# OTHER (PLEASE SPECIFY) DATE 1 Greatest need 3/4/2019 8:26 AM

2 Improvements where they are most needed 3/4/2019 8:20 AM 3 Improvements should be made in parks that are most heavily used in growing areas of the city 3/3/2019 11:19 PM

4 My neighbors and I have grave concerns about previous “improvements” that were completed in 3/3/2019 9:54 PM utter disregard for how they would affect nearby homeowners. Therefore, I’m against any further improvements.

5 Make improvements to significant parks where budget has the most impact 3/3/2019 9:52 PM 6 Improvements should focus on retaining the vision that the Olmsted Brothers gave us in perpetuity 3/3/2019 9:26 PM

7 Please focus on the south end. Investments always seems to be disproportionate and south 3/3/2019 8:56 PM seattle always seems to be the last priority. 8 where improvements are most needed 3/3/2019 8:42 PM

9 The most used parks should be rated higher. 3/3/2019 8:09 PM

11 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

10 It’s complex. How about prioritizing true projects at each park and working on top priority projects 3/3/2019 7:02 PM for each park.

11 where there is community involvement 3/3/2019 6:56 PM

12 These values are for all of the parks and not one is better than anot. Parks are a valuable personal 3/3/2019 6:54 PM space and growth for all of us and not be considered exchanged for resale of real estate . As the size of population increases, parks are an important piece in every city in the Wirld!

13 It is very important to me that park improvements are equitable across the city and not just focused 3/3/2019 6:50 PM on communities with active and more weathly adjacent neighborhoods

14 improvements to return to original plan 3/3/2019 5:17 PM 15 Improvements should be distributed equally and fundraising could occur for the system as a whole 3/3/2019 2:25 PM

16 Improvements should be made where needed due to disrepair or dysfunction; and then equitably 3/3/2019 1:57 PM distributed across the City 17 all of the above 3/2/2019 8:11 AM

18 Improvements should enhance the original vision of the Olmsted Bros. 3/1/2019 5:41 PM

19 Colman Park is in need of improvements 3/1/2019 5:23 PM 20 Focus on parks / boulevards that are most historically significant and offer the best opportunity to 3/1/2019 12:56 PM enhance their integrity

21 Improvements should be made in parks where the surrounding community has had less 3/1/2019 10:51 AM investment and has greater need of a robust, welcoming park. Equity should inform prioritization. 22 Improvements should be made in areas with good access (like volunteer park) not areas like 3/1/2019 12:35 AM Magnolia where there are fewer people who may enjoy the space.

23 Screw "equal distribution" throughout the city. Volunteer park is accessible to thousands of more 2/28/2019 4:10 PM people than something like Magnolia BVLD. Think about access - why would we prioritize a park surrounded by SFHs rather than apartments/institutions. 24 Improvements should be made in parks adjacent to mixed-use zoning and public transit hubs. 2/28/2019 3:15 PM

25 neighborhood/racial equity needs to be considered. Also If there is an opportunity to really polish 2/28/2019 2:45 PM up a park, that is an important consideration. Volunteer Park is a heavily used park in a very dense neighborhood and is one of our crown jewels so I support it as being further renovated. 26 Improvements should optimize pedestrian access, landscape, ecosystem, environment, changes 2/28/2019 2:07 PM to sunlight, reducing noise pollution and other factors that have evolved since the parks were first designed by the Olmsteds. 27 Improvements should be made to parks closest to the largest number of residents 2/28/2019 1:30 PM

28 Improvements should be made in parks that are more accessible to the lower class, as well as 2/28/2019 1:29 PM parks that incentivize community fundraising. 29 Improvements should be made in neighborhoods with less access to open space and historically 2/28/2019 1:27 PM denied access to the neighborhoods that have the existing boulevards 30 Improvements should be made where the Olmstead vision has been lost but can be restored. 2/28/2019 1:17 PM

31 Volunteer Park 2/28/2019 1:02 PM 32 Improvements should be made in parks where the greatest number of people are likely to benefit 2/27/2019 11:28 PM from them.

33 Washington Park Arboretum 2/27/2019 6:44 PM 34 by popularity of park use 2/27/2019 2:48 PM 35 Improvements should be made where they will best improve access for underserved parts of the 2/27/2019 2:19 PM city. 36 I think having more than one proposal in different parts of the city is good, but not necessarily 2/27/2019 1:21 PM distributing efforts equally. Keeping the integrity of the improvements is important, and having enough funding to make coherent changes is important. 37 Community involvement 2/26/2019 10:47 PM

12 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

38 Colman Park has been neglected for 30 years 2/26/2019 7:29 PM

39 Focus on lasting improvements to heavily visited park areas 2/26/2019 5:03 PM 40 Multiple criteria: Opportunities to leverage community fundraising, spread thru city, and apply 2/26/2019 3:52 PM where the greatest number of people can use and enjoy.

41 improvements should be made where they will most benefit community enjoyment of the park 2/26/2019 3:45 PM 42 The upper slope of Colman Park was neglected more many years. The scenic vista which includes 2/26/2019 3:28 PM the Cascades, Mercer Island, Mt. Rainier and Lake Washington was a key part of the Olmsted vision for this park and a crucial element of enticing and welcoming the public into Colman Park. 43 Improvements should be made in most heavily used parks 2/26/2019 3:23 PM 44 Assuming funding is limited, the facilities dept is better able to prioritize needs. 2/26/2019 2:44 PM

45 Improvements should be made where they are most needed 2/26/2019 11:23 AM 46 Improvements should be based on the original Olmsted design, community involvement and 2/26/2019 11:08 AM wishes. 47 Improvements should be made in parks where there have been continued community interest and 2/25/2019 11:58 PM efforts to promote renovations

48 Improvements should be made in the parks that are in the greatest need of improvement 2/25/2019 9:30 PM 49 Improvements should be made in parks that do not get as much non-P&R funding and volunteer 2/25/2019 7:22 PM support

50 Improvements should be made in the parks with the greatest overall historical neglect 2/25/2019 5:52 PM 51 Prioritize parks with high vegetation loss or low tree canopy cover. 2/25/2019 5:30 PM 52 Improvements where most needed and with the greatest results for better public experience. 2/25/2019 3:21 PM

53 Improvements should be made in parks where there is enough funding to make transformative 2/25/2019 2:56 PM investment. This might not be all the recommended improvements but it should be enough to make a tangible difference to visitors. Please don't spread improvements too thinly in an effort to give "something" to everyone. 54 Parks that have been neglected by the Parks Dept. for years should get the most attention. Parks 2/25/2019 1:22 PM in areas where citizens, primarily minorities, felt ignored by the City and Parks should get priority treatment. Parks where community members have strongly advocated for restoration to align with the Olmsted vision should receive focus and attention. 55 Improvements should be made in parks where there is high neighborhood interest in specific 2/25/2019 12:30 PM outcomes.

56 Improvements should be made in Parks that have been historically neglected. 2/25/2019 11:12 AM 57 Focus should be on those places where renovations will have the most impact either in 2/25/2019 10:59 AM preservation or enjoyment of use

58 Improvements should be made to parks that have been neglected the longest. Parks has allowed 2/25/2019 10:49 AM Colman Park to deteriorate to a shocking extent, particularly the upper slope.

59 Improvements should be made in parks where community is diverse and most in need of 2/25/2019 10:28 AM renovation for the purpose of activation 60 improvments should be mindful of distribuion, yet congregated in a way that allwos them to have a 2/25/2019 10:26 AM substantive impact, where thay can be seen and enjoyed, and where investment is critical to stop further degredation.

61 improvements should be made to make parks more accessible for walking and people with 2/25/2019 8:29 AM disabilities 62 In low income neighborhoods please. Are there any Olmstead Parks on the of Rainier 2/24/2019 10:49 PM avenue and south of Gennessee 63 Improvements should be limited to only the number of parks that you have funding to fully 2/24/2019 10:37 PM complete and not need to cut corners 64 preserve legacy 2/24/2019 7:37 PM

13 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

65 Improvements should be made where they are most necessary and will make the most impact on 2/24/2019 7:12 PM visitors. 66 Improvements should be made in parks that are closest to communities that have been 2/24/2019 6:41 PM underserved in terms of equitable access to green space 67 N/A 2/24/2019 6:04 PM

68 Improvements should be made to Colman Park which over the last 20 - 50 years has been 2/24/2019 3:36 PM chronically neglected. The restoration of the Olmsted designed scenic vista and entry is broadly recognized as one of the most important and overdue improvements to restore this legacy park.

69 Prioritize underdeveloped (LkWnBdbetweenCharles&Norman 2/24/2019 2:50 PM 70 The City needs parks that provide water access for dogs. Visit Mercer Island for a good example. 2/24/2019 9:02 AM The postage-stamp off-leash areas are inadequate. There could easily be a large dog park along the blvd approaching Seward Park or at Stan Sayres. There are more dogs than kids in Seattle and dog owners pay taxes too

71 Fix Queen Anne Boulevard-city has put blacktop where concrete rolled edge should be fixed, also 2/23/2019 9:19 PM the street trees are in need of replanting, the parks department has not enforced what people are doing to the parking strip. It needs love! 72 Improvements should be made only if they honor the originsl design intentions of Olmstead, and in 2/23/2019 9:07 PM the parks with the most long-overdue needs.

73 Improvements should be made in parks that are needed the most of parks that are used the most 2/23/2019 8:58 PM to complete all of the proposed improvements 74 Improvements should be made in parks where the community has indicated a willingness to 2/23/2019 8:02 PM participate in maintenance 75 Improvements should be made in heavily used parks and parks where improvements are most 2/23/2019 5:59 PM needed. 76 Green, non pavement, improvements should be made in the most urban parks, not the hard to get 2/23/2019 5:40 PM to, wealthy neighborhoods, single-family zoned park.

77 Possibly by higher use? 2/23/2019 4:47 PM 78 Combination of equally distributing and opportunity for fundraising 2/23/2019 4:38 PM 79 Most popular parks 2/23/2019 4:29 PM

80 Environmental risk level 2/23/2019 3:20 PM 81 equitable as to geographic areas, such as north and south Seattle 2/23/2019 1:42 PM 82 Natural open spaces are most under threat and need to be protected fully. 2/23/2019 1:23 PM

83 The parks surrounded by fancy neighborhoods should get less funding, as they are generally less 2/23/2019 11:46 AM accessible to the general public. 84 S 2/23/2019 9:07 AM

85 Improvements should feature access to unique viewpoints--e.g., Ursula Judkins Viewpoint Park 2/23/2019 8:45 AM overlooking QA, the city, Elliott Bay, Cruise Ships, Marina, Mt. Rainier, etc.

86 1st meet some min. threshold of maintenance, 2nd by use 2/23/2019 8:06 AM 87 not sure what youmean by "improvements" 2/22/2019 11:55 PM 88 Annex Fort Lawton to Discovery Park 2/22/2019 11:37 PM 89 I think improvements are sometimes not always the necessary, and changes to the parks should 2/22/2019 11:06 PM be considered carefully. 90 Improvements should be made in parks that are the most used or where they are functionally most 2/22/2019 11:00 PM needed. 91 Improvements should start with those most impacted by the city’s pending upzones and expanded 2/22/2019 9:42 PM urban villages, moving onto the others after those are completed.

92 Please do Maintenance, not improvements. Do not alter or add to or modify the original Olmsted 2/22/2019 9:12 PM designs.

