Donald Trump Announcement of Candidacy Trump Tower New York, NY June 16, 2015 [Remarks as Prepared for Delivery | C-SPAN video] Our country is in serious trouble. We are not respected by anyone. We are a laughing stock all over the world. ISIS, China, Mexico are all beating us. Everybody is beating us. Our enemies are getting stronger and we are getting weaker. Politicians are all talk and no action. They will never be able to fix our country. They will never bring us to the Promised Land, and I cannot sit back and watch this incompetence any longer. Ladies and gentlemen, I am officially running for President of the United States. While I love my company and what I have built, I love my country even more. When was the last time the US won at anything? When was the last time we beat China or Japan in trade? or Mexico at the border? or anybody in negotiation? When was the last time we had a military victory that was so complete and total that the other side just said “We Quit!” It just doesn’t happen for the US anymore. Our country needs and deserves a comeback…but, we are not going to get that comeback with politicians. Politicians are not the solution to our problems-- they are the problem. They are almost completely controlled by lobbyists, donors and the special interests—they do not have the best interests of our people at heart. We will never achieve our full potential if we send yet another politician to the White House. They will grow government, not cut it--they will grow debt, not stop it. We are right now in a massive bubble that could be ready to explode—real unemployment in the range of 20%, artificially induced low interest rates, and a stock market that bears no relation to reality-- are symptoms of something that could be catastrophic. We better have a great leader who truly understands what’s going on. Our country has a debt which will soon pass $20 trillion. We have unsecured borders. There are over 90 million Americans who have given up looking for work. We have 45 million Americans on food stamps and nearly 50 million Americans living in poverty. Clearly, our so called “leaders” in Washington are failing us. They have failed to honor their sacred duty to care for our veterans and their families. They have failed to keep our military strong and vibrant. Through gross incompetence, we give billions of dollars of high grade military equipment to our enemies. Our President truly doesn’t have a clue! At the same time, the world is becoming far more dangerous every day. Iran is racing towards developing nuclear weapons. China is exponentially expanding its military power, ISIS is beheading Christians simply for being Christian. In Benghazi, Islamic terrorists killed our diplomats without any consequences. Iran and ISIS, separately, are taking over vast areas in the Middle East and with it the largest oil reserves in the world. Our President has no plan. The America we love will continue its decline because Washington is broken. We will never fix Washington from the inside unless we send someone to Washington from the outside. It is time for government to be run efficiently and effectively. It is time to get things done, and by done I mean properly done! This is our time to once again make our government a government of the people, by the people and for the people. That is why today I am declaring my candidacy for President. I will Make America Great Again! We will change Washington together and defeat the special interests. I am not a politician. I can’t be bought. I won’t be running around the country begging people for money for my campaign. I won’t owe anybody anything. I won’t be beholden to anyone except to you, the American people, if you elect me to serve as your President. It is time to take our country in a bold new direction. It is time to get Americans back to work. It is way past time to build a massive wall to secure our southern border – and nobody can build a bigger and better wall than Donald Trump. A country without borders is, quite simply, not a country. Mexico is not our friend. They are beating us at the border and hurting us badly at economic development. They are sending people that they don’t want— the United States is becoming a dumping ground for the world. It is of primary importance to take care of our veterans and their families -- to make sure that every veteran has access to great medical care and attention. Our veterans are our heroes but are treated as third class citizens. It is essential to rebuild our military so we have a strong presence that will send a clear message to our enemies that America is the leader of the free world. As President Reagan proved, there is only peace through strength. The government must honor its obligations to our seniors. We must protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, without cuts…there will no longer be any waste, fraud and abuse on my watch. ObamaCare must be repealed and replaced with something far superior and at far less cost. Likewise, we must greatly simplify our tax code. Our middle class, which has been totally forgotten, will thrive once again under President Trump. It is time to stop sending jobs overseas through bad foreign trade deals. We will renegotiate our trade deals with the toughest negotiators our country has… the ones who have actually read “The Art of the Deal” and know how to make great deals for our country. It is time to close loopholes for Wall Street and create far more opportunities for small businesses. It is necessary that we invest in our infrastructure, stop sending foreign aid to countries that hate us and use that money to rebuild our tunnels, roads, bridges and schools—and nobody can do that better than me. We have to stop Common Core. We must keep education local and under parental control. Unelected Washington bureaucrats shouldn’t determine what is best for our children. It is important for our allies to know they can once again depend on us. We will no longer bow down to our enemies. We must stand by Israel. We will remind the world that a threat against Israel is a threat against the United States. We need to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. We cannot allow a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. It is time to defeat ISIS. With a proper plan, it can be done quickly and effectively. It is time to get tough with the Chinese on currency manipulation and espionage. We will tax China for each bad act, and if they continue then we will tax them at an even higher level. Quite simply, it is time to bring real leadership to Washington. The fact is, the American Dream is dead -- but if I win, I will bring it back bigger and better and stronger than ever before. Together we will Make America Great Again! Thank You! Introduction by Ivanka Trump Today, I have the honor of introducing a man who needs no introduction. His legend has been built and his accomplishments are too many to name. That man is my Father. Most people strive their entire lives to achieve great success in a single field. My father has succeeded in many—at the highest level and on a global scale. He’s enjoyed success in a vast diversity of industries because the common denominator is him—his vision, his brilliance, his passion, his work ethic, and his refusal to take no for an answer. I've enjoyed the good fortune of working alongside my father for 10 years now and I've seen these principles in action— daily. I remember my father telling me as a little girl, "Ivanka, if you're going to be thinking anyway, you might as well be thinking big.” That's how he approaches any task he undertakes—he thinks big. He has employed tens of thousands of people throughout his career and has inspired them to do extraordinary things. He has the strength to make hard decisions and motivate those around him to achieve the impossible. He is an optimist who chases big dreams and sees potential where others do not. He leads by example and will outwork anyone in any room. He is the opposite of politically correct—he says what he means and means what he says. My father is also the best negotiator I have ever met. Countless times, I’ve stood by his side and watched him make deals that were seemingly impossible to get done. He has the discernment to understand exactly what the other party needs and then get exactly what he wants. My father knows how to be a fierce opponent, but also how to be a very loyal friend. When it comes to building bridges, he can do so figuratively, but also has the rare ability to do so literally—on time and under budget. Throughout his career, my father has repeatedly been called upon by both local and federal governments to step in and save long-stalled, grossly over-budget public projects. Whether building a skating rink in Central Park, meticulously restoring the exterior façade of Grand Central Terminal, enabling the development of NYC’s Jacob Javits Convention Center, creating a championship public golf course for the City of New York, or redeveloping the iconic, but underutilized, Old Post Office Building on Pennsylvania Avenue, my father succeeds, time and time again, where government has failed before him.

