I was convinced that my personal experiences in Tunisia as a diplomat from 2012-2016 would write themselves. However the journey has been long, and along the way I have learnt that the academic world is filled with theories which very rarely actually correspond to the real world experiences of people who are on the ground and living experiences which cannot be theorised and which do not consider whether there is a gap in research or not, what the research question may be or how they are going to reference the work of others. The theories of political Islam and liberal democracy are used as the theoretical framework for the study. A qualitative approach was undertaken with a focused textual analysis of a variety of academic papers and opinion pieces on the theory of political Islam in order to discuss the compatibility of political Islam and democracy. The study makes use of Tunisia and the Ennahdha Movement as a case study to assess the practical application of political Islam. The research is limited to the 2011-2015 period in Tunisia in order to specifically make use of the electoral periods to determine the political Islam credentials of the Ennahdha Movement. What the study has determined is that there is sufficient evidence of the symbiotic relationship between political Islam and liberal democracy, making political Islam a viable approach for political movements in Muslim majority countries. This study contributes to the literature on political Islam as well as analysis of the post-Arab Spring developments in Tunisia. It provides a more in-depth focus on what makes Ennahdha a political Islam movement and uncovers its liberal democratic character. Keywords: Political Islam, liberal democracy, Ennahdha Movement, Tunisia, Arab Spring, elections, Rached Ghannouchi vi CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION 1.1 General Introduction Political Islam, broadly defined by (Fuller, 2002, p. 48) as, "the belief that the Koran and the Hadith have something important to say about the way society and governance are organised", emerged as the viable political path following years of authoritarianism in the countries of the Arab Spring in 2011. As a political theory, political Islam developed over several centuries through the political experiences of Islamist leaders starting with the Prophet Muhammed and his successors. According to Campbell (2008, p. 436) the Prophet Muhammed did not view politics as a part of the divine, but rather as a human creation built through deliberation and utility.     Kyoto University Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 39, No. 4, March 2002 Modeling the State: Postcolonial Constitutions in Asia and Africa* Julian GO** Abstract This essay examines the independence constitutions of Asia and Africa in the twentieth cen- tury through a macro-comparative lens. The examination focuses upon the intra-imperial isomorphic thesis which proposes that newly independent countries, in formulating their constitutions, merely imitated the constitutional form of their former mother country. I find that while independent constitutions indeed imitated the constitutions of their former moth- er country, this mimicry was neither universal nor whole scale. It occurred foremost in terms of the constitutional provisions for governmental system. Conversely, at least half of the independence constitutions in Asia and Africa had provisions for religion, rights, and/or political parties that ran counter to the constitutional model of the former mother country. These countervailing tendencies to the logic of intra-imperial isomorphism reveal crucial trans-imperial influences on the making of modern postcolonial constitutions. Introduction The decolonization of Asia and Africa since WWII appears at once as a novel and yet banal historical process. On the one hand, it was an intensified moment of state-building and frenzied constitutional activity. As the Western empires crumbled, they left behind a mul- titude of nascent states each seeking to institute a new constitutional order. The number of these new states, and especially its impact upon the configuration of the global political map, is staggering. In 1910 there were 56 independent countries in the world. By 1970, after the first major wave of decolonization, the number had increased to 142.

This topic has generated controversy about its impact on Muslims societies and international affairs more broadly, including how governments should respond to this socio- political phenomenon. This article has modest aims. It seeks to reflect on the broad theme of political Islam four decades after it first captured global headlines by critically examining two separate but interrelated controversies. The first theme is political Islam’s acquisition of state power. Various elements and factors continue to define the limitations and opportunities present for regimes and governments to pursue hostile or negative policies concerning their immediate neighbours. The period between 1969 and 2010 provides a rich area for the exploration of inter-state relations between Libya and Tunisia during the 20th century and in the first decade of the 21st century. Ideologies such as Arabism, socialism, Third Worldism, liberalism and nationalism, dominated the Cold War era, which saw two opposing camps: the capitalist West versus the communist East.