14 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

93 Improvements should stress environmental factors. 2/22/2019 8:26 PM

94 Improvements w City funds AND findraising 2/22/2019 8:22 PM 95 Where the need for repair/revitalization is the greatest 2/22/2019 7:43 PM 96 Improvements should first be made in the parks that are used the most 2/22/2019 7:15 PM 97 Improvements should be equally distributed throughout the city if possible, and allow opportunities 2/22/2019 6:30 PM for community involvement by assistance with fundraising as well as physically. 98 The ones outside of wealthy communities first 2/22/2019 6:24 PM

99 Where there is the most use by residents regardless of income level 2/22/2019 6:22 PM 100 Improvements should be made in order of greatest need, and in keeping with the Olmsted's vision. 2/22/2019 6:07 PM If two parks have equal need, ones in low income neighborhoods should be given priority

101 We should improve equally throughout the city AND allow communities to fundraise towards being 2/22/2019 5:48 PM able to complete the projects. 102 ....and opportunity for community fundraising 2/22/2019 5:29 PM

103 Improvements should be made to most visited parks, of which The Arboretum is near or at the top 2/22/2019 5:13 PM of the list. 104 Should be based on use (parks that have most visitors), equitable locations, and need for updates. 2/22/2019 4:52 PM

105 Where there is large scale community support. 2/22/2019 4:52 PM 106 Improvements should center on historically undeserved communities as well as increasing 2/22/2019 4:40 PM accessibility (safe routes to access and pass through for purple 107 Improvements should be made wherever it is dangerous to walk/cross boulevards and park edges 2/22/2019 4:24 PM that were designed before the dominance of constant, modern, high speed SOVs

108 ...to the heaviest use parks. 2/22/2019 4:08 PM 109 Improvement priorities should be based on a combination of factors: where funding can be 2/22/2019 4:01 PM leveraged by grants and fund-raising; locations with greatest visibility and use; where they are most needed; where further deterioration will take place without action. 110 Priority should be given to low income areas/areas with little other tree canopy and park access. 2/22/2019 4:00 PM 111 improvements should be in keeping with Olmsted's vision. 2/22/2019 3:59 PM

112 Improvements should be made where the historical design intent can be kept if at all possible 2/22/2019 3:50 PM 113 See below 2/22/2019 3:39 PM 114 improvements should be made to the parks that need it the most 2/22/2019 3:37 PM

115 Improvements should be made in parks that get the most use 2/22/2019 3:36 PM 116 Equitable improvements to neighborhoods based on need, please! 2/22/2019 3:32 PM 117 Should be based on highest usage 2/22/2019 3:20 PM

118 Improvements should be made in neighborhoods that have more affordable housing. Queen 2/22/2019 2:30 PM Anne, Magnolia and Montlake(Washington Park) are some of the most expensive areas in the city, lets improve the parks in less affluent areas 119 Improvements should be made where there is the most bang for the buck and where 2/22/2019 2:28 PM improvements will really improve users' experiences.

120 Parks that most need upgrades in safety. 2/22/2019 2:23 PM 121 Focus on long term sustainable projects such as maintaining the original infrastructure and 2/22/2019 2:17 PM arboreal legacy rather than signage and new improvements.

122 Fix any hazards or structural deterioration first 2/22/2019 2:16 PM 123 Should be based upon historical significance. Woodland Park at the top of the list. 2/22/2019 2:07 PM 124 Improvements should be made based on the priorities of health and safety for the site attendees 2/22/2019 2:03 PM and the health and safety for the site flora and fauna.

15 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

125 Community fundraising should be involved in all the parks 2/22/2019 1:45 PM 126 parks that serve many people, not an isolated, wealthy pocket communiity 2/22/2019 1:42 PM 127 Where there are safety concerns such as potholes and uneven surface bad for bikes strollers 2/22/2019 1:39 PM runners walkers such as Interlaken Park 128 Hiawatha 2/22/2019 1:38 PM 129 Impovements should go to areas with lower property value first to prioritize equity 2/22/2019 1:28 PM

130 Renovations should focus on the most architecturally significant Olmstead parks, in need of 2/22/2019 1:27 PM preservation. 131 Greatest estimated increase of use due to improvements. 2/22/2019 1:03 PM

132 Improvements made (if needed) where people traffic is highest 2/22/2019 1:01 PM 133 It's time to retree Queen Anne and Bigelow Street 2/22/2019 12:55 PM 134 Improvements should be made in parks where the need is greatest 2/22/2019 12:53 PM

135 Improvements should be made to parks in the south end since it gets overlooked so often. 2/22/2019 12:44 PM 136 complicated question, need to see the list of sites and criteria 2/22/2019 12:43 PM 137 Where there would be the greatest utilization..visits 2/22/2019 12:43 PM

138 We need 2 archery ranges. A walkthrough and a flat range 2/22/2019 12:40 PM 139 Park improvements should be made in undeserved neighborhoods 2/22/2019 12:36 PM 140 Don’t know 2/22/2019 12:34 PM

141 Improvements should be made where they can be maintained. Current city policies are allowing 2/22/2019 12:31 PM our parks and public spaces to be destroyed by vandals and vagrants. What’s the point in spending money out is going to be ruined? 142 Improvements should be made at least partially most important to each park. Community 2/22/2019 12:30 PM fundraising and corporate funding can also be used to complete necessary improvements and beautifications 143 Seattle passed a levy for parks. Ease use it. 2/22/2019 12:29 PM 144 Parks and public spaces should be in communities where development and density are high - not 2/22/2019 12:28 PM wealthier single family neighborhoods. 145 Don’t bother with Woodland Park. Sadly it now belongs to homeless addicts. 2/22/2019 12:28 PM 146 Less structures and more natural space. 2/22/2019 12:24 PM

147 Improvements should be evaluated and prioritized in those parks where need is most critical. 2/22/2019 12:20 PM 148 Improvements should be a priority in parks with heavy use 2/22/2019 12:17 PM 149 'Improvements' is too general a request. I don't see that any have ever been made. I see signage, 2/22/2019 12:15 PM that's about it. And I live on a 'park'. 150 Prioritize by where most needed 2/22/2019 12:11 PM

151 Work on the parks that need improvement! Duh! 2/22/2019 11:24 AM 152 Improvements should be made in parks with the greatest visitation, so that the most people can 2/22/2019 10:11 AM benefit.

153 I like a combination of the last 2 choices, need adequate funding ot completes improvements but 2/21/2019 10:22 PM inlcude community fundraising and input 154 Improvements should be made in parks that have the fewest public green spaces 2/21/2019 9:58 PM

155 Improvements in parks that have the greatest need (e.g., basic function improvements, fewer 2/21/2019 8:12 PM alternative parks nearby, minimum threshold of use [i.e., how many folks benefit?]) 156 Renovations should happen the parts of the city that have the least access to other parks and 2/21/2019 4:58 PM recreation opportunities

16 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

157 I'd suggest balancing criteria: parks with the most need, improvements that would most benefit 2/21/2019 2:19 PM most people, distributing improvements to affect more neighborhoods 158 Improvements should be made in parks that have the largest audience/most mixed use. This way, 2/21/2019 1:33 PM improvements can have the largest impact and appreciation

159 Which communities have shown greatest interest in restoring and maintaining their park 2/21/2019 11:56 AM 160 Improvements should be made on optimizing: (1) number of people estimated to benefit (2) cost to 2/21/2019 11:01 AM renovate. Making the dollar go furthest for the greatest amount of people possible.

161 where there is the greatest need and opportunity 2/21/2019 10:54 AM 162 improvements should be made in parks with lower levels of present functionality (ie colman park 2/21/2019 9:49 AM over volunteer park) 163 invest in enhanced maintenance prior to capital projects 2/21/2019 8:56 AM 164 Improvements should be made in parks most utilized by families 2/21/2019 8:01 AM

165 Restore the most critical areas first, then prioritize work using a combination of equally distributed 2/21/2019 4:05 AM upgrades to parks in need 166 Keep to Olmsted original intent as close as possible. 2/21/2019 12:01 AM

167 All! 2/20/2019 11:04 PM 168 improvements to the areas of parks that are experiencing the worse decay, causing safety 2/20/2019 8:13 PM hazards. Community involvement is a great goal but it shouldn't dictate whether a park is funded or not. 169 All of the above. Prioritize the threat of irretrievable loss and severely deferred maintenance. 2/20/2019 1:04 PM 170 Hiawatha 2/20/2019 12:43 PM

171 Sites which restoration of the original design, in a significant area, is more feasible/fundable. But 2/20/2019 11:13 AM also interpretation opportunities are present, AND evenly (equally is probably not possible) distributed throughout the city 172 Improvements should be prioritized to reduce the permanent degradation of the Olmstead master 2/20/2019 9:02 AM plan. We can upgrade later, but if we lose vital parts of the scheme, we will never recover them.

173 Do parks whose LOCAL useage is expected to increase most AND the parks used most currently. 2/20/2019 7:33 AM 174 Improvements should be made to largest parks first 2/19/2019 11:23 PM 175 We should get the biggest bang for our buck - community fundraising is a good idea. Community 2/19/2019 5:38 PM input should be allowed from Seattle Citizens whose tax dollars pay for the improvements. 176 Improvements should be distributed based on which parks are used the most 2/19/2019 4:32 PM 177 improvements should prioritize serving communities of color 2/19/2019 3:34 PM

178 Should be made to parks with highest amount use by community 2/19/2019 3:31 PM 179 Improvements should be made where most needed. 2/19/2019 3:04 PM 180 Improvements should be made where they will have the most impact on the community around it. 2/19/2019 1:12 PM Projects need to be completed so funding has to be monitored carefully. 181 Improvements should be made where historic character or features are in greatest danger of 2/19/2019 12:39 PM being lost or where repair is most urgent.

# RESPONSES DATE 1 This is a rich heritage and we need to preserve all the parks. As humans we need open spaces to 3/4/2019 10:10 AM be healthy, With all the high density construction in our city, it is more important than ever to preserve and restore what little open spaces we have left! 2 Please restore Colman Park to the Olmsted vision 3/4/2019 9:41 AM 3 Notice of survey closing 3/1 and notice to take survey 2/25 are uncomfortably close, no? 3/4/2019 9:36 AM

4 I am concerned that sometimes in our city south end projects received less attention because 3/4/2019 9:24 AM residents may either lack knowledge or have fewer resources to devote to advocating for the attention our Olmsted parks need. 5 Colman Park is in need of attention and has a community that is committed to honoring its Olmsted 3/4/2019 8:57 AM legacy after many years of witnessing its neglect. Everyone knows that what has been allowed to happen at Colman Park since the late 60s at this site would never have been allowed to happen in whiter, more affluent areas of the city. By restoring the vegetation and vista on the upper slope of 31st Ave S to that which John Charles Olmsted intended, Colman will again be recognizable as a public park from one of its most significant entrances. Many in the community are excited that the Olmsted legacy for Colman is finally being restored and the vista that invites people into the park is a good first step! 6 I would hope that the same attention is being made to all Olmsted parks throughout the city 3/4/2019 8:49 AM equally. 7 PLEASE be sure these parks are protected and preserved! They are a precious commodity in our 3/3/2019 11:17 PM City and it is our obligation to see to it that they are cared for and passed on to the next generation in excellent shape. 8 I wasn't aware that all of the parks listed were Olmstead parks. I've visited all of them during my 23 3/3/2019 11:13 PM years in Seattle. Schmitz Park seems hidden, kind of under-used and not well-groomed but specular for the huge old trees. It needs a bathroom! There's one portion that's hidden which people use (homeless) like a toilet and it smells unbelievable foul sometimes in the summer passing that spot on the trail. Would love to see more info posted about the Olmstead vision and style so people know the history.

9 With the homeless crisis in our area, I am disappointed that any monies would be spent on 3/3/2019 9:54 PM “improving”/“renovating” areas that are beautiful just as they are.

