2 Offspring Issue 1, 2020 Offspring Issue 1, 2020 Message from the President Deidre Kelley I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and did something special for December 7 in memory of our Pearl Harbor Survivors. Plans for the 2020 Convention are coming along nicely. In this issue of the Offspring, you will find the registration form and hotel reservation information. Please make your hotel reservation, complete the registration form, and return with your check to Carol Gladys, SDPHS National Secretary, as soon as possible. The deadline for accepting registrations is October 1, 2020. Planned activities include a trolley tour of the historic Savannah district, Savannah Theatre Christmas Show, and visit to the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force.

This year, SDPHS is accepting applications for its Scholarship program. A scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is awarded every two years on August 15th. It’s funded by contributions, gifts, bequests and other sources. To be eligible to receive the Scholarship, applicants must be accepted or enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university, trade or technical school; be an active member of SDPHS; and a citizen of the United States. Any application that does not meet all three criteria will be automatically rejected. If you or a family member would like to apply for the scholarship but are not a member of SDPHS, there is still time to apply. The application deadline (postmarked by) is June 6, 2020. Payment of the Scholarship Award will be issued by the SDPHS Treasurer directly to the Bursar or Finance Office of the student’s enrolled educational institution. Applications for the Scholarship can be downloaded from the organization website at www.sdphs.org.

Memorial Day, May 28 will be here before you know it. Hopefully the COVID-19 pandemic will be over and things will be back to normal. If possible, make plans to honor our Pearl Harbor Survivors and other WWII veterans at any events that may be taking place near you or organize your own event. If you are not able to march in a parade, maybe you can attend as a spectator dressed in your SDPHS shirt and hat. Let people know who you are and who you represent. Take pictures, write a short article, and submit to Eric Miller, temporary Offspring Editor, for publication in the next issue. “Pearl Harbor~December 7, 1941~Lest We Forget”

Thank you and please stay safe and well. Deidre Kelley

Members of SDPHS Bluebonnet Chapter 3, Houston, attended the Pearl Harbor Day Memorial Ceremony on Saturday, December 7, 2019 hosted by The Companions of the Commandery. Due to the closure of the Texas, the annual event was relocated to Seawolf Park on Pelican Island in Galveston. Members Reba Watson (Treasurer) and Jill Allen (Vice President) placed a Pearl Harbor Memorial Wreath at the Ceremony in memory of those who were lost and in honor of those who survived.

Tom Gillette gave the keynote address. Tom served in the Navy from 1952 to 1955. Tom and his family were living near Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 as his father, Rear Claude Gillette, was serving as manager of the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

Immediately after the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony, the group enjoyed lunch on the museum grounds. Clyde Combs, WWII Veteran who served on D Day, was kind enough to indulge Jennifer Ellis with a photograph.

The group wishes to thank Rick Lawrence (Member), photographer.

This most recent National Pearl Harbor Day Memorial Service hosted by Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors Indiana Chapter 2 was one for the record books. In attendance were Pearl Harbor Survivor Jim DeWitt (USS Anteres) and child survivor Wendy Minnear Masters. To the best of anyone’s recollection, this was the first time that this memorial service was held indoors since it was started by Pearl Harbor Survivors Assn. Indiana Chapter 2 many years ago. It was also the first time that 93 year old vocalist Evelyn Lisek wasn’t in attendance; she was caring for her daughter who recently had knee surgery.

Northeastern Illinois Remembers Pearl Harbor

GREAT LAKES, IL, UNITED STATES 12.07.2019 Story by John Sheppard • Naval Station Great Lakes Public Affairs

GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Dec. 7, 2019) — Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) Commanding Officer Capt. Ray Leung spoke before a crowd of Pearl Harbor survivors’ descendants, veterans and officials Saturday, Dec. 7, in honor of the 78th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This was the first time the commemoration was held at the National Museum of the American Sailor. Capt. Ray Leung and SDPHS member Bob Miller

This was the eighth commemoration that was organized by brothers Eric “Rick” Miller and Bob Miller of the Sons & Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors (SDPHS), the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Illinois Chapter 1 (PHSA), and Mike Lake, Commander of VFW Post 2992.

