Jean is happily baking cookies for an upcoming visit with the Aizenstein and Baumann family, volunteers she has been visiting with since United Way’s Open Your Heart to a Senior (OYHS) initiative connected them two years ago with her and her late husband, Meyer. When Jean first learned about OYHS, she was caring for Meyer, her husband of over 60 years, and the two found it difficult to leave their home. A friend advised Jean to contact AgeWell Pittsburgh to inquire about services to help seniors who are homebound. AgeWell is a United 4 Way partner agency of the Open Your Heart to a Senior program. Initially, Meyer received visits from volunteer Howard Aizenstein and his teenage son, Simon. “The time they spent with him was so precious,” said Jean. “It was just the ticket Meyer needed. It was special time just for him. I’ll always be grateful for what they gave him.” About a year into their OYHS relationship, Meyer passed away. A couple weeks after, Howard called Jean to ask if his family could continue visiting. “I was so touched. Howard’s wife, Barbara, and daughter, Evie, started to come, too,” Jean said.The Aizenstein and Baumann family has been visiting Jean for over a year now, and they’ve formed a bond that keeps Jean going. United Way’s 21 and Able Program helps students like Kenny, who can have difficulty getting and keeping a job after high school. In partnership with Giant Eagle, and the University of Pittsburgh, the United Way-funded Career Transitions Project recruits high school students with disabilities for part-time jobs and provides on-site job coaching to help them transition from school to the workplace. 9 Kenny works at a nearby Giant Eagle. The Project has taught him important skills: how to get along with managers and co-workers, how to take direction, and how to cope with everyday work stress. “I try to do a good job and be the bright spot in someone’s day,” he says. It’s been a winning strategy. Kenny’s infectious good nature has endeared him to store regulars.

Melissa, 33, knows what it’s like to survive on nothing. As a child, she remembers eating at homeless shelters and moving around a lot to different schools. So, when she suddenly lost her job in June 2017, she did everything she could to keep from losing her apartment. Melissa called United Way’s PA 2-1-1 Southwest and was referred to the 14 YWCA’s Women’s Empowerment Initiative, funded by United Way’s United for Women initiative. She walked into their office and asked for an appointment. Within a couple days, Melissa got the necessary paperwork together to apply for assistance. She was approved for $500 in assistance that helped her complete her rent payment and stay afloat until she started receiving unemployment.

Alijah first joined the mentoring program at Brookline Elementary in 6th grade, because he was interested and wanted to try something new. He was matched with James Doyle, a Pittsburgh Public Schools 18 employee who could offer valuable insight into high school and beyond. “It was great to meet a new person, and we connected like family,” Alijah says. “James is a resource for me for college and the future.” Alijah has plans to take college engineering, math, computer and science classes in order to gain the skills needed to reach his goals. “James says to always do your work, pay attention, go to school so that you can meet your goals and have a good future,” he says.

Growing up, Luke was always encouraged by his parents to dream big and work hard. Living with a disability has been, at times, a challenge for Luke, but he’s never let anything get in the way of his goals. “There are a few things that I have trouble with, but I’m not going to let that keep me down. I’m going to keep living my life,” Luke explained.

34 After completing college, he discovered United Way’s Career Transition Project, which helps people with disabilities find employment suited to their skills and goals. “I contacted the program to learn about jobs,” Luke explained. “We went over interview questions, and it helped me out a lot.” He applied for a payroll clerk position with Allegheny County, where Ray Weithorn, Allegheny County’s in-house United Way Career Transition Professional, helped him through the process. 40 “Women helping women is how it’s supposed to be.”

After spending her early career as a high school teacher, Sarah moved to Pittsburgh with her husband. When she became pregnant, she decided to stay at home to raise their children. Twelve years into their marriage, the relationship ended. Sarah was now a single mother raising three children. Sarah took a contract job as a recruiter with the expectation it would evolve into a full-time position. Sadly, Sarah was suddenly let go after the company lost several large contracts. 73 Finding herself alone, unemployed and caring for three children, she was scared and unsure of where to turn. Sarah’s friend, Caitlin, encouraged her to reach out to United Way’s PA 2-1-1 Southwest. Through United Way’s United for Women initiative, which helps women like Sarah who are experiencing an unexpected, temporary crisis, Sarah was able to catch up on her rent and utility bills. She found a job at Wesley Family Services, and with her newfound employment and help from the United for Women grant, she was able to get back on her feet. YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THANK YOU.