10 We have a jewel in the Olmsted legacy that other cities only wish they could possess. Protect it - 3/3/2019 9:26 PM don't let it slip from our grasp 11 Mt Baker Park/Colman Park would be nice additions to the recent nat'l Historic neighborhood 3/3/2019 9:16 PM designation. Mt Baker Community Club would be a good neighborhool tool to promeote the projects.

12 I am absolutely opposed to making improvements based on a neighborhood's ability to fundraise. 3/3/2019 9:14 PM 13 These parks are part of the legacy of the founders and continue the priority in Seattle of parks, 3/3/2019 8:14 PM greenspace, vistas, and the respite and larger-world concept they provide, even if it is for a moment during a citizen's day. Seattle Parks Department-please do all you can to maintain and even improve these spaces, and all green spaces throughout Seattle. The increasing density of our city demands even more places of rest for the mind and respite for the busy-ness and pace of our modern days. 14 Olmsted's goal was to provide recreational space to all during the indudtrial and population booms. 3/3/2019 8:09 PM This is relevant again nowvs. As we grow a nd become more dense. Park land can calm people. 15 let's spread the word of the history and essence of Seattle's Olmsted legacy so that new comers 3/3/2019 8:04 PM are familiar and supportive 16 All our natural parks are important and fundamental to the culture of Seattle. 3/3/2019 7:25 PM

17 Colman Park is in the middle of vast improvement. Please continue supporting the community. 3/3/2019 6:56 PM Please train the SPD staff as they have no knowledge of history or native plants. Please stop mowing down our native restoration sites. PLEASE RESTORE LAKE WASHINGTON BLVD! it is 100 feet wide and has been completely encroached by adjacent neighbors. DISGUSTING...instead of being proud to live on an Olmsted Blvd...they STEAL dirt from us all. Please SPD...do your job and protect our parks!

18 This is a conversation that needs to be addressed in the paper, community halls and not just on 3/3/2019 6:54 PM the web. All people need to be part of the decision.

19 It is somewhat ironic that we are looking at improving parks (especially the Olmstead Parks that 3/3/2019 6:50 PM are so important in south-central Seattle, but these are also adjacent to some of the parks proposed for homeless parking and currently have significant homeless encampments. To do park improvements, these parks really need to remain safe and open to all. 20 Some kind of use limitation needs to be imposed on park areas. Seward has events through 3/3/2019 6:21 PM spring, summer and fall and is showing signs of wear. Cleanup after events inspected by park employees for thoroughness should be part of any use agreement. 21 I have an plat map of the "Uplands" a neighborhood in Seward park designed by the Olmstead 3/3/2019 6:20 PM Brothers. 22 I feel that our parks are a blessing and should be cared for. We should NOT have to spend our 3/3/2019 6:18 PM resources on cleaning up after illegal campers. They should be MADE to clean up after themselves! and vacate. If they refuse shelter, they need to move out, of the area. Children and their parents should NOT have to fear for their safety! This is also an embarrassment to what was once such a beautiful city. 68 yr old Seattle native. 23 It is important to stay within the original plans and designs. 3/3/2019 6:18 PM

24 I think and have thought for the last 30 years, the Olmstead legacy should be true. In my 3/3/2019 5:17 PM neighboring park the original design and purpose has not been kept which is so sad since we pretend like we have appreciated what they did for Seattle.

25 I love this legacy in Seattle. It is worth preserving and holding as an example for future urban 3/3/2019 5:12 PM villages

26 I believe improvements along the boulevards which link the parks and Seattle neighborhoods 3/3/2019 4:42 PM should be considered important, as these streets collectively beautify and unify the city. 27 NO camping in any public parks. We will no longer support any levies for parks, as long as the city 3/3/2019 4:40 PM mayor and Council continues on its asinine policies of allowing our parks to be degraded by homeless encampments.

28 Parking should be provided 3/3/2019 4:26 PM 29 what a great asset for Seattle! 3/3/2019 4:12 PM 30 It is important to me that preservation of the Olmsted Parks is not seen as being in conflict with 3/3/2019 3:21 PM smart land use through increased density. Frederick Law Olmsted's greatest legacy is Central Park in New York City, one of the densest cities on Earth. Seattle can incorporate the work of his sons into our future while still continuing to add necessary housing.

31 Parks should never be considered as places for car camping, RV camping, tent camping or any 3/3/2019 2:44 PM purpose other than safe park use.

32 I suggest fixing up Coleman park - specifically improving the walking trail. There is not a smooth 3/3/2019 2:32 PM safe way to take a stroller down to the lake through the park. A sloped path without stairs would be best.

33 Thank you for working to retain and enhance this critical network of Olmsted influenced parks and 3/3/2019 1:57 PM boulevards

34 Please don't permit modern structures in the Olmsted parks. Respect the historical nature (such 3/3/2019 12:28 AM as the proposed amphitheater in volunteer park: there is no incorporation of the original Olmsted theater) which is a huge missed opportunity

21 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

35 I think some parks are just not used that much, like Schmitz Park. That was always my impression 3/2/2019 10:42 AM when I lived near there. I would walk through it, but it felt creepy with all the brush and narrow trails. I stopped going because of that. Also because of the homeless encampments and drug problems. I feel there are safety issues now, so I don't go to parks as I once did. That is too bad because I love our parks. I just don't feel safe sometimes. I wish we had enough money to keep all the parks improved and inviting and beautiful. 36 partnerships with community groups such as Girl Scouts would be a good use of community 3/1/2019 9:13 PM resources. 37 I have limited knowledge of Olmstead parks dating back to 1992 UW Landscape Architecture class 3/1/2019 7:02 PM (a single class I took). These parks are a specia gift we get to enjoy as citizens and should be cared for and invested in!! 38 This is a critical issue for Seattle: preservation of our history, especially given the limited 3/1/2019 5:41 PM greenspace in the city under pressure of more development 39 Colman Park has had lots of community support but still requires maintenance and restoration. 3/1/2019 5:23 PM The scenic vista including views of Lake Washington and Mt Rainier was a key part of the vision to welcome visitors into upper Colman Park and restoration of the upper slope should continue. There are many evergreen trees in Colman Park that have died and should be pruned of removed.

40 More signage about the Olmsted legacy in the parks would be welcome. 3/1/2019 4:18 PM 41 QA Blvd is only tenuously an Olmsted landscape and should not be prioritized. Arboretum project 3/1/2019 12:56 PM focuses on an area of secondary importance compared to key features needing attention (like Rhodo Glen and Woodland ravines with water management problems). 42 The Coleman Park is an important Olmstead park that should be maintained and brought up to it's 3/1/2019 12:52 PM full potential. 43 It's hard to know how to prioritize improvements without knowing what improvements are 3/1/2019 10:51 AM proposed. Are they substantive? Who will benefit - kids? families? older people? people who bike? people who drive? Will they enable more programming and activation? Generally, I think we should first maintain what we have and then add improvements that benefit underserved members of the community and enhance the quality of life for park visitors -- and make the parks more accessible. 44 nice parks 3/1/2019 10:48 AM

45 Look at this tweet. https://twitter.com/sea_Baugruppe/status/1101375485097861120 It would be 3/1/2019 12:35 AM real neat if Seattle Parks/SDOT would grow a spine and reclaim this public space from property owners who have stolen it, as you wish to improve this space. 46 I think that pathways and accessibility is of one of the utmost priorities. the aloha/11th ave corner of 2/28/2019 5:05 PM Volunteer Park is in dire need of pathway improvements to improve accessibility for people with disabilities or those using strollers or even biking into the park. 47 The Olmsted Brothers were not their father, and their projects don't have the same historical 2/28/2019 4:43 PM significance. A second-degree connection to a great landscape architect is not a good basis for determining which of our parks are currently most deserving of improvements. Let's focus on making Seattle parks more accessible and better meeting the needs of users. 48 I looked at the plan for the park in my neighborhood. If by social path, you mean paths worn down 2/28/2019 4:26 PM by people using the park, wouldn't it be better to improve most of these paths instead of removing them? If people are going to walk that way anyway, it would be better to throw some gravel down and make a nicer path to better control the "off road" walking that harms plants. I recognize there are proper reasons that this would not work for all social paths, but it probably would for the majority. 49 Prioritize places like volunteer park, rather than Magnolia/QA/sort of Ravenna BVLDs based on 2/28/2019 4:10 PM how many people can access it 50 Whichever park is chosen it is important to remember that Seattle is changing and that growth is 2/28/2019 3:37 PM causing out need for park spaces that much more important. Moreso keeping in mind that a park should service more than the immediate vicinity and have the needs of those not fortunate enough to live in a single family home. 51 Would love to continue to see investment in Volunteer Park! In my humble opinion it is the queen 2/28/2019 3:36 PM jewel of all Seattle parks!

52 Please be very thoughtful about whether the design vision created over a century ago is the right 2/28/2019 2:49 PM vision for the future of Seattle's parks. These plans particularly emphasized single family homes vs. making parks accessible to all. Planning and urban design has evolved considerably as well as the role of parks as a community amenity. Please prioritize funding improvements that impact communities without a wealthy local community (as wealthier communities can fund more of their own park improvements through fundraising)

53 How we use the parks today has changed from the Olmsted era. While the original design should 2/28/2019 2:07 PM be preserved, we must also consider what has changed. More buildings, environmental pollution, people, climate--all of these things have changed enough that if the Olmsteds were creating these parks today, they would start with a different set of influencing factors. Improvements should mitigate these changes in a way that preserves the integrity of the original designs. 54 Self-fund the Volunteer Park renovation by putting a beautiful cafe or restaurant into Volunteer 2/28/2019 1:58 PM Park to take advantage of the view. Or follow Australia model with small coffee kiosks in our parks that drive revenue and enhance the park. 55 Thank you for asking. Frequent Volunteer Park patron. 2/28/2019 1:31 PM 56 Please prioritize the work in an equitable fashion, so that it is not just the wealthiest residents that 2/28/2019 1:30 PM benefit. Parks closest to a higher density of residents and parks closest to more low-income residents should take priority.

57 In my mind, Olmstead is associated with racist exclusionary zoning and city amenities. Most of our 2/28/2019 1:27 PM boulevards are placed in neighborhoods that were in the last explicitly exclusionary and today too expensive for most — and are still largely single family homes. We should not prioritize parks funding to exacerbate this inequity when most new housing (and almost all affordable housing) is far from these Olmsted boulevards.

58 Please restore Coleman Park. It is way past due. South Seattle parks never get as much attention 2/28/2019 1:24 PM as those above the Ship Canal. 59 Colman Park has been neglected for over 30 years. What was once a beautiful scenic vista from 2/28/2019 1:17 PM 31st Ave. S., which includes Mt. Rainier and Lake Washington was a key part of the Olmsted vision for this park and a crucial element of enticing and welcoming the public into Colman Park. Restoration of the upper slope to the Olmsted vision has significant community support. The recent work undertaken there by Parks without community input makes it look terrible and will do nothing to return the park to the Olmsted vision.