“We were very happy with the new venue. I think it is the right size,” said Rick Miller. “All staff involved were professional and courteous. Anything we needed we received. We would like to continue to have the ceremony at the museum.” He thanked all the museum staff for making the ceremony a success. Two uniforms donated to us by a USS VESTAL survivor. “I hope everyone takes a few minutes out of their day to thank Rick and Bob for all their hard work,” Leung said, addressing the crowd of about 100 people.

Their late father, Clarence “C.J.” Miller, was aboard the USS Ramsay when the attack occurred. Rick and Bob Miller have spent the last 19 years honoring their father, the local survivors, the survivors that have passed away and all those who lost their lives on December 7, 1941.

Bob Miller was the master of ceremonies. A two-bell ceremony honored the local Pearl Harbor survivors who passed away and all who perished on First half of our Pearl Harbor display. December 7, 1941. Navy Band Great Lakes provided the ceremonial music.

“Somberness and remembrance are hallmarks of honoring those whose lives were lost or damaged as they fought for America,” said Leung during his remarks. “But there is another way of remembering them—by being ready. It’s now our watch and readiness is the best remembrance we can give the veterans who have gone before us.”

A Pearl Harbor display area was open after the ceremony. This display has been put together over the last 28 years and is the private collection of the Miller family. SDPHS California Chapter 5 Story by Kathleen Farley

Each year, SDPHS CA Chapter 5 will co-sponsor our Dec 7th Memorial Beacon Lighting to honor our Pearl Harbor Survivors. This event has taken place each year since 1964 when ADMR. Chester Nimitz came out to turn the beacon light atop of Mount Diablo back on. This beacon light was placed on top of the mountain by Standard Oil in 1928 and it’s primary use was for navigational purposes. December 8, 1941 the light was ordered to be turned off and stayed off until Dec 7, 1964. SDPHS CA Chapter 5 along with Save Mount Diablo each year will hold a memorial to honor all 2403 that perished on Dec 7, 1941 at Pearl. In the past, we have had as many as a thousand people attend. This year due to cold and rain, around 300 showed. SDPHS Chapter 5 is honored to “Keep the Memory Alive”.

13 Offspring Issue 1, 2020 Offspring Issue 1, 2020 Always Remember....

Take Time to Remember By Lynn Shindell

December 7, 1941. A day that President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously described as “a date which will live in infamy.”

On that day America lost more than 2,400 service members and civilians also gave way to 51 Navy Cross and 15 recipients, who, in the face of grave and unsuspecting danger, committed acts of heroism that will forever be recognized by our great nation.

It is important today that we not only mourn the deaths and honor those lives lost at Pearl Harbor U.S. Naval base, but that we also have an appropriate appreciation for the scope of lives lost in battle over our nation’s history.

From then, the greatest generation went on to defeat evil during the second World War. Those who survived came home to rebuild what the United States had lost during the span of war, continue serving to protect our freedoms, and pay homage to those lost during it.

And while we honor them with observances and tributes, it is also appropriate that we remember those among us here and throughout the country for whom the loss of each of these men and women is so personally felt – the Gold Star families of all generations to whom each of the fallen was a husband or wife, mother or father, sister or brother, daughter or son.

Our nation owes a debt to its fallen heroes that we can never fully repay. It is our responsibility, our duty, and even our privilege to honor their sacrifice. We must honor them in our own lives by keeping them and their memories close to our hearts and allowing their character and selflessness to guide our own sense of patriotism and duty to own fellow Americans.

As a nation, we must honor them by keeping the sacred trust with all the men and women who have served in uniform and are currently serving now, as well as their families; by never giving up the search for those who still haven’t returned home, and by keeping the spirit of this day with us every day, all year around.
