PETE THE CAT NIGHT February 18th was “Pete the Cat Night” for three- and four-year- old preschoolers! They worked on many different types of skills and had 10 different activities to participate in to get “Pete the Cat nip” aka goldfish! Some activities included gross mo- tor skills - an obstacle course, scooters, and movement - and fine motor skills - buttoning, zipping, snapping, and cutting. They worked on counting, writ- ing numbers, coloring, gluing, and listening to books. It was a fun night to see preschoolers engaging in learning with their parents and showing us all what they can do! Part of the third grade Valentine’s celebrations was practicing Habit 6: Synergize. DO NOT LICK THIS BOOK! First Grade Team

First grade students are learn- ing about germs. It all started when Mrs. Moore read them the story Don’t Lick this Book. Together they brainstormed places in school that they be- lieved had the most germs. Then they swabbed samples to grow in petri dishes. Jessi- ca from the Iowa State Exten- sion office came and showed us all the germs on our hands. We took turns looking at our hands under a black light. She taught us how to properly wash our hands. We can’t wait to see how our germs grow! COWBOY CHRONICLES Elementary School News Germs, germs, germs-oh my! COWBOY CHRONICLES Elementary School News Germs, germs, germs-oh my!

ART ROOM SCRAPBOOK Kindergarten finished up our Jim Dine Hearts unit and moved on to creating hot dogs and cool cats. They first did a directed drawing to create a dog that is panting because he is “hot” and a cat with sunglasses because he is “cool.” The next class we talked about warm and cool colors and how artist can use this knowledge to make the viewer feel a certain way or for it to look like day or night, or to grab attention versus being more laid back. They turned out super cute! 3rd grade looked at the works of Vincent Van Gogh! We looked at his Starry Night painting and talked about the movement of the sky. We used this as inspiration as students creat- ed their skies to show movement in the wind. Then students created a winter landscape and used their trees to show space/distance on their paper. Loved these. Talking about winter landscapes, I’ve got to give a shout out to my 4th grade. The two worked on perspective, showing foreground, middle ground, and background by arranging their birch trees against their beautiful skies. They used the wet on wet method/bleed for the watercolor sky and talked about analo- gous colors. These are definitely showstop- pers. WOW. Frame these! They are amazing! 5th grade finished up a collaborative unit. They worked on mixing paint to create a full value scale. They turned their value scales into feathers and used line and pattern to create contrast to keep your eye moving. I stapled them together to make giant wings. This is such a beautiful piece. It is the perfect photo opportunity for you take of your youngsters! You can find it down by the elementary front office hallway (right by lost and found).