Donald Trump Is Not Always an Easy Man to Take Seriously. It's Difficult To

1 Donald Trump is not always an easy man to take seriously. It’s difficult to imagine the host of a reality TV show making an inaugural address or meeting with Pope Francis. It also isn’t always easy for some Americans to imagine the people who are voting for Donald Trump. When the image of Trump is paired with some of his comments that have an eerie resemblance to a history of racial demagoguery in this country, for some Americans picturing Trump supporters involves images of hateful people promoting ideas such as xenophobia and white supremacy. While it’s been revealed that some of the people who support Trump do in fact think that way, it would be unfair and inaccurate to attribute that ideology to all supporters. As Donald Trump wins more and more states in the primaries and other Republican candidates continue to drop out, it’s becoming increasingly more important to recognize and listen to voices of those voting for Trump. Their opinions speak to very real feelings among an increasing segment of the United States population. In the following case study, a group of Trump supporters express their reasons for voting Trump. Throughout the interviews many common themes appeared time after time in every interview. The themes are broken down into the following chapters: Trump’s position as an outsider and businessman, his public personality, the role of nationalism in the 2016 election, and the role of race and racism within what some believe to be a “postracial” United States. While I’ve included some analysis using other scholarly works in order to better understand particular viewpoints, the majority of this study is Trump supporters expressing their own reasons for voting for Trump.

Solomon Head and Liberal Arts Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences iii ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of the public memory of Jimmy Carter and the way the historical resources of his presidency (including his perceived moral character) are interpreted and evoked as a shorthand for presidential failure by associating him with a rhetoric of weakness. Broadly, I consider the nature of presidential memory, asking how a presidency passes from history to memory. I suggest that presidential histories serve as inventional resources in the present, with rhetors evoking interpretations of the past as rhetorical appeals. These appeals are acts of memory, and analyzing how they function discursively and are deployed strategically draws out how presidential memory works and what implications it has to presidential rhetoric. The different strategies used in remembering the presidency of Jimmy Carter are useful texts for rhetorically critiquing this process because Carter is often deployed as a rhetorical shorthand, providing a representative example of interpreting presidential pasts. I begin by considering the evolving scholarship and historiography on Carter and conceptualizing how presidential pasts can be interpreted in the present through acts of remembering.

Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton On

“Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton on the Campaign Trail” Paper presented to panel B10: “Responsiveness and Representation” May 31, 201, 10:30-12 pm, CL 305 Annual meeting of the Canadian Political Science Association Regina Saskatchewan, May 30-June 1, 2018 Abstract: A well-established maxim within the political leadership literature holds that most leaders, most of the time, seek to assure citizens in their public communications. The provision of such certainty is thought to be integral to the exercise of leadership: uncertain citizens seek advice and reassurance, and so they turn to political leaders who can provide such goods (Downs, 1957). This understanding has been studied empirically mainly with respect to male leaders (de Clercy, 2005). This study asks: do female political leader also communicate certainty and uncertainty to citizens and, if so, how may such messages compare with those of male leaders? The study focuses on Hillary Clinton, the first woman to campaign for the American presidency. Leader communications are evaluated by analysing the content of Clinton’s three televised 2016 presidential debate performances using Atlas.ti, a qualitative content analysis program. These findings are compared with the same speech sets for her opponent, Donald Trump. Then, these values are compared with similar data for a sample of two other male presidential candidates. The study finds Clinton fits the role of a classic transactional leader and given the small number of cases under study here, there seems to be no systematic difference in how she communicated assurances to citizens based on her gender. Trump Administration Allies Have Burrowed Into 24 Critical Civil Service Positions and 187 Last-Minute Appointments

Trump Administration Allies Have Burrowed Into 24 Critical Civil Service Positions And 187 Last-Minute Appointments SUMMARY: Following the outgoing administration’s “quiet push to salt federal agencies with Trump loyalists,” an Accountable.US review has found that, as of February 22, 2021, at least 24 Trump administration political appointees have “burrowed” into long-term civil service jobs in the new Biden administration. This includes at least four figures in the national security apparatus, nine figures with environmental regulators, three figures in the Department of Justice, two figures in the embattled Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and at least six other appointees elsewhere who have refused to step down in the transition. Burrowing of this sort is not treated lightly, as officials who transfer from political appointments to career positions must undergo scrutiny by federal personnel overseers for a full five years—and some of these cases have been found to violate federal laws and have drawn congressional scrutiny. However, there is a much wider slate of concerning Trump administration appointments that are not subject to such strict oversight: During the Trump administration’s waning days following the 2020 election, it announced 187 last-minute appointments to various boards, commissions, and councils that don’t require Senate confirmation. While some of these appointments have already drawn alarm for going to campaign staffers, megadonors, and top administration allies, Accountable.US has unearthed even more troubling names in Trump’s outgoing deluge. Similar to how early Trump administration personnel picks were directly conflicted against the offices they served, many of these late Trump appointments are woefully underqualified or have histories directly at odds with the positions to which they were named—and they are likely to stay in long into the Biden administration.

Twitter permits users to “block” other individual users’ accounts, and a blocked user account cannot directly see or reply to the blocking user’s tweets. President Donald J. Trump cre- ated a Twitter account as a private citizen in 2009. He has continued to use that personal account since assum- ing the Presidency, including to announce official ac- tions or policies. In 2017, President Trump blocked in- dividual respondents’ Twitter accounts from his per- sonal account after respondents posted messages on their accounts criticizing him or his policies. The court of appeals held that, in doing so, President Trump vio- lated the First Amendment. The question presented is: Whether the First Amendment deprives a govern- ment official of his right to control his personal Twitter account by blocking third-party accounts if he uses that personal account in part to announce official actions and policies.

To Melania — Prologue — Just Another Lunch “Grab ’em by the pussy.” The sentence that reverberated around the world on October 7, 2016. The quote was an excerpt from a recording that became forever known as “the Access Hollywood tape,” published by the Washington Post and aired on NBC News, a month before the 2016 presidential election. It had been recorded eleven years earlier, in September 2005, on a bus taking Donald Trump to make a cameo on the NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. Now infamously, Donald told TV host Billy Bush, “I’m automatically attracted to beautiful. I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy.” When the story broke about the tape I was deeply immersed in my oldest son, Zach’s, health problems related to his life-threatening food allergies and other issues that required many doctor’s visits and therapies. My middle son, Tyler, was transferring to a new school, and my daughter, Alexi, was adjusting to hers.

During the campaign he presented himself as an outsider, as someone who would upend the corrupt political elite installed in Washington and that had no real touch with the citizens. An elite that was fuelled by money and often forgot the national interests. Trump was right when he believed that voters were expected to show their dissatisfaction at the polls. This essay reflects on the reasons underlying his victory and aims at proving that nationalism and populism were among them. It also tries to demonstrate that nationalism and populism are still present in Trump’s policies. An unorthodox President who, till the moment, is merely following through on his campaign promises and rules over the Un-united States of America. Keywords: USA, Trump, nationalism and populism. A “Public” Journey Through COVID-19: Donald Trump, Twitter, and the Secrecy of U.S. Presidents’ Health Mark Fenster Abstract Donald Trump ignored numerous governance norms in his one term as U.S. President, especially those that prescribe disclosure of official and personal financial information. His brief period of illness from COVID-19, which he broadcast to the world via his Twitter account, revealed the complexity of Trump’s relationship to the concept and norms of transparency that presume information’s necessity for a functional and accountable state. At the same time that Trump offered little in the way of coherent and authoritative information about his health, he also provided an enormous amount of seemingly “inside” and direct accounts of the progress of his illness—indeed, much more than tradition and law appeared to require.
