Managing Political Risk in Global Business: Beiersdorf 1914-1990 Geoffrey Jones Christina Lubinski 1 Abstract This working paper examines corporate strategies of political risk management during the twentieth century. It focuses especially on Beiersdorf, a German-based pharmaceutical and skin care company. During World War 1 the expropriation of its brands and trademarks revealed its vulnerability to political risk. Following the advent of the Nazi regime in 1933, the largely Jewish owned and managed company, faced a uniquely challenging combination of home and host country political risk. The paper reviews the firm's responses to these adverse circumstances, challenging the prevailing literature which interprets so-called "cloaking" activities as one element of businesses’ cooperation with the Nazis. The paper departs from previous literature in assessing the outcomes of the company’s strategies after 1945. It examines the challenges and costs faced by the company in recovering the ownership of its brands. While the management of distance became much easier over the course of the twentieth century because of communications -

Reflections of Ernst Bloch's Ungleichzeitigkeit in the Novels Of
doi:10.23963/cnp.2019.4.3.12 About the decapitation of corpses – Reflections of Ernst Bloch’s Ungleichzeitigkeit in the novels of Klaus Mann (including a glimpse into the present) Manuel Theophil* Abstract With the help of the term Ungleichzeitigkeit the German philosopher Ernst Bloch tried to comprehend the emergence of Nazism. Bloch was not satisfied with the typical Marx- ist explanation that fascism can simply be understood as capitalism’s last hope. Instead, he focused on dreams, wishes, and worldviews which seemed to be misplaced in the present and, thus, were ignored or considered as reactionary by the political left. Bloch demonstrated how the Nazis were able to exploit these Ungleichzeitigkeiten by address- ing them in their propaganda. The objective of this paper is not only to introduce the notion of Ungleichzeitigkeit in its historical context but also to show in which ways this political term is reflected in the novels of Klaus Mann. As Mann, at first glance, may seem as a rather unexpected candidate for such an endeavour, the text starts with out- lining the relationship Bloch and Mann had during the 1920s and 1930s. The paper ends with a brief look at today’s Ungleichzeitigkeiten and their reflections in contempo- rary German literature. Miller This dissertation examines the adult’s endeavor to revisit childhood trauma in four sets of literary texts that are not typically studied together. These works, all published after 1968, address the central problem of revisiting childhood trauma in order to open a potential for mourning and sometimes for healing. -

Schlüsselwörter Klaus Mann, Suizid, Homosexualität, Sucht, Todessehnsucht Summary „I simply cannot bear life anymore.” – Pathways to author Klaus Mann’s suicide. Klaus Mann (1906–1949), son of famous author Thomas Mann, was a very successful poet himself. He was also a central figure among German exiled authors. Klaus Mann’s early suicide at the age of 42 raises legitimate questions concerning his suicidal motivation. His homosexuality, his drug addiction, and the definite accumulation of suicides in the large Mann family will have been significant risk factors. From a biographical point of view, it is striking that in his childhood and youth already, Klaus Mann was inspired by an enormous longing for death. Keywords Klaus Mann, Suicide, Homosexuality, Addiction, Yearning for Death Aktualität und Bedeutung von Klaus Mann Jeder interessierte Literaturwissenschaftler oder Suizidforscher sollte sich mit dem Leben und Werk von Klaus Mann beschäftigen. -
Press Release
PRESS RELEASE Beiersdorf commemorates the 150th birthday of NIVEA’s founding father Oscar Troplowitz – Hamburg‘s Kunsthalle hosts exhibition Troplowitz the entrepreneur: from laboratory to global corporation Troplowitz the brand pioneer: use of modern design and advertising Troplowitz the philanthropist: committed to social issues Hamburg, January 17, 2013 - Oscar Troplowitz wasn’t just one of the first men to introduce product branding in Germany, he also invented NIVEA Creme and is one of the most brilliant entrepreneurs of his age. As a parliamentarian, Troplowitz supported social reform. He was a modest philanthropist, a far-sighted collector and a generous patron of the arts. Troplowitz acquired the Beiersdorf laboratory, which manufactured medical plasters, in 1890 and transformed it into a flourishing global company with an international reputation. On January 18 it would have been his 150th birthday. Pharmacist Troplowitz proved to be a pioneer with exceptional business acumen who established design awareness as a factor of success through Beiersdorf. He built up the company’s export business, developed innovative products and pro-actively marketed them. Yet despite being a successful entrepreneur, he always put his employees and customers first. As a result of his commitment to social issues and generosity Troplowitz was able to establish a very positive working climate that fostered mutual respect. Even today Troplowitz’s initiatives still shape the Beiersdorf corporate culture and many things at the company still have his ‘signature’ on them. The company headquarters are still located in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel on a piece of land purchased by Troplowitz in 1892. Many of the products and brands that Troplowitz developed can still be found on the shelves of retail outlets today. -

Memoriales Schreiben Und Phänomene Der Literarischen Erinnerung Bei Walter Benjamin, Ernst Jünger Und Friedo Lampe
ABSTRACT Title of Document: MEMORIALES SCHREIBEN UND PHÄNOMENE DER LITERARISCHEN ERINNERUNG BEI WALTER BENJAMIN, ERNST JÜNGER UND FRIEDO LAMPE Katharina Rudolf, PhD, 2010 Directed By: Professor Peter Beicken, Department of Germanic Studies This study introduces the concept of “memoriales Schreiben” (‘memorial writing’) as a literary mode that differs from the chronological narratives of traditional autobiographies. In the Introduction, I place “memoriales Schreiben” in the context of the theories of memory, including Maurice Halbwachs’s “kollektives Gedächtnis” (‘collective memory’) and Aleida and Jan Assmann’s “kulturelles Gedächtnis” (’cultural memory’). Examining the literary modes and techniques of remembering and narrating memories and focusing on “Gedächtnisarbeit” (‘memory work’), and “Gedächtnisräume” (’spaces of memory’), I discuss works by three authors who share many generational experiences although their works left very different marks on German literature and culture: Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), Ernst Jünger (1895-1998), and Friedo Lampe (1899-1945). Chapter One analyzes Benjamin’s Berliner Chronik and Berliner Kindheit um neunzehnhundert . As the revising of these childhood memories evidences, Benjamin’s “memoriales Schreiben” transforms the autobiographical into a ‘memory work’ that reflects the intersection of personal story and general history. Chapter Two examines Jünger’s output after his initial WWI diary turned narrative, In Stahlgewittern . Works such as Afrikanische Spiele and Das Abenteuerliche Herz reveal fictionalized autobiographical material while Auf den Marmorklippen deals with cultural and contemporary memory. Chapter Three investigates Lampe’s two novels and some short stories printed despite the Nazi publishing restrictions. His ‘memorial writing’ serves as a cultural recollection of times that faded from memory during the Nazi period.