60 I have been a Seattle resident since 1976. I have been a small business owner (hair salon) in the 2/28/2019 11:48 AM 15th Ave East neighborhood, near Volunteer Park for over 10 years. I'm writing because I feel there are some things that should be addressed in terms how these parks should adapt to the needs of the people who actually use the parks on a regular basis. For 10 years, I visit the park nearly every day with my dog. There is no where for my dog to run *anywhere* on Capitol Hill. (and yes, I am more than aware of the little playground under the freeway at the base of Capitol Hill but that is no where near where most of us live. There are more dogs on Capitol Hill than children (look at the numbers). Take a look at a map of how much area has been dedicated to parks, then try and find a single place we can let our dogs run off leash. There is not a single place *anywhere* on Capitol Hill to let dogs run. Not. One. 5 minutes walking around in this area, would be plenty of time to see just exactly how many dogs live up here. They are everywhere, and there is no where to run. I don't have children. Most of my friends don't have children. We have dogs. We are homeowners that are continually being asked to raise our taxes to support the schools - schools we don't use. I have been ticketed repeatedly (at $135 each time) by the patrol, looking for us "criminals" in the park who responsibly let their dogs run, and clean up after our dogs, without another person in sight (except of course, the patrol who hides in his vehicle, waiting to pounce). Dogs need somewhere to run, responsibly! Where can we enjoy the park with our pets off leash? Where are they supposed to go? Are we to continue having to pay $135 every time we let our dogs run? Whether it's certain hours of the day, or a separate area designated for off leash activities - this MUST be addressed with the amount of space there is in the park. Even Central Park in New York was able to come up with a plan... (designated off leash hours) yet our Volunteer Park can't address this? Thank you for reading, and I'm sorry if this comes across with a frustrated tone - but no one is listening to us. I talk with people almost everyday about this. Other dog owners, even people who just like dogs - most agree. There is so much attention being placed in other aspects, but this issue keeps being overlooked. There is a woman named Ellen Taft who has been a major opponent to creating anything related to dogs, but she is one voice, and certainly in the minority. Lastly, I would also like to thank whoever was able to save the wonderful trees around the Asian Art Museum. I was under the impression that they were slated for removal, but unless I'm mistaken - plans have changed to keep them. Again, thank you for reading. Sincerely, Howie Sennet Seattle Resident 61 please add swimming pools to the parks!! 2/28/2019 11:31 AM

62 Please prioritize fulfilling the olmstead plan if volunteer park. Cal Anderson park needs work too. 2/28/2019 9:41 AM Both need better enforcement of no camping/heroin/defecating in the bushes rules and clean up the rat infestation resulting from garbage left by the drug addicts that trash the park on a daily basis 63 The Washington Park Arboretum could greatly benefit from additional funds, particularly in the 2/27/2019 11:28 PM area of improvements that would facilitate greater community gathering spaces with improved resources (bathrooms, etc.). 64 I think the Arboretum should be the priority, 2/27/2019 6:44 PM 65 Scenic vistas are part of the Olmsted vision and should be restored. A few have been ignored for 2/27/2019 4:56 PM decades, Colman Park in particulare

66 I think the Arboretum provides a wealth of educational experiences as well as open public space 2/27/2019 4:16 PM 67 I support helping to fund the crabapple meadow at the Washington Park Arboretum. 2/27/2019 3:20 PM 68 Frustrated with so called improvements that clearly didn’t take the historic aspect of QA Blvd to 2/27/2019 1:37 PM account 69 important to upgrade parks to meet current needs, while valuing the intent of the Olmstead design 2/27/2019 12:38 PM 70 Very appreciative that the City is requesting citizen input on important subject. 2/27/2019 9:38 AM

71 I believe that the project of this type should be valued in a rapidly growing city to protect the 2/27/2019 9:25 AM remaining historic public land. 72 I noticed on the woodland park plan there will be an attempt to remove social trails. That will not 2/27/2019 8:16 AM work, and they should be incorporated into the new design. 73 The Parks and Recreation Department should consider how many people visit each park per year. 2/26/2019 9:34 PM For example, the Arboretum's level of visitors is skyrocketing. We see that formally by taking count at the Japanese Garden and anecdotally through observation on the Arboretum grounds and by the count of visitors to the Graham Visitors Center. Others parks are experiencing increasing visitorship, too. Good works, Parks Department! Thank you for all you do. And thank you for this survey. Jim Reid

74 I especially value any improvements and restorations to Washington Park Arboretum. Our families 2/26/2019 8:31 PM are neighbors and frequent users of the Arboretum. It is a treasure for Seattle and the jewel of the Olmstead plans. 75 Thanks for all that you do. 2/26/2019 7:31 PM 76 I highly recommend that Colman Park be restored including the vista from the upper slope. This 2/26/2019 7:29 PM restoration has significant community support. 77 These are treasures that require our attention and stewardship. They benefit Seattle Citizens in so 2/26/2019 7:22 PM many ways e.g. physical and emotional health.

78 I think the Arboretum has more visitors than any other of the Olmsted parks, so money spent there 2/26/2019 6:25 PM would benefit the largest community. 79 Cheasty is in danger of damage from Parks mountain bike pilot project- and should be protected 2/26/2019 6:17 PM as part of Olmsted original plan to connect it to Mt Baker 80 There are some parks that are historically valuable and if it is possible they need to receive the 2/26/2019 6:12 PM sufficient funds to maintain. 81 Cheasty is overlooked and should connect to Mt Baker per original plans 2/26/2019 5:53 PM 82 Level of park usage by community should also determine funding 2/26/2019 5:19 PM 83 Strongly recommend improvements at the Arboretum where there is growing public access and 2/26/2019 5:03 PM supporting educational programs to help expand support 84 I would be interested to see work done that creates more usable open spaces in some of the 2/26/2019 4:27 PM larger parks. Doing some work to create a gathering area, or picnic area in some of the parks that are so vast and full of exploration. 85 Renovation of the Woodland Meadow at the Washington Park Arboretum would be a great 2/26/2019 4:14 PM candidate for this project. If it had proper drainage and restoration, it would be an ideal public gathering and event space, to make the park even more of an inviting place for recreation and leisure. 86 I would favor raising community funds to improve specifically the Washington Park Arboretum. I 2/26/2019 4:10 PM am a board member of the Arboretum Foundation, and have seen first hand how the community takes more ownership in it's parks when funds are raised to compliment the City's involvement. Hopefully, community fundraising can help the City stretch it's limited funds further and also prioritize park improvements based on community commitment. 87 The Washington Park Arboretum is a park I know from childhood, and the improvement of the 2/26/2019 4:06 PM Woodland Meadow would be a big step towards creating the kind of space Olmstead envisioned-- accessible, relaxing, useful for many endeavors, etc. The potential for that Meadow to improve user's experience (if renovated) is huge! 88 Please consider addressing anchors within the Seattle Olmsted Parks such as Vol Park and the 2/26/2019 3:52 PM Arboretum, as well as some of the less expensive projects spread throughout the city. 89 Restoration of the upper slope to the Olmsted vision has significant community support as a city 2/26/2019 3:28 PM attraction and safe space for neighboring families and visitors.

90 These parks are an irreplaceable legacy and are part of the definition of a user-friendly, spirit- 2/26/2019 12:48 PM friendly Seattle. They must be maintained for future generations, especially as the city grows more dense. If NYC can maintain its Olmstead legacy against cement development, so can Seattle. 91 I would like to see Colman Park receive significant attention and have its vista restored which 2/26/2019 12:24 PM would make this park accessible to many more people.

92 I'd love it if somewhere easily findable on the internet (the Wikipedia page for Olmstead parks for 2/26/2019 11:23 AM example) there existed an easy to read map with all the Seattle Olmstead Parks highlighted with their names listed. I ended up just typing the map names into Google Maps for park names I didn't recognize. I'd love to see the bike trail along Ravenna integrated in with the greenspace in the middle better. I'd love to know the history better but I think the quality of the park design is more important to me than whether it matches it's historical roots. 93 Don't spend any money unless the plans to do something about the homeless take over of the 2/26/2019 10:54 AM parks 94 I hope to see restoration of the Colman Park upper slope - to the Olmsted design and vision. 2/25/2019 11:58 PM

95 I have really enjoyed teh Olmstead walking oturs inteh summer. I have shared with my friends and 2/25/2019 10:07 PM we enjoy the historical insights into locations that we have walked in/through hundreds od times. you have great volunteers. 96 All Olmsted Parks need to be renovated and kept in great shape so they can be enjoyed by all! 2/25/2019 10:04 PM 97 Each time I revisit Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks website I'm 100% reminded of what a 2/25/2019 7:24 PM treasure our community has with these extraordinary parks. They're truly inspiring and restorative. 98 I've long advocated that Seattle parks, if nourished and well maintained, could become a hallmark 2/25/2019 7:22 PM of the city, a draw for visitors. Currently some parks receive quality maintenance but others, frankly, look and feel neglected. We have the bones to have world class public parks. They just need to be better maintained and cared for. 99 Please restore the beautiful Colman Park Vista. It has become overgrown with trees that have 2/25/2019 6:37 PM destroyed the view of the lake and mountains that everyone passing by enjoyed. 100 I would like to see Colmon Park restored to its original Olmstead vision, particularly the north 2/25/2019 6:21 PM slope. 101 the Olmsted parks are a rare treasure, that many other cities would love to have; we should treat 2/25/2019 6:18 PM them as such, trying to hold them in the manner designed by the Olmsteds. 102 I am interested in the restoration of Colman Park slope which has been largely neglected for the 2/25/2019 5:52 PM last 30 years. 103 Why is the Olmsted legacy of Cowen park being ignored, while others are revered? Cowen should 2/25/2019 5:30 PM have a lot more forested tree cover as the Olmsted folks designed. Also, if the Olmsted folks were hired today they would laugh at your ridged commitment to a landscape plan developed before flight, before the Model T, etc., I am sure they would turn the boulevards into rain gardens filled with drought tolerant evergreen conifers, and stop planting invasive red horse chestnut trees! 104 Friends of Colman Park Vista has worked for over 3 years trying to get Seattle Parks to listen to 2/25/2019 5:19 PM community input. It was ignored. Hope this can change!!! 105 I'm an avid walker and have visited most of the parks in the city. I'm particularly proud of the 2/25/2019 5:13 PM Olmsted legacy 106 Excellent history in the report. Very well done 2/25/2019 5:06 PM 107 Even tho' a resident of WSeattle for 30 years haven't been to Schmitz Pk. It's isolated and difficult 2/25/2019 3:21 PM to find entrance. Obviously not as designed. Would like better connection. On1st visit to Lk Washington Blvd pier & bathhouse near Mt Baker, delighted to find historical info about the park. 108 I have lived here for 40 years and lived near interlsken park for 25 years. I never knew about the 2/25/2019 1:42 PM Olmsted plan until a few years ago. We need to build public awareness of this great system we have. I learned. About the system while studying a small sign/poster at Coleman Beach last year. How about organized bus or bike tours of the whole system? Better signage? 109 Years ago, Parks approved a plan to top big leaf maples on the upper slope of Colman Park. For 2/25/2019 1:22 PM 30+ years those topped trees were neglected leaving sprouts to grow, obliterating a once- gorgeous vista that people from all over the city came to enjoy. The Olmsteds saw the value in preserving views of beautiful scenery (naming lakes and mountains specifically). They saw parks as places that could be enjoyed by everyone particularly in urban settings. Despite the wishes of an engaged community, Parks decided to plant large trees along the upper slope and retain numerous big leaf maples. The community invested time and money in the restoration of the Olmsteds’ vision for Colman Park. We would like Parks to collaborate and partner with the community in achieving this goal. 110 Please restore Colman Park, especially the vista from the upper slope which specifically allows all 2/25/2019 12:30 PM passesrby to view Mt. Rainier and Lake Washington, as originally envisioned by the Olmsteds.

111 Lake Wash Blvd should have lower speed limit 2/25/2019 12:15 PM 112 Please keep integrating more opportunities for people on bikes to access and move through 2/25/2019 11:39 AM Olmsted parks. I love the incorporation of biking on Ravenna Blvd and would love to see similar in other Olmsted Parks. Biking and walking make parks much safer and more peaceful and pleasant than when cars and car parking dominate.

