Ari Hoffman Dissertation Advisor: Professor Elisa New Professor Amanda Claybaugh This Year in Jerusalem: Israel and the Literary Quest for Jewish Authenticity This dissertation investigates how Israel is imagined as a literary space and setting in contemporary literature. Israel is a specific place with delineated borders, and is also networked to a whole galaxy of conversations where authenticity plays a crucial role. Israel generates authenticity in uniquely powerful ways because of its location at the nexus of the imagined and the concrete. While much attention has been paid to Israel as a political and ethnographic/ demographic subject, its appearance on the map of literary spaces has been less thoroughly considered.

  • Role of the Wife in the Jewish Marriage in Old Testament Scripture, in Jewish Law, and in Rabbinic Literature
    K. DaDon: Role of the Wife in the Jewish Marriage in Old Testament Scripture, in Jewish Law, and in ... Role of the Wife in the Jewish Marriage in Old Testament Scripture, in Jewish Law, and in Rabbinic Literature Kotel DaDon 1 Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb [email protected] UDK:2-45; 2-555;26-4 Original scientific paper DOI: https://doi.org/10.32862/k.12.2.2 Summary The article is divided into three main sections: the first section analyzes the wife’s role in the Jewish marriage, as well as various questions which are inseparable from her status in Judaism, such as social life, equality, and pol- ygamy. The second section deals with the institution of marriage in Judaism, the very wedding ceremony, and various practical questions which may arise during the wedding and later. These include issues such as the ketubah and divorce. In the last section of this article, the author seeks to present the Ju- daistic stance toward violence against women, especially towards beating up and raping, and he ends with the Judaistic view on how we should treat our wives. The author analyzes the aforementioned topics from the Old Testa- ment Scripture, the Jewish law, and the Rabbinic literature from the days of Talmud until today. The author breaks down these questions based on a seri- es of sources from the Rabbinic literature, from the days of Talmud, through the Middle Ages, all the way to the modern Rabbis, and the literature which has been translated into Croatian for the first time.

  • Nightmares of a Nation: Israeli Horror-Satires Rabies and Big Bad Wolves
Nightmares of a Nation: Israeli Horror-Satires Rabies and Big Bad Wolves by OLGA GERSHENSON and DALE HUDSON Abstract: The recent emergence of horror-satires marks a new moment in cinematic representations of Israel/Palestine. Rather than violence of war, these fi lms foreground structural violence within privileged segments of Israeli society through tropes of infec- tious diseases and solitary sociopaths. This article examines two widely acclaimed fi lms, Rabies and Big Bad Wolves, to argue that cynicism has replaced reverence over Israel’s foundational myths and institutions. A younger generation of fi lmmakers and audiences is willing to consider Israel’s role as both victim and victimizer; their horror-satires replace fears of outside dangers with fears of attacks inside individual and social bodies. ore than a dozen horror fi lms have been produced in Israel since 2011. Their emergence is not without irony, given the prevalence of horrifying violence in Israel/Palestine, beginning with Palestinian dispossession by Europeans in 1948; through military attacks by Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in 1967; and continuing today. Supernatural horrors might seem superfi cial by Mcomparison to these very real horrors. The release of these fi lms thus marks a new moment, both in Israeli fi lm history and in the history of cinematic repre- sentations of Israel/Palestine.1 Israeli producers and distributors may be taking advantage of horror’s global popularity, but a new generation of Israeli fi lm- makers is reworking global horror tropes and fi gures to address local concerns. Rather than revisiting historical traumas, such as European anti-Semitism or the so-called Arab-Israeli confl ict, they rework horror conventions to satirize, how- ever cynically and ambivalently, the banality of everyday violence as it consumes 1 Studies include Ella Shohat, Israeli Cinema: East/West and the Politics of Representation (1989), rev.
