I used to look forward to birthdays, counting down the days and weeks to Sept. 20 — usually starting around July 3 each year. When I had to do 200 math problems for homework in the third grade, I reassured myself that each equation brought me closer to that blessed day. I could only endure trips to the grocery store with my mom by lingering in the bakery section, ipping eagerly through the laminated book of Sesame Street and Toy Story cakes. Macfarlane, Enclosed is a copy of "Generating Influence," Common Cause/New York's comprehensive study of Entergy Corporation's political spending and public relations campaign to secure new operating licenses for the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York. As you are well aware, Entergy is currently in the late stages of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission license renewal process that began in 2007. While Common Cause takes no position on the relicensing of Indian Point, we strongly believe that the final decision should be based on objective analysis of the costs and benefits and not unduly shaped by the well-funded lobbying, campaign contributions, and publicity campaigns of Entergy Corporation. As such, it is crucial that NRC officials are fully aware of the extraordinary extent to which the appearance of "public support" for the Indian Point nuclear power plant appears to have been generated by the deceptive strategies of Entergy Corporation. In addition to the "inside game" of lobbying and campaign contributions, Entergy has engaged in an extensive "outside game" of public relations and grassroots "astroturfing" strategies. From making targeted campaign contributions and hiring former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to appear in an advertising campaign, to cultivating influential"front group" coalitions of business interests, unions, local political leaders, and non-profits (NY AREA and SHARE), Entergy is working the full spectrum of lobbying and publicity strategies in an all-out effort to keep Indian Point open.

  • Donald Trump Is Not Always an Easy Man to Take Seriously. It's Difficult To
1 Donald Trump is not always an easy man to take seriously. It’s difficult to imagine the host of a reality TV show making an inaugural address or meeting with Pope Francis. It also isn’t always easy for some Americans to imagine the people who are voting for Donald Trump. When the image of Trump is paired with some of his comments that have an eerie resemblance to a history of racial demagoguery in this country, for some Americans picturing Trump supporters involves images of hateful people promoting ideas such as xenophobia and white supremacy. While it’s been revealed that some of the people who support Trump do in fact think that way, it would be unfair and inaccurate to attribute that ideology to all supporters. As Donald Trump wins more and more states in the primaries and other Republican candidates continue to drop out, it’s becoming increasingly more important to recognize and listen to voices of those voting for Trump. Their opinions speak to very real feelings among an increasing segment of the United States population. In the following case study, a group of Trump supporters express their reasons for voting Trump. Throughout the interviews many common themes appeared time after time in every interview. The themes are broken down into the following chapters: Trump’s position as an outsider and businessman, his public personality, the role of nationalism in the 2016 election, and the role of race and racism within what some believe to be a “postracial” United States. While I’ve included some analysis using other scholarly works in order to better understand particular viewpoints, the majority of this study is Trump supporters expressing their own reasons for voting for Trump.

Johnson 2020 Brandon M. Johnson Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts August 2020 The thesis of Brandon M. Johnson was reviewed and approved by the following: Mary E. Stuckey Professor, Communication Arts and Sciences Thesis Advisor Stephen H. Browne Liberal Arts Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences Michael J. Steudeman Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Director of CAS100A Denise H. Solomon Head and Liberal Arts Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences iii ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of the public memory of Jimmy Carter and the way the historical resources of his presidency (including his perceived moral character) are interpreted and evoked as a shorthand for presidential failure by associating him with a rhetoric of weakness. Broadly, I consider the nature of presidential memory, asking how a presidency passes from history to memory. I suggest that presidential histories serve as inventional resources in the present, with rhetors evoking interpretations of the past as rhetorical appeals. These appeals are acts of memory, and analyzing how they function discursively and are deployed strategically draws out how presidential memory works and what implications it has to presidential rhetoric. The different strategies used in remembering the presidency of Jimmy Carter are useful texts for rhetorically critiquing this process because Carter is often deployed as a rhetorical shorthand, providing a representative example of interpreting presidential pasts. I begin by considering the evolving scholarship and historiography on Carter and conceptualizing how presidential pasts can be interpreted in the present through acts of remembering.

  • Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton On
“Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton on the Campaign Trail” Paper presented to panel B10: “Responsiveness and Representation” May 31, 201, 10:30-12 pm, CL 305 Annual meeting of the Canadian Political Science Association Regina Saskatchewan, May 30-June 1, 2018 Abstract: A well-established maxim within the political leadership literature holds that most leaders, most of the time, seek to assure citizens in their public communications. The provision of such certainty is thought to be integral to the exercise of leadership: uncertain citizens seek advice and reassurance, and so they turn to political leaders who can provide such goods (Downs, 1957). This understanding has been studied empirically mainly with respect to male leaders (de Clercy, 2005). This study asks: do female political leader also communicate certainty and uncertainty to citizens and, if so, how may such messages compare with those of male leaders? The study focuses on Hillary Clinton, the first woman to campaign for the American presidency. Leader communications are evaluated by analysing the content of Clinton’s three televised 2016 presidential debate performances using Atlas.ti, a qualitative content analysis program. These findings are compared with the same speech sets for her opponent, Donald Trump. Then, these values are compared with similar data for a sample of two other male presidential candidates. The study finds Clinton fits the role of a classic transactional leader and given the small number of cases under study here, there seems to be no systematic difference in how she communicated assurances to citizens based on her gender. • Trump, Celebrity and the Merchant Imaginary
ARTICLE DOI: 10.1057/s41599-018-0177-6 OPEN Trump, celebrity and the merchant imaginary Barry King 1 ABSTRACT This article explores the social ontological basis of Trumpism as a form of populism, historically defined as government by personal rule. For many commentators, the key feature of Trump’s presidency is its fundamental irrationality. The President has variously described as ‘dumb’, ‘greedy’, ‘psychotic’,a‘narcissist’ in the grandiose mode, and an ‘egotist’ unfit for public office. This article does not aim to dissent from these kinds of conclusions but 1234567890():,; suggests that they partake more of the statement of effects or consequences rather than causes. Indeed, if they are considered as causes they lead to confusion, a kind of ‘attention- deficit disorder’ (which, ironically, some accuse the tweeting President of being a sufferer). Rather this paper suggests that a more systematic examination of the President’s persona reveals it as emerging from a conflation of the discourse of the American family and a merchant imaginary. 1 Auckland University of Technology, Auckland, New Zealand.