113 Like the Constitution, parks designed by the Olmsted Brothers should be guided by the vision and 2/25/2019 11:36 AM plan, but adapted to the realities and priorities of today. In this sense, we should ask, "what is the vision for this park, and what are the values that guide it?", not be limited by a plan that was developed over a century ago. 114 Graduated from WS High School and still visit frequently. Please restore Hiawatha. It is much 2/25/2019 11:24 AM loved and much used! 115 Restoration of the Vista of Lake Washington and Mt. Rainier from upper Colman Park is long 2/25/2019 11:12 AM overdue and has significant community support. 116 I think Colman Park has been neglected for far too long. Recently there was some 2/25/2019 11:08 AM thinning/removal of envasive species on the upper slope of the park, but much more needs to be done to return the park to the original Olmsted vision. Please allocate resources to this long overdue restoration project, which has strong community support. 117 As our population grows, green spaces are more necessary than ever--both as destinations and 2/25/2019 10:59 AM as green routes that enhance our travel between locations. The history is important for newcomers to realize the importance of these places over the generations and to be part of their preservation and enjoyment. 118 The dramatic vista that used to be visible from the upper slope of Colman Park includes Mt. 2/25/2019 10:49 AM Rainier and Lake Washington. The viewpoint was a key part of the Olmsted vision for Colman Park. Restoration of the upper slope to the Olmsted vision has significant community support. Parks has neglected Colman Park’s Olmsted legacy for 30+ years. Here is a great opportunity to change course and restore this park. 119 specific request that Colman Park be restored, including the vista from the upper slope 2/25/2019 10:48 AM 120 Please, please have the flexibility and perspective to add sidewalks, paths, bike trails, and any 2/25/2019 10:47 AM other walk/bike facility to these parks -- if they don't have them already -- to make them more attractive and safe to people who aren't driving. I understand that this wasn't a part of the original Olmsted vision in all cases, but times have changed and these updates are critical to keeping the Olmsted parks and boulevards special, safe, and accessible for everyone. Thank you. 121 Renovating the Olmsted parks is nice, but neighbors without Olmsted parks are the 2/25/2019 10:28 AM neighborhood/communities most in need of accessible parks. Please focus on neighborhoods that haven't had the privilege of hosting Olmsted parks. 122 I am porusd of Seattles Olmsted legacy. I think that legacy does not need to be maintined as a 2/25/2019 10:26 AM required history lesson to users, but by being the amazing park experience the Olmsteads were so keen in shaping... its about the experience, not the interpertation! 123 · The scenic vista which includes Mt. Rainier and Lake Washington was a key part of the Olmsted 2/25/2019 10:08 AM vision for this park and a crucial element of enticing and welcoming the public into Colman Park. · Restoration of the upper slope to the Olmsted vision has significant community support. · Colman Park’s Olmsted legacy has been neglected for 30+ years. 124 Please restore and maintain the Colman Park vista at the upper slope. The street, 31st Ave S, is a 2/25/2019 10:02 AM highly used walking and biking path for many of the neighbors.

125 · The scenic vista which includes Mt. Rainier and Lake Washington was a key part of the Olmsted 2/25/2019 9:37 AM vision for this park and a crucial element of enticing and welcoming the public into Colman Park. · Restoration of the upper slope to the Olmsted vision has significant community support. · Colman Park’s Olmsted legacy has been neglected for 30+ years. 126 The upper slope of Colman Park should be restored to take advantage of the scenic views of Mt. 2/25/2019 9:33 AM Rainier and Lake Washington as the Olmsteds initially intended. Once cleared, it's very welcoming to the public as 31st ave s is already a well used street for cyclists, hikers, and runners. This would connect upper to the lower and build upon the huge community support already exhibited by the surrounding neighborhoods. 127 For the love of goodness - reclaim the tens of millions of dollars of encroached upon SPR property 2/25/2019 8:48 AM along the Olmstead Parks! 128 I love Olmstead Parks. Thank you for maintaining them. 2/25/2019 12:29 AM 129 The city should be putting monies into parks and boulevards that are in low income neighborhoods 2/24/2019 10:49 PM instead of continuing to improve already wealthy neighborhoods

27 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

130 Focus on parks where youth and children are concentrated. Dunn Gardens should be more 2/24/2019 10:13 PM accessible and open to the public. 131 Thank you Mr. Olmsted!!! 2/24/2019 8:39 PM 132 I love the Olmsted vision and parks 2/24/2019 6:40 PM

133 Originally from Boston, I was delighted to find the beauty of Olmsted Paris here. Vital spaces. 2/24/2019 6:04 PM 134 I hope the parks don't get "over-groomed" as a result of improvements. 2/24/2019 4:36 PM 135 We love parks! They are critical community spaces. Big fan of Olmsted! 2/24/2019 4:10 PM 136 The city of Seattle population has greatly increased and is in need of more parks and maintenance 2/24/2019 3:51 PM to existing parks. Olmsted Park Commission can be central to these needs. 137 We need more large native conifers along the Boulevards. 2/24/2019 2:50 PM

138 Time for common sense with respect to the native-species zealots 2/24/2019 9:02 AM 139 Olmstead started on the UW Campus & then designed the Blvd north of campus (17th avenue, 2/24/2019 12:05 AM Ravenna Blvd, & Ravenna Park) 140 The original Olmsted vision was to have boulevards and parks connect throughout the city, so that 2/23/2019 11:56 PM people could travel around Seattle and always be in or near a park like setting. While this did not come to full fruition, it would be nice to expand the boulevard system to accomplish this vision. 141 I'm not sure about the prioritizing part, I just hope that the best thinking for preserving the parks for 2/23/2019 10:16 PM posterity informs the final decisions. I just found out that I am distantly related to the Olmsteds. Their first ancestor in the country was my 9th great-grand and the lines diverged in the 5th generation. I have always admired their work and finding out we have common history just adds spice to that. 142 Biking and walking experience should be prioritized. 2/23/2019 10:01 PM 143 Let’s give QA some much needed help on the QA boulevard. 2/23/2019 9:19 PM 144 I love the Olmstead Parks. They are very important to Seattle 2/23/2019 8:58 PM 145 My Great Grandfather, Ambrose Ernst, was the Seattle Park Commissioner in 1905ish and was 2/23/2019 8:58 PM instrumental in our city workjng with the Olmsteads in creating many the parks here. He was considered the Father of Seattle Ballfields & a big advocate for green spaces here. They named a park after him some years ago. (AB Ernst in Fremont.). I would appreciate more information on how I can become involved in supporting the renovations in some way. I am thankful for what the Seattle Parks & Rec has contributed to our community all these years and would love to be a part in its future... My contact info is: [email protected] 206-446-1317 Thank you, Marianne Spring 146 Improvements should be made in parks that are in most need of improvements and serve those 2/23/2019 7:48 PM least able to travel and have recreational and outdoor/natural activities otherwise. 147 These parks have significant historical value for Seattle and it’s important for all future generations 2/23/2019 7:40 PM to know about these city assets 148 Is there a specific web site for the Seattle Olmsted Parks. 2/23/2019 7:00 PM 149 While we have unprecedented population growth we are losing our open space. We must treasure 2/23/2019 6:55 PM and care for what we have. 150 Need to improve and maintain Magnolia Blvd Park as a view park. It has been neglected too long 2/23/2019 6:43 PM 151 The parkways are nice for driving, but the parks are essential for exercise, games and enjoyment 2/23/2019 5:59 PM of nature. 152 I would like to see the benefits of these projects reach as large and diverse a population as 2/23/2019 5:48 PM possible. That said, I have seen too many partial projects languish while waiting for more cash. Often the benefit of what is accomplished gets while waiting for the entire renovation to be completed.

153 Seattle's parks are unequally distributed! We should leave the Olmstead parks as is and make 2/23/2019 5:40 PM more. Public golf courses should be converted to park/dense housing along the Central Park model! 154 Community fundraising is an avenue I’d be interested in helping pursue for my area. 2/23/2019 5:14 PM

28 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

155 All Parks staff should be more knowledgeable about the Olmsted legacy and this knowledge 2/23/2019 4:56 PM should help to guide routine decision making regarding maintenance and development. 156 Thank you for this project! 2/23/2019 4:38 PM

157 Glad to live in a city that values its public spaces. 2/23/2019 4:15 PM 158 If you can't fund all of the projects, seems you could incorporate a fundraising project benefiting 2/23/2019 4:13 PM projects that fall out of the budget. 159 we walk the Magnolia Blvd. daily - its a beautiful, safe place for people and pets! 2/23/2019 3:59 PM 160 Since I live on S. Mt. Baker Boulevard, I'm interested in its upkeep and maintenance. I helped 2/23/2019 3:32 PM plant new trees a number of years ago and just wondered if there plans for continued improvement. 161 Magnolia blvd has community and resources ready to Maintain the park when renovations are 2/23/2019 3:21 PM completed 162 We want funding for Magnolia Boulevard Park because of greatest need 2/23/2019 3:20 PM 163 I am sorry Seward Park was not included in the survey. 2/23/2019 1:42 PM

164 The City needs to take steps to re-acquire the WashDot peninsula, i.e. the area south of SR 520 2/23/2019 1:23 PM between Lake Washington Boulevard and Foster Island Drive. This was part of the original Washington Park and dropped when SR 520 planning started. It is wetland and some upland east of Lake Washington Park where there was until recently parking. SR 520 has not replaced any of the park land taken, such as , the Old Canal Right-of-Way (which was part of the Arboretum) and parts of Montlake Boulevard. The replacement land is on the north side of the Ship Canal and planned to be integrated into the UW Campus. The City needs to make recovery of the WSDOT peninsula its prime priority. If it does nothing, the housing advocates will campaign for the uplands and the only public benefit will be the wetlands that Federal regulations prohibit usage. The whole should be part of the Arboretum. 165 This is a worthy cause and long overdue 2/23/2019 1:05 PM 166 Thank you! 2/23/2019 12:59 PM 167 . 2/23/2019 12:52 PM 168 Thank you for your work on this important project! I feel the Olmstead's parks and boulevards are 2/23/2019 12:35 PM extremely important to the City of Seattle and should be given high priority to be maintained and improved where needed. It's a legacy that was well thought out and implemented and now we need to be diligent stewards. Thank you! 169 This is a weird survey. I’m not sure what input you’re getting from anyone. I hope it serves your 2/23/2019 12:33 PM purpose! 170 Currently living in Las Vegas NV. I did live in Seattle and Tacoma, 1973-86 and really appreciate 2/23/2019 11:56 AM the parks in western Washington. It's ok if you can't count my choice. Very happy you are focused on improving what is not easily replaced. 171 The parks with the greatest traffic should get the most attention. 2/23/2019 11:46 AM 172 Repair and restore parks. Don't do anything stupid like putting in zip line courses. Make the parks 2/23/2019 11:41 AM safely accessible to the neighborhood people as well as visitors. There was a time when these parks were visited by people from all over the world because of their beauty and importance in park design. Embrace and enhance the original vision. 173 [email protected] 2/23/2019 11:15 AM 174 The legacy of beauty and culturally rich open spaces to move around in is an undervalued part of 2/23/2019 10:43 AM the skeleton of Seattle that makes this city so great. It is imperative to enhance and create more of these beautiful spaces. Our psychological well being depends on it more than we know. 175 Community support should be a paramount concern of P&R - eliciting the support of neighbors will 2/23/2019 10:32 AM go a long way to ensure success. 176 Maintenance nd safety first. 2/23/2019 10:17 AM 177 This vision to establish connected green-spaces throughout Seattle is an integral part of the soul 2/23/2019 10:14 AM of our great city. 178 Improvements should match the original designs. 2/23/2019 9:42 AM

29 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

179 Community Fundraising is good to get people invested in the projects but there are neighborhoods 2/23/2019 9:07 AM where it won’t work. Choose less affluent neighborhoods for more fully funded improvements. 180 With the Viaduct down, and possibly the Magnolia Bridge, incomparable views afforded the Ursula 2/23/2019 8:45 AM Judkins' Viewpoint Park will soon be lost to the public. It behooves the city to capitalize on the uniqueness of the UJVP vista. 181 Arboretum Needs more gardens 2/23/2019 8:36 AM 182 Please try to keep within the original Olmsted vision when embarking upon improving these sites. 2/23/2019 8:19 AM

183 thanks for asking 2/23/2019 8:06 AM 184 The Queen Anne Boulevard is in dire need of reclamation and renovation. First we need education 2/23/2019 7:57 AM because so few know and understand the Olmsted parks. Thank you. 185 Ursula Judkins Viewpoint Park needs serious improvement. Could be one of the best viewpoint 2/23/2019 7:50 AM parks in the city with a little effort.

