to participation! Casting will be gender blind (all students will be considered for all roles.) No previous experience is needed to participate in cast, crew or costumes. Everyone who signs up to be in the cast, will be in the show. Drinking Fountains BY: Chloe Bitney I have noticed that there has been gum in the drinking fountain, and I think it is very gross for everybody. First of all, drinking fountains are for drinking water and not for spitting gum, and although people think the water is gross, it is still a drinking fountain. Here are some gross gum pics to see. -

Cheng Associate Professor Rhetoric and Writing Department of English Rollins College Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 8 (2017): Bums and Bimbos “I just feel they’re bums. 95-percent of the game is bums…” --UFC Featherweight Champion, Conor McGregor “Fox viewers give low marks to bimbo @MegynKelly… ” --2016 Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump Despite terms like “verbal warfare” and laments over our “argument culture,” accusation and attack have received scant scholarly attention compared to their counterparts, apology and defense. Perhaps this neglect is due in part to there being few formal speeches of attack while those of apology from individuals, corporations, and governments abound.1 To address this imbalance in research, Benoit and Dorries devel- oped a taxonomy of attack strategies, providing tools by which scholars can analyze and evaluate the effec- tiveness of persuasive attacks.2 Legge et al. 3 and Legge and DiSanza’s4 work have extended that taxonomy. Benoit and Dorries explain, “once a persuasive attack establishes guilt to the satisfaction of the audience…there may not be much to be gained from further developing the target’s guilt.”5 Therefore, they focus on the act of wrongdoing rather than blaming or simply attacking the target’s character. Yet, even cursory attention to news and enter- tainment media reveals a ubiquitous form of persuasive attack focused on the target’s character: the persuasive personal attack. Not surprisingly, such attacks are commonly heard in sports where opponents “trash talk” to goad each other with insults, hoping for a psychological advantage in a game, and in politics where those campaigning for office routine- ly attack their opponents for character flaws. -

Do you believe in the constitution? In the Bible? Ted Cruz is not a constitutionalist, and therefore cannot be a constitutional conservative. He is an establishment conservative. Neither he nor Rubio are qualified candidates. But the birther question is only the tip of the iceberg: The most common tenets to support Ted Cruz deal with the following questions: Is Ted Cruz Constitutionally able to hold the Office of the United States Presidency? Within four weeks of becoming the new CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella laid out the major challenges that awaited him in the two letters he sent to everyone at Microsoft.1 He defined Microsoft’s battlefield as the “mobile-first and cloud-first world.” 2 That was where Microsoft needed to get its products and technology right, to build platforms and ecosystems and to integrate Nokia devices, services and the new mobile capabilities. In order to do so, Microsoft needed to zero in on a mobile and cloud-first world and do new things. In his view, “industry does not respect tradition – it only respects innovation.” And in order to innovate, he needed his 130,000-strong staff around the world to lead and help drive cultural change, to find Microsoft’s swing so that the team was “in such perfect unison that no single action by any one is out of synch with those of all the others.”3 Many challenges awaited Microsoft in its transformative journey. On platforms, the future of Windows was not clear. On devices, Microsoft needed to find ways to woo application developers to build its mobile ecosystem. On integration, the company had to find ways to transfer and to grow the mobile capability acquired from Nokia. And most importantly, Nadella had to figure out how he could achieve cultural changes to focus everyone on innovation via collaboration. Magleby The 2016 election had both continuity and change in how it was financed and in the under lying dynamics of the election. When mea sured in dollars raised and spent, the gap between nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was the greatest in any election since the era of more reliable reporting began in 1976. The gap between Clin- ton and her joint party fundraising committees and Trump and his joint party fundraising committees was more than $285 million. Given this disparity, how Donald Trump financed and ran his cam- paign was dif fer ent from other candidates in his ability to exploit free media coverage, his limited fundraising in the nomination phase, and his claims that his opponents in both the nomination and general election phases of the contest were corrupted by their donors. The financing of Trump’s campaign became more conventional in the general election, where he relied heavi ly on a joint fundraising agreement with his party, used their voter mobilization infrastructure, successfully tapped into contributions from small donors, and benefited from spending by Super PACs and nonprofit groups late in the campaign.
