Matchday 37 Serie A TIM 2020-21 15 - 17 May 2021 15/05/2021 15:00 - LUIGI FERRARIS GENOA Vs ATALANTA Atalanta have lost just one of their last 10 Serie A TIM matches against Genoa (3-1 in December 2018), earning seven wins and two draws in this period. After a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture, Genoa could remain unbeaten in both league matches in a season against Atalanta for the first time since 2014/15 (2-2 in the first fixture and 4-1 in the second), when Gian Piero Gasperini was the Nerazzurri coach. Atalanta have won four of their last five Serie A TIM away games against Genoa (L1), as many as they had in their previous 31 away league matches at Genoa in the competition beforehand. Since Davide Ballardini joined Genoa (21st December, 2020), the Rossoblu have picked up 32 points in 23 league games; they would be ninth in Serie A TIM table in this timeframe, with just one fewer point than Sassuolo and two behind Roma. In 2021, Atalanta have picked up 53 points in Serie A TIM (W16 D5 L2); only Inter (55) have earned more this calendar year so far. Atalanta have won 10 Serie A TIM games away from home this campaign, and could equal their record of league away wins in a single top-flight season (11 in Serie A TIM in 2019/20). Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini began his Serie A TIM managerial career with Genoa in August 2007. Indeed, the Rossoblu are the team with which he has taken charge of in the most games (232) as a manager in the competition.

I have just taken over from Gerhard Aigner as the CEO of UEFA. It is one of the most interesting jobs in football and, together with my colleagues, I will continue building on the founda- tions laid down by Mr Aigner in serving European football in the best possible way. The new format of the UEFA Champions League has been a success. After an interesting group stage we are now entering the knock-out stage, with some very exciting matches on the pro- gramme. We are just finalising the fine- tuning of the new format for the UEFA Cup, so as to be prepared for an interesting start to next season. The most challenging and important project in European club football in recent years is now under implementation. I am referring to the UEFA club licensing system which comes into force for qualification next season. All member associations and leagues are taking part in developing club football towards better finances and infrastructure which will safeguard the future of our game.

  • UEFA: a Successful Pan-European Organization During the Cold War
Athens Journal of Sports - Volume 7, Issue 1, March 2020 – Pages 55-76 UEFA: A Successful Pan-European Organization during the Cold War By Ana Bela Nunes* & Nuno Valério± The purpose of this paper is to analyse the formation of the Union Européenne de Football / European Football Association (UEFA) in the mid-1950s and its evolution during the period of the cold war. Post-World War II Europe was characterized for its division into two zones from an economic and political point of view. Countries from the two zones met in international organizations at the world level and created separate specifically European organizations for cooperation in several economic, political and cultural fields. However, there was an almost complete absence of specifically pan-European organizations bringing together countries from the two zones. The only significant exception was UEFA, which, from the mid-1950s onwards, succeeded in organizing regular football competitions between national and club teams from the whole continent without any significant problems, regardless of the different economic and political systems. This paper will discuss the reasons for such a remarkable achievement. Keywords: UEFA, Europe, cold war, economic and political systems, cooperation Introduction Post-World War II Europe was characterized for its division into two zones from an economic and political point of view. On one side were countries with market economies and democratic or right-wing authoritarian political regimes. On the other side were countries with centrally planned economies and communist political regimes. From the economic point of view, the division was completed in 1948, when the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) and the Council for Mutual Economic Cooperation (COMECON) were formed.

Napoli have won each of their last three away games against Spezia across Serie B and the Coppa Italia, by an aggregate scoreline of 6-1. The last match in Liguria between these two sides came back in September 2006: the Partenopei won 1-0 in Serie B thanks to a Paolo Cannavaro goal. Spezia are unbeaten in their last six home league games (W3 D3), the last newly promoted team to register a longer unbeaten home streak in a single Serie A TIM season was Palermo in March 2015 (10). Napoli have scored in each of their last 22 league games, only in 1975 (24) have they netted in more consecutive matches in their Serie A TIM history. Napoli haven’t conceded goal in four of their last five away league games (W4 L1), including the two most recent; the last time they kept three clean sheets in a row on the road in Serie A TIM was back in February 2019.