186 How did you pick the 10 parks in the study? What was the criteria? I'm shocked (but not surprised- 2/23/2019 7:16 AM typical Seattle governance) to see the 10 parks are in predominately white neighborhoods. 187 I love these parks! 2/23/2019 2:11 AM 188 The Master Plan said to add Fort Lawton to Discovery Park. City parks stated that Discovery Park 2/22/2019 11:37 PM is the crown jewel. It won’t be after the greenspace is gone and the Park has been irreversibly damaged forever. Save greenspace! This parcel is precious and once lost will be lost forever!!!!! 189 Tree pruning and sidewalk renovation would be a good place to start. 2/22/2019 11:24 PM 190 I appreciate the display at Volunteer Park. There could be better historical signage near entrances 2/22/2019 11:00 PM and wakking paths. 191 Olmsted parks and boulevards are wonderful connections between neighborhoods and I think 2/22/2019 10:01 PM people would respect them more if they knew of the history and the expectations Olmsted had.

192 I've learned recently, to my delight, that I'm related to the Olmsted brothers. I spend so much time 2/22/2019 9:57 PM in their parks around the city - this very much pleases me! 193 So happy this project is being considered and to be asked for input! 2/22/2019 9:45 PM 194 I would like to better understand the vision, goals and objectives of these parks. I like the idea of 2/22/2019 9:43 PM these parks, but how does it serve Seattle currently?

195 So glad to see this! I love our urban parks and areas and use them regularly. Thx 2/22/2019 9:37 PM 196 These special parks require upkeep and improvements. The quality of our city depends on the 2/22/2019 8:56 PM beauty and accessibility of these parks. Without beautifully designed parks, we have no places to find peace and contemplation. 197 Olmsted is such an old historic concept, its rather refreshing to know its still a valid viable 2/22/2019 8:51 PM important part of this city 198 Please use real arborists when pruning trees. We've had some trees butchered up here on Queen 2/22/2019 8:42 PM Anne. 199 I regularly lead bike tours Cyclists of Greater Seattle that explore the Olmsted legacy in Seattle. 2/22/2019 8:22 PM 200 I would request more input available to the public about specific park improvements. For example 2/22/2019 8:14 PM the NW section of Hiawatha Park has the same look and feel of a miniature Central Park with the pathway and trees. I wouldn't want any changes to that area that changes the look and feel of that experience. 201 Until I saw this survey I didn't know that any of our parks were Olmsted parks! What I did know, 2/22/2019 8:09 PM and believe very much, is that the more parks the better for our community. 202 I may have been to other Olmstead parks on the list but may not know all the names/ locations 2/22/2019 7:58 PM

203 Although not original to the Olmsted Plan, please do NOT cut down the blooming cherry trees 2/22/2019 7:22 PM along Lake WA blvd south. 204 Please try to maintain the elegance of the original olmsted designs. Also cleR brush that could be 2/22/2019 7:17 PM fire risk. And do not let homeless encampments live in the parks. 205 Volunteer Park needs to be addressed first. It is the most visible and most dangerous. 2/22/2019 7:15 PM

30 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

206 Will you be looking for volunteers to help with the work? On Earth Day, many people like to 2/22/2019 7:09 PM volunteer to improve local public spaces. Maybe you could get some work parties going on Earth Day. 207 I currently use Magnolia Boulevard frequently and have done so whenever possible over a period 2/22/2019 6:59 PM of 50 years. I would be delighted to see it restored to its former beauty.

208 We need to maintain our parks in the city without destroying them. 2/22/2019 6:41 PM 209 Remove non-native trees over time. Remove dead snags in open park areas, there is enough bird 2/22/2019 6:32 PM habitat in the woodlands. E.g. at Seward Park beach field 210 The parks need to be saved. I was horrified many years ago to see Mt Baker Park right before a 2/22/2019 6:30 PM huge community effort to refurbish it. It was so overgrown that you could hardly see that there was a stream running through the lower part of it. 211 I’m curious what the criteria is for park consideration.... why isn’t Seward Park on the list? 2/22/2019 6:23 PM 212 Hurray for this work. As the City gets ever denser, our parks get ever more important. 2/22/2019 6:07 PM 213 Homage to the Olmsteads is often a reason for a lot of Parks silliness. The new tennis courts at 2/22/2019 5:55 PM Seward Park were green not the current contrasting blue/green or red because a Parks "landscape arch." decided to honor the Olmsteads. The Olmsteads designed over 700 parks. I don't think they would have objected. 214 Create neighborhood Park Partners, so communities can help to maintain and care for these 2/22/2019 5:48 PM parks and alleviate some of the burden on our parks systems (not enough money or people). Also, I think it would be wonderful to educate residents who live on or right next to these parks, many people don't even know they are on a park. Getting people to feel invested in their surroundings will go a long way towards getting them to care about these parks. 215 Coleman park or Lincoln Park & Smitz Park in West Seattle need some serious improvements. It 2/22/2019 5:44 PM seems that it has been pretty much neglected. It’s a shame to see such a public resource become so neglected

216 Thank you ~ 2/22/2019 5:34 PM 217 Wonderful to have so many great parks in the city. I'm surprised Seward and Lincoln are not on 2/22/2019 5:29 PM your list--very important parks! 218 Take some ques from MetroParks Cleveland. Despite that city's challenges, it has maintained its 2/22/2019 5:14 PM Olmsted designed parks making them some of the nicest urban getaways in the nation. 219 Am very happy that Seattle is preserving these green spaces. 2/22/2019 4:55 PM

220 These parks are treasures - but so is EVERY park. I would like to see them beautifully maintained 2/22/2019 4:43 PM for all to enjoy - but never at the expense of other parks. And I would like to make sure that every park is preserved for use and enjoyment for all citizens, particularly those without access to home yards, gardens, or sports facilities. Encampments should be removed to other locations. 221 I'm excited to see improvements to the Olmsteads' legacy in Seattle! 2/22/2019 4:26 PM

222 The most urgent issues to me with Olmsted sr and jr park and blvd systems around the country 2/22/2019 4:24 PM are: 1) walking safety and access — boulevards and perimeter streets have often been maintained in outmoded and never-intended states that are, in today’s times, dangerous for walking/crossing, lacking needed traffic controls (often simply needing four-way stop signs at all intersections/park entries, sometimes requiring some curb bulbs and heavier intersection reconfig) and 2) Ecological voids that the original designers, had they understood local (especially west coast) ecology, would have certainly avoided by using more native trees and plants. The intention was to preserve and present nature to the populace — let us bring nature back into these parks and boulevards as they are in many cases the only remnants left for migratory birds and native insects.

223 When I lived in Baltimore there was a Friends of Olmsted Parks that helped raise awareness of the 2/22/2019 4:21 PM history and promoted the preservation of the Olmsted legacy. The group was called Friends of Maryland Olmsted Parks and Landscapes (https://www.olmstedmaryland.org). I recommend that Seattle work with interested community members to form a local branch. When I moved to Seattle I was thrilled to see the Olmsted legacy as I explored my new home town. But I'd venture to guess that many residents have no idea that we live in the middle of this history and legacy. 224 Traffic calming measures around the parks are important. The Mt. Baker and Colman parks have 2/22/2019 4:21 PM cars constantly speeding through the adjacent streets and intersections which results in noise, lower safety, and a poorer atmosphere

31 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

225 Use the money to implement - not more planning 2/22/2019 4:16 PM 226 all of the Olmstead park upgrades should have estimates and then funding raised to complete the 2/22/2019 4:14 PM work. 227 Parks should partner with local community group to assure continued maintenance 2/22/2019 4:13 PM

228 Safety for our kids should be priority #1. 2/22/2019 4:08 PM 229 These parks are an important part of our city’s history and culture. Everything possible should be 2/22/2019 4:01 PM done to preserve them and keep them viable for the use of our citizens. 230 I didn't recognize the names of some of these parks. A map would have been helpful. Thank you! 2/22/2019 4:00 PM 231 "...native plants in his creation of scenery. He used many plants that were already part of the 2/22/2019 3:59 PM landscape character of the place and he knew they would thrive with little care."

232 I would like improvements that emphasize their use as safe, comfortable, low-speed routes. Many 2/22/2019 3:54 PM "Olmsted" boulevards have been paved with asphalt and are used for regular commuter traffic, so cars go faster. However, because of their historical significance, changes to the street geometry, which might calm traffic, are not allowed. It is very frustrating. It seems ok to completely cover the original brick paving but not ok to make the streets safer for pedestrians. 233 I think our Olmsted park system is amazing and one of my favorite parts of living in Seattle! 2/22/2019 3:50 PM 234 I fully support getting more community organizations involved, in particular movement 2/22/2019 3:50 PM communities like parkour and dance organizations who often look for unique spaces and parks to hold events and could help share the history and value of Olmsted parks and boulevards 235 The QA Boulevard on 8th West is trashy . the big stairs down the wall have been loaded with litter, 2/22/2019 3:49 PM discarded clothes, feces and gardens on weeds since Parks refused to service the litter receptacle about 2 years ago, and removed it. Here is a showpoint for Seattle. Tour busses stop every day for the view. And the stairs are a garbage pit!! 236 I keep bees in Mt Baker, and keeping the Linden trees up there alive and well are the beekeepers 2/22/2019 3:48 PM highest priority!!!

237 Interpretive signs are always appriciated, perhaps a map highlighting the Olmstead parks could be 2/22/2019 3:44 PM made and shared. I'm not sure which parks are Olmsteads. 238 Use by people who live here and visit the park should have an impact as well. 2/22/2019 3:39 PM 239 I love parks and boulevards that I can walk or bike commute through or near. It makes me more 2/22/2019 3:32 PM likely to stop and enjoy the park, and the entire experience is enjoyable!

240 It's nice to focus a bit on our history when we are in the midst of this building boom of mostly ugly 2/22/2019 3:31 PM buildings. 241 I believe that tying the grants to community fundraising is an important way to make the money go 2/22/2019 3:28 PM further. Though there should also be an attempt to ensure that parks in lower income neighbors are treated equitably.

242 I would prioritize installing path and street lighting (imitation gas lamps, for example) at Green 2/22/2019 3:20 PM Lake to improve safety and aesthetics 243 This issue is very important to me. 2/22/2019 3:11 PM 244 We are fortunate to have some beautiful parks. Let's keep them beautiful. 2/22/2019 3:08 PM 245 We are blessed by our Olmstead Parks and we should do anything and everything possible to 2/22/2019 2:55 PM maintain them for future generations.

