From the Back Cover From Donald J. Trump8217s Time to Get Tough147I love America. I8217m saddened by what I see happening to our country. We8217re being humiliated, pushed around, disrespected, and badly abused. Obama was a leftist experiment that has failed and gone horribly wrong, and everyone knows it. Even friends of mine who voted for the guy privately admit that he8217s been a huge disappointment. We cannot afford four more years of this mess. Our children8217s futures are on the line151and we have to come through for them. We have to get tough so that our country can be great again.8221 --This text refers to the edition. • Donald Trump Is Not Always an Easy Man to Take Seriously. It's Difficult To
1 Donald Trump is not always an easy man to take seriously. It’s difficult to imagine the host of a reality TV show making an inaugural address or meeting with Pope Francis. It also isn’t always easy for some Americans to imagine the people who are voting for Donald Trump. When the image of Trump is paired with some of his comments that have an eerie resemblance to a history of racial demagoguery in this country, for some Americans picturing Trump supporters involves images of hateful people promoting ideas such as xenophobia and white supremacy. While it’s been revealed that some of the people who support Trump do in fact think that way, it would be unfair and inaccurate to attribute that ideology to all supporters. As Donald Trump wins more and more states in the primaries and other Republican candidates continue to drop out, it’s becoming increasingly more important to recognize and listen to voices of those voting for Trump. Their opinions speak to very real feelings among an increasing segment of the United States population. In the following case study, a group of Trump supporters express their reasons for voting Trump. Throughout the interviews many common themes appeared time after time in every interview. The themes are broken down into the following chapters: Trump’s position as an outsider and businessman, his public personality, the role of nationalism in the 2016 election, and the role of race and racism within what some believe to be a “postracial” United States. While I’ve included some analysis using other scholarly works in order to better understand particular viewpoints, the majority of this study is Trump supporters expressing their own reasons for voting for Trump.

Browne Liberal Arts Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences Michael J. Steudeman Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and Director of CAS100A Denise H. Solomon Head and Liberal Arts Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences iii ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of the public memory of Jimmy Carter and the way the historical resources of his presidency (including his perceived moral character) are interpreted and evoked as a shorthand for presidential failure by associating him with a rhetoric of weakness. Broadly, I consider the nature of presidential memory, asking how a presidency passes from history to memory. I suggest that presidential histories serve as inventional resources in the present, with rhetors evoking interpretations of the past as rhetorical appeals. These appeals are acts of memory, and analyzing how they function discursively and are deployed strategically draws out how presidential memory works and what implications it has to presidential rhetoric. The different strategies used in remembering the presidency of Jimmy Carter are useful texts for rhetorically critiquing this process because Carter is often deployed as a rhetorical shorthand, providing a representative example of interpreting presidential pasts. I begin by considering the evolving scholarship and historiography on Carter and conceptualizing how presidential pasts can be interpreted in the present through acts of remembering.

  • Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton On
“Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton on the Campaign Trail” Paper presented to panel B10: “Responsiveness and Representation” May 31, 201, 10:30-12 pm, CL 305 Annual meeting of the Canadian Political Science Association Regina Saskatchewan, May 30-June 1, 2018 Abstract: A well-established maxim within the political leadership literature holds that most leaders, most of the time, seek to assure citizens in their public communications. The provision of such certainty is thought to be integral to the exercise of leadership: uncertain citizens seek advice and reassurance, and so they turn to political leaders who can provide such goods (Downs, 1957). This understanding has been studied empirically mainly with respect to male leaders (de Clercy, 2005). This study asks: do female political leader also communicate certainty and uncertainty to citizens and, if so, how may such messages compare with those of male leaders? The study focuses on Hillary Clinton, the first woman to campaign for the American presidency. Leader communications are evaluated by analysing the content of Clinton’s three televised 2016 presidential debate performances using Atlas.ti, a qualitative content analysis program. These findings are compared with the same speech sets for her opponent, Donald Trump. Then, these values are compared with similar data for a sample of two other male presidential candidates. The study finds Clinton fits the role of a classic transactional leader and given the small number of cases under study here, there seems to be no systematic difference in how she communicated assurances to citizens based on her