Acer japonicum ‘Green Cascade’ Full Moon Maple ‘Green Cascade’ is a small mounded tree with a weeping . It typically grows to only 4-5' tall and to 6-8' wide over the first 10 years. Finely-dissected emerald green leaves develop orange and red fall colors. should only be considered for the upper Gulf Coast such as the northern suburbs of Houston. From my experience they do not appear to thrive planted in the ground in Houston. However grown in pots they are fine.

Acer oliverianum subsp. formosanum or Oliver Maple. A fast growing maple from that is home in the Gulf Coast. Tolerant of all soil types though like all the requires good drainage. The Oliver maples are usually the first to flush out in the spring and the last to change a magnificent red and burgundy combination in the fall. The trunk retains a bright green bark until older. Cultivars

“Sabi” is a Red Tree Farms introduction. It is the most vigorous colorful variegated Japanese maple performing in East Texas. Flushes early in spring with magenta marginated leaves with the magenta fading to a white margin on the leaf duing the summer. In the fall the leaves turn burgundy or orange in the green parts of the leaves and lavender in the lighter margins. An incredible improvement of the famous Japanese cultivar Higa-sayama which undoubtedly it was begot. Extremely Limited. Call for sizes and pricing.

Acer pictum var. ambiguum, Painted Maple These are the real thing. Grown from from isolated trees so no interspecific hybridization occurred. Leaves emerge with bronze, pink or burgundy tints in spring, mature to dark green by summer and turn attractive shades of orange in fall. Acer sieboldianum or commonly called “Siebold’s Maple”. The species is a beautiful maple with bright green leaves that is native to Japan. The young leaves in spring are downy with white hairs, with the underside of the leaf remaining hairy all summer, a feature useful in distinguishing it from the related or the Japanese maple. Fall color is outstanding with brilliant oranges and reds. Prefers sun/partial shade in well-drained soil. Protect from hot afternoon sun in Houston area like the Japanese maples. Acer sempervirens Cretan Maple named for the island of Crete. Acer sempervirens is a species of maple native to southern Greece and southern Turkey. It is an evergreen small waxy leaved or small tree, one of the very few evergreen species of maples. Reminiscent of the native Live Oaks but with trident shaped leaves. It slowly grows ultimately to 25 feet. Tolerable of many soil types. Great for most of Texas and the Gulf Coast. Great for bonsai training. Rarely found for sale.

Acer truncatum Shantung Maple or Purple Blow Maple A vigorous medium sized tree from China adaptable to the various soils types and the great variation of temperatures experienced in Texas and the Gulf Coast. New spring foliage can be a mauve or reddish purple, turning to a medium dark green for

the summer and then changes to bright yellow in fall. Leaf shapes are very variable ranging from the form of sugar maples to sweet gums.