246 Would like to see more funds going to removing invasive species and restoration at Seward Park 2/22/2019 2:46 PM 247 Olmsted’s legacy of beautifully planned and planted parks and blvds is one to be cherished, 2/22/2019 2:45 PM renovated as needed and enjoyed. 248 Lakeview is almost unknown and is quite beautiful. 2/22/2019 2:44 PM 249 Stop letting people camp illegally in the parks and greenways. That would greatly improve 2/22/2019 2:31 PM Woodland Park. 250 I love that the city is doing this! I had forgotten about these parks -- they are an important part of 2/22/2019 2:29 PM our history, and part of what makes Seattle enduringly beautiful.

32 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

251 Removal of invasive vegetation that are choking trees and shrubs should be a priority 2/22/2019 2:27 PM 252 Create jobs and apprenticeships for people needing work while improving the parks. Ex. the CCC 2/22/2019 2:23 PM during the depression.

253 We moved here from NYC (of Central Park fame) over thirty years ago and have always loved 2/22/2019 2:17 PM being near one of the Olmsted parks at each place we've lived in Seattle. 254 Trees! Heal sick trees, don't hack them down. Plant more trees. 2/22/2019 2:16 PM 255 Believe there is a history of racism around Olmsted? Cherish the parks, but not sure we need to 2/22/2019 2:07 PM celebrate him.

256 Please improve at Cowen Park. 2/22/2019 1:59 PM 257 I walk the Olmstead park area on QA every week and noticed many houses have taken over 2/22/2019 1:58 PM public space such that people can no longer walk where they used to. Trees h e been planted, rockeries installed, etc for example. This is taking away public space. I encourage the planning process to include a review of private encroachment of public space so walkways can be made available to the public again. Thank you 258 Plant more heritage trees. 2/22/2019 1:55 PM 259 I hope that whatever improvements are made align with the original ideas for the park 2/22/2019 1:53 PM 260 Are there going to be any additional plans for Seward Park? 2/22/2019 1:50 PM 261 Our community just had a talk on the Olmstead Seattle Park system on Wednesday evening by 2/22/2019 1:45 PM Donald Harris. Very good and very informative. He should be speaking in more communities to inform Seattleites. 262 parks served by new or existing transit is important. Also places that have potential to be tourism 2/22/2019 1:42 PM draw 263 See above re Interlaken Also provide more trash cans everywhere and empty them regularly 2/22/2019 1:39 PM Enforce laws about not dumping plastic bags of dog poop on walkways

264 Information on the importance of these parks and the Olmstead history should be promoted to city 2/22/2019 1:37 PM residents, especially newcomers. 265 Surprised this is the first I've hard of this project 2/22/2019 1:29 PM 266 To amend my response to #3, it's important to remember that whatever work is done should not 2/22/2019 1:29 PM exhaust the funds so deeply that it can't be maintained over time. It's a shame that so much enthusiasm goes into capital projects and then afterwards the project is not kept up as soon as shiny new projects come along. 267 Schmitz Park is such an important area because it most resembles the land before colonization. I 2/22/2019 1:28 PM hope the special qualities of Schmitz park can be highlighted. Thank you for the work and I love our parks!

268 I hope the south end gets as much attention, even though we don't have Olmsted parks. Maybe 2/22/2019 1:24 PM there should be some modern equivalent funded for us down south. 269 Not sure what you mean by 'improvements'. Please keep the parks as Olmsted would have 2/22/2019 1:24 PM designed them and just replace aging structures, trees, walkways and streets! 270 Having lived in other cities with Olmsted Parks I vanuebot their history and their beauty. It’s 2/22/2019 1:23 PM important to restore, maintain, and educate about them. 271 The Olmsted parks are masterfully designed treasures, maintaining them and updating their use 2/22/2019 1:15 PM for modern times is a worthy investment 272 I would like to be part of a discussion to change the name "Lake Washington Blvd. to Olmsted 2/22/2019 1:09 PM Blvd. 273 Thank you for addressing this! 2/22/2019 1:03 PM

274 Prioritize the parks that are in less wealthy/white areas of Seattle 2/22/2019 12:56 PM 275 Plz keep fighting forthem! 2/22/2019 12:55 PM 276 Feel bad for homeless but they are destroying the parks, making Park areas unsafe. No camping 2/22/2019 12:49 PM needs to be enforced.

33 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

277 Please improve the QA Boulevard. It has been neglected for far too long. Improvements will 2/22/2019 12:49 PM increase the walkability around QA and all its parks and services. 278 Seattle should probably start adding more off leash areas for dogs as the work on these parks. 2/22/2019 12:44 PM 279 Tree roots causing uneven sidewalks have created a significant tripping hazard on the Queen 2/22/2019 12:44 PM Anne Boulevard in many places. This park is heavily used by all ages and is a big concern as are places were trees have died and not been replaced. 280 NO expenditures on parks until the homeless problem is in control and an audit on prior 2/22/2019 12:43 PM improvements is viewed by the public. 281 I'd love to be part of any volunteer activities around fundraising or restoration! 2/22/2019 12:42 PM 282 Would love to be involved on projects! Can offer social media, planning/policy/design, park 2/22/2019 12:41 PM photography. Colleen Whitten Sax on LinkedIn. 206-551-6023 283 Those are old historical photos are the top of this survey. Many I recognize from historical 2/22/2019 12:38 PM archives, though I suspect many people wouldn't. It would be nice if you provided larger versions and identified them for people. Thank you. 284 Our parks and their history is very important to our city which has endured so many changes 2/22/2019 12:34 PM recently. 285 I’m afraid to use some of these as much doe to people living / camping in them. 2/22/2019 12:34 PM

286 The City can't afford to improve and more importantly maintain the properties that is currently has. 2/22/2019 12:32 PM Some of the Olmstead Boulevard properties no longer fit the growing, higher density plans for the city. The lack of sidewalks, the failure of Parks to maintain even the trees, let alone the grounds, is emblematic of how Parks has performed for many decades. Keep what you can afford and manage; sell the rest to residents and use the tax income for the Parks budget.

287 I would like a map of the parks. 2/22/2019 12:31 PM 288 Fascinating history 2/22/2019 12:31 PM 289 This is it? One question of substance? How much did this cost and why bother? Of course there 2/22/2019 12:31 PM should be a rotation of upkeep and improvements to the various parks throughout the City, and the Parks Department (or whatever it is now) shouldn't have to ask citizens about this. What's the alternative? Randomly improving parks, only in high income areas, only in neighborhoods that complain the most? C'mon, ask stuff like "what features would you most like to see," "what area do you see while in the parks that need more regular maintenance," or "should there be more safety lighting and recycle containers around Green Lake?"(YES! and YES!). 290 I am familiar with the Olmsted parks but always want to hear more 2/22/2019 12:30 PM

291 These parks and boulevards must be maintained. They are part of what makes Seattle livable. 2/22/2019 12:29 PM With so much new construction, we have precious little beauty and green space left in this city. These important places cannot fall into neglect. 292 It was always surprising to me that much of Queen Anne Boulevard doesn't have sidewalks for 2/22/2019 12:29 PM pedestrian safety. It's such a popular walk/run, and cars get awfully close to strollers. I'd love to see more attention paid to it. 293 I love our parks but rarely go to the ones near my home anymore because of needles, trash, feces, 2/22/2019 12:28 PM fires and rampant drug use and criminal/antisocial behavior on the part of resident campers. So while I would love to see restoration of these historically significant places, there seems little point when they will only be trashed again by homeless campers.

294 I am such a fan of public parks. I live in beacon hill and Jefferson park has completely enriched 2/22/2019 12:27 PM the area. It is teeming with kids and families. It shows that if u build it- people will enjoy it and be inspired by it and it will creat me a better community 295 Don't forget the South End and Beacon Hill. And as you restore, please keep all of the parks 2/22/2019 12:26 PM welcoming and accessible to all. Don't be precious; don't gentrify; don't turn it in to something other than a place to enjoy nature in your own way. 296 I would love to see Interlaken Park on this list. It is in need of attention. The Park and Boulevard 2/22/2019 12:25 PM connect Montlake to both Capitol Hill and the Arboretum.

34 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

297 I think the spirit of the Olmsted work - careful craft, excellent materials, and integrated nature and 2/22/2019 12:25 PM built work are the values the work should address and not explicitly doing projects that exactly replicate previous Olmsted work. I think it's important that work done to support Seattle's community Olmsted legacy also acknowledge the racially-restrictive covenants that Olmsted supported, directly or indirectly through his and/or the firm's work.

298 Restore wetlands 2/22/2019 12:24 PM 299 I'm interested in knowing the changes proposed. This is really too general to know. 2/22/2019 12:22 PM 300 I have lived on Capitol Hill and West Seattle prior to moving to Northgate and I think that the 2/22/2019 12:20 PM Olmstead parks are some of the most beautifully thought out and relaxing greenspaces in the city. 301 The condition of the Olmsted Parks boulevards is dismal, especially Lake Washington Blvd. There 2/22/2019 12:19 PM seems to be a problem of both SDOT and Parks neglecting this important legacy. Denny Blaine Park is practically unusable now because of the influx of nude bathers, and Madrona Beach Park is not well maintained. 302 This is a very worthy project and I understand the early public engagement. Just looking for more 2/22/2019 12:15 PM actionable information.

303 Landscape maintenance of Magnolia Blvd requires a meaningful operating budget commitment. 2/22/2019 10:57 AM 304 Please consider prioritizing parks in neighborhoods with lower access to green space. Often these 2/22/2019 7:22 AM surveys get hijacked by those in well-resources neighborhoods like mine, and resources are yet again unfairly distributed. 305 This is awesome! 2/21/2019 11:47 PM 306 The Hiawatha playground needs an overhaul 2/21/2019 11:29 PM

307 Thank you. 2/21/2019 9:58 PM 308 I agree with the recommendation to pave the access driveway at Hiawatha. It's been regraded and 2/21/2019 9:56 PM filled to the point where it's elevation is greater than the surrounding field. This causes water and mud to run off and settle on the exterior basketball court. Currently said court will sometimes serve as an overflow parking lot for Comm. Center staff, which I do not agree with. Some sort of separation between the court and driveway might help 309 I wish the olmstead parks would consider having safe areas for dog families to go. 2/21/2019 8:54 PM 310 Super appreciate that we have a good park system and are working to maintain it, especially as 2/21/2019 8:12 PM rapidly expanding development feels like many more buildings are sort of looming over us and visually reducing the feeling of space and green.

311 The Olmsted history is very important! The Olmsted philosophy was critical to the development of 2/21/2019 5:53 PM today's urbanist living standards. Continuing to learn the 's urban planning will build support for greenspace for future generatrions. 312 Historical relevance is impotent to me. I'd hate to see us lose that in some of the Olmsted Parks 2/21/2019 5:38 PM that have been underfunded. I think Volunteer Park has gotten a lot of improvements recently

313 I'd like to see the full Olmsted plan someday. More parks! 2/21/2019 4:58 PM 314 I am mobility impaired and walk with a cane. I get frustrated that ADA accomodations and 2/21/2019 3:00 PM improvements seem to focus only on wheelchair access. Wheelchair access is very important, but focusing on that only or primarily ignores that there is a much larger percentage of the population that needs help and is being ignored. Everyone from those dealing with a temporary injury, to those with lung disease or aging joints who can't walk far without rest stops. I love the Seattle parks and visit them frequently and I have a blog devoted to them and how accessible they are. In many parks there is a severe lack of benches and/or benches in the places they need to be. The new paved path at the arboretum is a good example of how it should be done. Someone with my limitations can still go for a walk because benches are placed frequently enough along the way that I can go much further and see more of the park because I can rest. is a travesty in this regard. One of the most visited parks in the city, and the only bench in the entire park is on the path half way up the hill. Olmstead Park is one of my favorites of the Olmstead parks on Lake Washington and could really use some benches and picnic tables at the upper level near parking. And really needs a bathroom, even if only a porta potty. 315 Improvements with public $ should be made in parks where there are not opportunities for 2/21/2019 2:34 PM fundraising. Allow for fundraising off of the success of those improvements.

