It is an inspiring facility and location, and it has taken the hard work of many individuals to make it a reality. At UCSB in the 1980’s and 1990’s, Marine Science facilities could be described as dispersed, inadequate, and not up to the standards of a world class research institution. Long-standing efforts to get a facility approved and built had met with no success. However, things began to change with the identification of a State of California program that provided a financing mechanism for research facilities dedicated to long-term scientific activities. After much hard work, the University of California’s Office of the President in March 2000 approved the capital improvement project known as the Marine Science Research Building. A building would be built, but it would be paid for by a portion of the research dollars the UCSB Marine Science community received every year through competitive federal grant and contract awards. In 2005 the nearly 40,000 square foot facility opened, on time and on budget. It features laboratory and office space, conference rooms and an auditorium, shared instrumentation facilities, and running sea water. In the pages that follow, you have an opportunity to read about the many research projects administered by the Marine Science Institute. I would like to extend my thanks to the long list of researchers who contribute so much to the University of California, Santa Barbara campus, with special thanks for their vision, tenacity, and commitment that resulted in the Marine Science Research Building. Sincerely, Mark Brzezinski, Director Marine Science Institute 4 Organizational Charts 5 ANNUAL REPORT | 2013-2014 MARINE SCIENCE INSTITUTE 2013–2014 ORGANIZATIONAL CHART Mark Brzezinski Dan Reed Director Deputy Director Tim Schmidt Administration Manager Jim Woods Monica Pessino Bonnie Williamson Joyce Wolever Kayla Jackson Luisa Velez C & G Admin Personnel Unit Budget Unit Systems/Network Ocean o' Graphics Purchasing Analyst Administrator Creative Director Manager Manager Manager Casey Morse Molly Thomson Purchasing Analyst Brian Emery Judy McCaslin Nicole Zavala India Morgan Graphic Designer Server Support C & G Officer Personnel Analyst Budget Analyst and Web Developer Deanna Cervantes Marisol Hernández Laura Susin C & G Analyst Personnel Analyst Budget Analyst Veronica Perez Jenny Chu Personnel Analyst Budget Analyst Donna Dobis Travel Coordinator MARINE SCIENCE INSTITUTE 2013–2014 ORGANIZATIONAL CHART Mark Brzezinski Director Dan Reed Deputy Director Marine Analytical Coastal Reseach Ocean & Coastal Biotechnology Laboratory Marine Science Center Center Policy Center Georges L.
