Happy Independence Day to the Philippines! Saturday, June 12, 2021, is Philippines Independence Day, or as locals call it, “Araw ng Kasarinlan” (“Day of Freedom”). This annual national holiday honors Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo raised the Philippines flag for the first time and declared this date as Philippines Independence Day. Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo, and Delfina Herbosa designed the flag of the Philippines, which is famous for its golden sun with eight rays. The rays symbolize the first eight Philippine provinces that fought against Spanish colonial rule. After General Aguinaldo raised the flag, the San Francisco de Malabon marching band played the Philippines national anthem, “Lupang Hinirang,” for the first time. Spain, which had ruled the Philippines since 1565, didn’t recognize General Aguinaldo’s declaration of independence. But at the end of the Spanish-American War in May 1898, Spain surrendered and gave the U.S. control of the Philippines. In 1946, the American government wanted the Philippines to become a U.S. state like Hawaii, but the Philippines became an independent country. The U.S. granted sovereignty to the Philippines on July 4, 1968, through the Treaty of Manila. Filipinos originally celebrated Independence Day on July 4, the same date as Independence Day in the U.S. In 1962, President Diosdado Macapagal changed the date to June 12 to commemorate the end of Spanish rule in the country. This year marks 123 years of the Philippines’ independence from Spanish rule. In 2020, many Filipinos celebrated Independence Day online because of social distancing restrictions. -

Jose Rizal by: Marilou Diaz Abaya Film Review First, this movie is rated SPG. There are graphic depictions of violence and even torture. The opening few scenes depict some episodes from Rizal's novels. In one a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. I guess I now know where the Mestizo (i.e., mixed blood) class came from in the Philippines. In the other scene a Catholic priest beats a child for alleged stealing. Strong thing, and it made me wonder how the Catholic Church could possibly retain any power in the country, if this is what the national hero thought about it. The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels (filmed in black and white), so we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal. The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a flashing indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. We see scenes both from Rizal's actual life but also from his imagination The movie focuses on the condition of the society and also to the government at the time of the Spanish Colonization. -

The 9th annual show was scheduled for April 5, 2020. Due to the limitations of stagecraft, implications of COVID-19, and shelter-in-place orders, the scriptwriters made executive decisions on what to omit or adapt to create a well-rounded script. -

Questioning the Status of Rizal's Women in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo Paulette M. Coulter University of Guam Abstract To an arguable extent, the novels of José Maria Rizal are European novels of the Belle Epoque, despite their setting., and, as such, they reflect the attitude toward women current in Europe in that era. In his novels Rizal’s female characters appear more as stereotypes than archetypes in several broad categories: the good mother (Narcisa), the virgin (Maria Clara, Juli, possibly Paulita Gomez), the harridan (the commandant's wife), the social or religious fanatic (Doña Victorina and Doña Patroncino), for example. In nearly every case in the novels and in his "Letter to the Women of Malolos," however, the individual woman is an exaggeration of an already exaggerated conception of womanhood, with its origins in the work of the Spanish friars. To an arguable extent, the novels of José Maria Rizal are European novels of the Belle Epoque, the golden age at the end of nineteenth century in Europe although their setting is the Philippines, and, as a result, they reflect the attitude toward women current in Europe in that era. Rizal was influenced by both the French novelists Alexandre Dumas, père, and Émile Zola as well as by the European high culture of his time, and his novels rank with theirs in terms of the large numbers of characters, detailed descriptions of the minutiae of everyday life, and complexity of interrelationships of characters in carrying out the plot. Rizal's novels also reflect the ideas of his times on the status and development of women. -

Of course Jose Rizal is a given as the national hero. And then there’s Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo, and Emilio Jacinto. Perhaps even throw in Antonio Luna thanks to successful historical film “Heneral Luna” (2015). The Philippines does not have an official list of national heroes. While there has been an attempt to come up with one, legislators deferred finalizing a list to avoid a deluge of proclamations and debates “involving historical controversies about heroes.” Still, textbooks and flashcards don’t hesitate to ingrain their names in our minds. It’s interesting how these historical figures all breed the same familiarity as superheroes, with students already knowing their names and achievements by heart by the time they reach high school. Thinking about the personalities, you can’t help but notice a pattern: they’re mostly men who fit into the typical hero mold of machismo and valor. While history books often devote entire chapters to the adventures and achievements of male heroes, our female heroines are often bunched into one section, treated as footnotes or afterthoughts despite also fighting for the nation’s freedom. In time for Independence Day, CNN Philippines Life lists five brave Filipino heroines whose actions deserve to be remembered. These women are more than just tokens for female representation. -

Official name of Philippines is Republika ng Pilipinas (Republic of the Philippines) The Philippines consists of 7,107 islands that are categorized broadly under three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Its capital city is Manila while its most populous city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila. To the north of the Philippines across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan; Vietnam sits west across the South China Sea; southwest is the island of Borneo across the Sulu Sea, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; while to the east it is bounded by the Philippine Sea and the island-nation of Palau. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831 sq mi), the Philippines is the 64th-largest country in the world. The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate that is usually hot and humid. There are three seasons: tag-init or tag-araw, the hot dry season or summer from March to May; tag-ulan, the rainy season from June to November; and tag-lamig, the cool dry season from December to February. The southwest monsoon (from May to October) is known as the Habagat, and the dry winds of the northeast monsoon (from November to April), the Amihan. -

BAB IV SEJARAH HUBUNGAN BILATERAL FILIPINA-AMERIKA SERIKAT Setiap negara memiliki sejarah dengan dinamika tersendiri yang dapat menjadi dasar bagi arah perkembangan negara tersebut. Kolonisasi dan penjajahan misalnya, dapat menjadi faktor pembentuk nasionalisme atau bahkan ideologi sebuah negara. Republik Filipina merupakan sebuah negara yang selama lebih dari tiga ratus tahun berada di bawah jajahan bangsa asing, dari Spanyol hingga Amerika Serikat. Sejak tahun 1898, Filipina beralih dari masa jajahan Spanyol ke AS. Namun berbeda dengan Spanyol, hubungan Filipina dengan AS memiliki hubungan bilateral yang menarik pada masa penjajahan bahkan pasca kemerdekaan hingga saat ini. Meskipun hubungan kedua negara tidak serta merta berjalan mulus, namun kedua negara juga telah banyak terlibat dalam berbagai kerja sama dan perjanjian dalam bidang ekonomi & perdagangan maupun politik keamanan. Flores The criticism of Alice Guillermo presents an instance in which the encounter of the work of art resists a series of possible alienations even as it profoundly acknowledges the integrity of distinct form. The critic in this situation attentively dwells on the material of this form so that she may be able to explicate the ecology and the sociality without which it cannot concretize. The work of art, therefore, becomes the work of the world, extensively and deeply conceived. Such present-ness is vital as the critic faces the work in the world and tries to ramify that world beyond what is before her. This is one alienation that is calibrated. The work of art transpiring in the world becomes the work of the critic who lets it matter in language, freights it and leavens it with presence so that human potential unerringly turns plastic, or better still, animate: Against the cold stone, tomblike and silent, are the living glances, supplicating, questioning, challenging, or speaking—the eyes quick with feeling or the movements of thought, the mouths delicately shaping speech, the expressive gestures, and the bodies in their postures determined by the conditions of work and social circumstance. -