35 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

316 The SAAM expansion is ugly, and no one in their right mind can disagree. I'd like that noted in the 2/21/2019 1:34 PM public comment record. 317 As a 3rd generation Seattleite, I grew up taking our city's history for granted. As the population 2/21/2019 1:33 PM continues to grow we have many opportunities to educate residents, both new and old, about Seattle history. This survey is exciting to me, because it shows an effort to leverage and promote historically significant Seattle gems! 318 Part of this project should include budget for ongoing park maintenance and upkeep, which at least 2/21/2019 12:37 PM for Hiawatha, has been severely lacking. There is no sense in restoring a park if we don’t intend to have a plan for maintaining it.

319 For the BLVD parks, please make sure we can continue to walk along the blvds during any 2/21/2019 12:11 PM restoration. I walk the Magnolia Blvd every weekend and on other days off. I don't want to lose access to my favorite walk during renovation. The city has closed off so many sidewalks in Magnolia and around the city for months, if not years for construction and it is very frustrating for walkers and for people who live in the area to loose sidewalks indefinately. 320 I would like notifications for volunteer work in Schmitz, Lincoln and kwa me mooks. Is there 2/21/2019 11:27 AM volunteer organizer contact info 321 They should add an off leash dog area in Hiawatha park! North West Seattle is the only place is 2/21/2019 11:01 AM Seattle where there isn't a OLA within 2.5mi and the location would be great. 322 Promote civic pride by completing this project to level the citizens would be proud of. I feel like 2/21/2019 10:56 AM major projects in Seattle usually suffer from lots of compromises that end up in disappointing projects that don't realize the original vision. 323 Please restore the children's wading pool at cal anderson park and remove the picnic table 2/21/2019 10:54 AM adjacent to it. It has been taken over by drug dealers and addicts. If the city doesn't have the political will to maintain a functioning picnic area, than please remove it. Please also address the rat infestation around the playground resulting from the garbage left by vagrants. 324 I think there's some tunnel vision here. No one cares about the architecture team itself or their 2/21/2019 10:38 AM intent. It's like sending a survey about wasterwater treatment plant improvements and if they should fall in line with the original designers' vision, justifying it by asking people their familiarity with the design team. 325 Fix the lighting on the of the park. It would be nice if one more light were added along the 2/21/2019 10:36 AM east side pathway between the south parking lot and where the swings are currently. 326 Seattle is very fortunate to have a number of parks designed by this family firm who had such a 2/21/2019 10:31 AM wonderful vision of how nature can be integrated into a city or community without losing it's essential identity while still being accessible to visitors the neighborhood. 327 I realize that these are historic parks and need to be "preserved" in some way. But I think the 2/21/2019 9:54 AM focus should not just be on "restoration", it should be on modern uses. 328 I complete, high-quality restoration is preferred, whichever the park, but equity and social justice 2/21/2019 9:54 AM must be considered. 329 I don't see restoring encroachments, especially along Lake Washington Blvd. as part of your 2/21/2019 9:14 AM strategy. I understood that if/when you undertook a project you would go after these property owners who are using Parks land as their property. aka Schultz. I also understand you are mandated by City Council to do this work. Why not? 330 I would love to see more historical documentation at Hiawatha Park. It's so rich in history and 2/21/2019 9:10 AM children enjoy seeing pictures and reading about the changes. I am also happy to see that the playground would be moved out of the wooded area and into the more open area. 331 (1) Interpretive elements (Olmsted legacy etc.) would not be appropriate in our parks. Did not see 2/21/2019 8:56 AM this in the report, but hoping question #4 isn't suggesting it. (2) Convert underused lawn areas to low, biodiverse prairie-type planting. (3) SPR should create skilled gardener team dedicated to Olmsted parks and capable of managing different planting typologies, from natural areas to manicured displays. They should have a solid understanding of Olmsted design principles and preserve them as part of their management approach. They could also serve as interpretive ambassadors to park visitors. 332 Thanks for receiving my input 2/21/2019 4:05 AM

36 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

333 Enthusiast of Olmsted and his contribution to American civic life and world history of a theory of 2/21/2019 12:01 AM public parks in cities. His legacy is a treasure to be guarded jealously. 334 1. It doesn't seem as though the new exercise equipment sees much use except by children 2/20/2019 11:52 PM climbing on it. 2. As a parent in the neighborhood, a splash park would be an invaluable amenity as opposed to a wading pool. It serves a wider age range of children and would get so much more use. West Seattle north has the largest elementary school in King county with Genesee Hill. Plus Lafayette across the street and Alki within the vicinity as well. We currently drive all the way to most days in the summer when we are within walking distance of Hiawatha. 335 I'd like to recommend a new playground for Hiawatha, as the current one is in need of updates and 2/20/2019 11:44 PM is often overcrowded. I also think a spray park to replace the wading pool would be useful, as I find the other West Seattle spray park is often packed with kids while the much larger wading pool doesn't get as much use (and appears to consume more water). Thanks for the consideration.

336 keep it green, keep it natural, get rid of invasive species, reinforce trails to prevent erosion, 2/20/2019 11:27 PM basically do what Evergreen MTB does. 337 I was born in Seattle and go back several generations, so Seattle history is very interesting to my 2/20/2019 11:21 PM family. The parks are a huge piece of what keeps my family here, and what makes Seattle so amazing.

338 I hope the upgrades don't compromise the intent of the initial architects. 2/20/2019 10:53 PM 339 I scanned your report and am very enthusiastic about the concept for Hiawatha. It has such a 2/20/2019 10:24 PM disjointed layout today, it really needs a reset. 340 Do not remove the play area from the shade of the trees. In the heat of the summer, there are 2/20/2019 10:16 PM limited parks you can go to with antsy kids. This is one. 341 Please don't let the parks decay so badly that people won't go to them anymore. Woodland Park is 2/20/2019 9:58 PM getting skanky because of the tent/RV/bush dwellers. 342 Thank you for recognizing the value of these century old spaces. My experience tells me that 2/20/2019 9:21 PM confusing to work with SPD to keep overnight parking at Woodland Park has been worthwhile, please continue. Additionally, though not part of Olsted original designs, finding some ways to maintain east-west passage through West Green Lake Way during events at Green Lake would benefit the surrounding neighborhoods. At these same events, increased parking would also be helpful. 343 Hiawatha is heavily used by the community at large (concerts, festivals, sporting, school events 2/20/2019 9:18 PM etc) and should be prioritized.

344 How about a dog park. There are non in west seattle. THere is westcress but that is in white center 2/20/2019 9:14 PM 345 Dog park 2/20/2019 9:11 PM 346 These parks are a huge asset for Seattle and should be treated like the jewels they are! 2/20/2019 9:08 PM 347 Seattle's Olmsted Parks are an important part of our heritage and provide soul lifting beauty and 2/20/2019 8:34 PM peace. 348 Homeless individuals and camps are making these parks an increasingly dangerous and less 2/20/2019 8:34 PM inviting center for our local communities. 349 Along with improvements we need to make sure there are funds directed towards maintenance. 2/20/2019 5:16 PM Maintenance is often left off the list when it makes no sense to improve our parks only to have them fall back into disrepair due to lack of funding for upkeep. 350 Super neat! Thank you for allowing community input! My husband and I are very interested in 2/20/2019 1:28 PM Seattle's Olmstead Parks because my husband is the great grandson of James Fredrick Dawson of the Olmsted brothers. 351 A fine study. Congratulations and thank you. Reinvestment in the Olmsted heritage park system is 2/20/2019 1:04 PM THE SINGLE MOST effective approach we have for relieving the pressure of the current surge of growth on the public city. Go back to the new City Council for major additional funding.

352 Improvements should be made in underserved communities where fundraising is less likely to 2/20/2019 12:46 PM occur from the adjacent community. 353 I do not live in Seattle, but nearby for three + years. I rarely travel to the city because traffic is so 2/20/2019 11:13 AM bad, and I find it usually annoying and expensive. Transit frequencies to the city via commuter rail needs to be improved to the northward communities.

37 / 72 Olmsted Parks and Boulevards Survey

354 The city should be more proactive with the homeless population and not allow them to damage 2/20/2019 10:13 AM our parks. Visit Woodland Park as an example. 355 Please support the MHA map amendments that would preserve status quo zoning for the City's 2/20/2019 9:12 AM proposed North Rainier Town Center Park, and help us call for implementation by the City while there is time to share livability with this underserved area 356 Per 3 above, its equally important to focus on those parks that haven't been improved upon in the 2/20/2019 8:27 AM last 7-10 yrs or so. There is limited funding, so doing a little bit here and there across all the Olmsted parks really isn't going to be effective 357 I’d like to see funding go towards restoring or rehabilitating historic features. 2/20/2019 1:14 AM 358 For their safety and full enjoyment of the parks, we need to move park campers out of parks. 2/19/2019 11:23 PM 359 Local community support, involvement and education is critical to all Olmsted Parks 2/19/2019 9:36 PM 360 I wonder why greenlake park is not listed. It is one of the most used parks in the north end. The 2/19/2019 5:38 PM community center could use an update. 361 Woodland Park is a high-use, centrally located park that serves many demographics: cross 2/19/2019 5:31 PM country runners, school and community group picnics, families, dog owners, etc. It has taken especially hard brunt of the homelessness/drug crisis — the environment has degraded, public safety worsened, and public uses greatly impacted. Please refresh the park and support safer uses for all (no camping, period!). Thank you 362 It would have been most helpful to have included a complete list of all the Olmstead Parks in the 2/19/2019 5:22 PM survey with the question of other Olmstead parks we have visited. I don’t want to see “@the rich get richer” I. e. Continued priority on improvements which can get big private donations like Queen Anne, Magnolia and the Arboretum. 363 Very important for cities to keep up their green areas for environmental reasons. Also, parks are 2/19/2019 5:16 PM common areas for community residents and so I believe they have a huge impact on socialization. 364 I vote for Woodlawn Park! 2/19/2019 5:06 PM 365 I wish Ravenna Boulevard was part of the final plans; it is a disgrace. 2/19/2019 4:46 PM 366 Happy and relieved to hear about serious efforts to restore these treasures. 2/19/2019 3:34 PM

367 I appreciate Seattle Parks & Recreation's planning to renovate some of these treasures. We are 2/19/2019 3:17 PM incredibly lucky to have these historic green spaces still extant in the city, but they need TLC!! 368 I walk this boulevard at least 4 times a week, enjoying the gorgeous views of the Sound and 2/19/2019 2:10 PM Olympics. However, for the last (I think) 5 years, the QA Blvd (8th W.) has slowly deteriorated. It used to be somewhat maintained, i.e. moss kept off the concrete wall, weeds pulled from the between the curb and the street, but something happened and now nothing has been done and it has clearly deteriorated. Every year there are tons of tour buses that cruise this boulevard, it is hard to understand why at least some effort has not been made to maintain a little of it's integrity! I look forward to seeing it cleaned up and restored. 369 Volunteer park is a seattle treasure. 2/19/2019 1:46 PM

370 I would like to see improvements to parks that are in areas not surrounded by lovely homes with 2/19/2019 1:12 PM park-like settings. Bring some beauty to areas where it will have the most impact. 371 The Parks Department should stop their arbitrary resistance to landmark designation by the 2/19/2019 12:25 PM Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board 372 It seems in question 3 - parks that have not had recent improvements could still be addressed 2/19/2019 10:22 AM under the "equal distribution" focus - 373 Thank you for all your work on this. 2/13/2019 6:16 PM
