“The Battle for the Enlightenment”: Rushdie, Islam, and the West
i “The Battle for the Enlightenment”: Rushdie, Islam, and the West Adam Glyn Kim Perchard PhD University of York English and Related Literature August 2014 ii iii Abstract In the years following the proclamation of the fatwa against him, Salman Rushdie has come to view the conflict of the Rushdie Affair not only in terms of a struggle between “Islam” and “the West”, but in terms of a “battle for the Enlightenment”. Rushdie’s construction of himself as an Enlightened war-leader in the battle for a divided world has proved difficult for many critics to reconcile with the Rushdie who advocates “mongrelization” as a form of life-giving cultural hybridity. This study suggests that these two Rushdies have been in dialogue since long before the fatwa. It also suggests that eighteenth-century modes of writing and thinking about, and with, the Islamic East are far more integral to the literary worlds of Rushdie’s novels than has previously been realised. This thesis maps patterns of rupture and of convergence between representations of the figures of the Islamic despot and the Muslim woman in Shame, The Satanic Verses, and Haroun and the Sea of Stories, and the changing ways in which these figures were instrumentalised in eighteenth-century European literatures. Arguing that many of the harmful binaries that mark the way Rushdie and others think about Islam and the West hardened in the late eighteenth century, this study folds into the fable of the fatwa an account of European literary engagements with the Islamic world in the earlier part of the eighteenth century. -

Voltaire Et L'opéra
01 I 2016 Archiv für Textmusikforschung Voltaire et l’opéra : ses livrets, adaptations opératiques de ses tragédies Albert GIER (Bamberg) Summary Voltaire wrote seven librettos, but only two minor texts were set to music by Rameau. – His tragedies do not have tragic heroes (in the Aristotelian sense), they present paragons of virtue and vice. In some of his tragédies larmoyantes (Ridgway), the villains triumph at the end (cf. Mahomet); in others, virtue is rewarded and evil punished (cf. Sémiramis). Therefore, Voltaire’s tragedies anticipate some features of the romantic melodrama. This may be the reason why they inspired librettists and composers of (Italian and French) opera mainly in the decades between 1780 and 1810 when French melodrama was created by Guilbert de Pixérécourt and others. – As examples for the technique of adaptation, the librettos of Tancredi (Rossini), Maometto (von Winter), and Semiramide (Rossini) are analysed in greater detail. -
Rameau, Jean-Philippe
Rameau, Jean-Philippe (b Dijon, bap. 25 Sept 1683; d Paris, 12 Sept 1764). French composer and theorist. He was one of the greatest figures in French musical history, a theorist of European stature and France's leading 18th-century composer. He made important contributions to the cantata, the motet and, more especially, keyboard music, and many of his dramatic compositions stand alongside those of Lully and Gluck as the pinnacles of pre-Revolutionary French opera. 1. His father Jean, a local organist, was apparently the first professional musician in a family that was to include several notable keyboard players: Jean-Philippe himself, his younger brother Claude and sister Catherine, Claude's son Jean-François (the eccentric ‘neveu de Rameau’ of Diderot's novel) and Jean-François's half-brother Lazare. Jean Rameau, the founder of this dynasty, held various organ appointments in Dijon, several of them concurrently; these included the collegiate church of St Etienne (1662–89), the abbey of StSt Bénigne (1662–82), Notre Dame (1690–1709) and St Michel (1704–14). Jean-Philippe's mother, Claudine Demartinécourt, was a notary's daughter from the nearby village of Gémeaux. Al- though she was a member of the lesser nobility, her family, like that of her husband, included many in humble occupations. -