gender. Global Journal of HUMAN-SOCIAL SCIENCE: F Political Science Volume 18 Issue 1 Version 1.0 Year 2018 Type: Double Blind Peer Reviewed International Research Journal Publisher: Global Journals Online ISSN: 2249-460x & Print ISSN: 0975-587X Trump, A Nationalist and a Populist Leader By Jose Pinto Lusophone University Abstract- In November 2016, against most expectations, even among some Republican Party’s members, and despite his lack of political experience, as he had never held any public office, Donald Trump won the presidential election in the USA through a campaign conducted against the political elite. During the campaign he presented himself as an outsider, as someone who would upend the corrupt political elite installed in Washington and that had no real touch with the citizens. An elite that was fuelled by money and often forgot the national interests. Trump was right when he believed that voters were expected to show their dissatisfaction at the polls. This essay reflects on the reasons underlying his victory and aims at proving that nationalism and populism were among them. It also tries to demonstrate that nationalism and populism are still present in Trump’s policies. An unorthodox President who, till the moment, is merely following through on his campaign promises and rules over the Un-united States of America. Keywords: USA, Trump, nationalism and populism. 2016 NHLA Presidential Candidate Voter Guide On February 24, 2016, NHLA issued a questionnaire to each of the presidential candidates from both major political parties with questions that were based on its 2016 Hispanic Public Policy Agenda. Each of the candidates was invited to provide their responses to these questions by March 25, 2016. As of September 27, 2016, no responses have been received from candidate Donald Trump. In lieu of his responses, information on the candidate’s positions are included based on publicly available sources. This voter guide will be updated when or if the candidate’s responses are received. NHLA does not endorse or oppose any candidate for public office. This document is based on the responses that were provided to us by the presidential candidates or their public statements. It is not intended to interpret, examine, or opine on any of the responses or the lack thereof. ABOUT CLASP The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) is a national, nonpartisan, antipoverty organization advancing policy solutions for low-income people. We offer trusted expertise, a deeply knowledgeable staff, and a commitment to practical yet visionary approaches to opportunity for all. We lift up the voices of poor and low-income children, families, and individuals, equip advocates with policy ideas that work, and help public officials put good ideas into practice. Our solutions directly address the barriers that individuals and families face because of race, ethnicity, and immigration status, in addition to low income. This brief is a part of CLASP’s Realizing Youth Justice policy portfolio. Realizing Youth Justice is an advocacy framework aimed at disrupting the devastating impact that criminal and juvenile justice systems have on youth of color and low-income youth. CLASP believes that strengthening investments in workforce, education, health, and mental health is an anti-incarceration strategy that supports youth across the spectrum of justice involvement, including diversion and successful reentry. 4 Introduction 6 Rolling Back Progress: From Rhetoric to Policy Change 8 Our Criminal Justice System is Out of Control 12 Selected Trump Administration “Unjustice” Actions 14 Promising Police Reform Strategies Under Threat 18 Reversing Progress in Strategic Prosecutorial Choices 22 Criminalizing Youth Culture and Immigrant Youth 26 Toward an Expanded Anti-incarceration and Reinvestment Strategy by Kisha Bird, Duy Pham, and Justin Edwards 29 Conclusion 30 Acknowledgments 31 Endnotes INTRODUCTION UNJUSTICE The numerous abuses committed by the Trump Administration merit a new term: Unjustice. • Trump by Michael Tomasky | the New York Review of Books
Trump Michael Tomasky SEPTEMBER 24, 2015 ISSUE Time to Get Tough: Make America Great Again! by Donald J. Trump Regnery, 216 pp., $29.99; $16.99 (paper) The Donald Trump situation, as anxious Republicans and mystified commentators sometimes call it, only grows more anxiety-producing and mystifying by the week. His performance in the August 6 debate was not considered world-beating. Then, in the wake of it, he was widely perceived as having made reference in a CNN interview to the menstrual cycle of Fox News host and debate moderator Megyn Kelly, which was supposed to finish him off. It was about the fourth such dose of poison but, Rasputin-like, Trump has survived each one.1 After the debate, he maintained his large lead over the field. Then on August 11, Trump held his first real campaign-style press conference, in a Michigan town just south of Saginaw. It was rich in the usual self-aggrandizing bluster—but he also showed that he can discuss issues and policy about as well as most of the GOP candidates. That is perhaps not the highest of bars, but he cleared it easily. On August 21, he held a large rally at a college football stadium in Mobile, Alabama. It seems safe to conjecture that for this native of Queens and resident of midtown Donald Trump; drawing by James Ferguson Manhattan, this was probably virgin territory. He filled less than 30,000 of its 40,000 seats, but the point was made that he could go deep into the bosom of the Bible Belt and draw a crowd that no other Republican could begin to attract.
