(1984) Directed by Billie G. Oakland, Ph.D. 148 pp. This study made a comparison between anthropometric body measurements of Caucasian and Oriental females for the purpose of establishing a sizing range for apparel. Anthropometric measurements were compared using a selected sample of 100 Oriental women and 970 Caucasian women. The Oriental data were collected during the spring, 1981, in Japan, while the Caucasian data were collected from November 1976 to February, 1977, in the United States by the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army. Significant differences were found between the Oriental female and the Caucasian female body measurements on 32 variables of height-related measurements, surface measure­ ments, and circumferences. The Caucasian measurements were significantly larger than the Oriental measurements at the .001 level, except for the head, neck, wrist, and hand cir­ cumferences which were significantly smaller. The standard deviations indicated greater variations for the Caucasians than for the Orientals in all three categories of measure­ ment. The greatest amount of variability was noted in the height-related measurements. This comparison between Oriental women and Caucasian women's body measurements addressed an important research consideration in anthropometric sizing development and body variations by ethnic group. Such information is important to manufacturers who produce garments for export or who import garments made by Oriental sizing systems. Apparel patterns vary among nations and populations, due to variations in bone structure as well as cultural dif­ ferences. Joel Conkle1 and Reynaldo Martorell1,2 1Nutrition and Health Sciences Program, Laney Graduate School, and 2Hubert Department of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, GA ABSTRACT The continued use of basic, manual anthropometric tools (e.g., boards and tapes) leaves anthropometry susceptible to human error. A potential solution, 3-dimensional (3D) imaging systems for anthropometry, has been around since the 1950s. In the 1980s, 3D imaging technology advanced from photographs to the use of lasers for body digitization; and by the 2000s, the falling price of 3D scanners made commercial application feasible. The garment sector quickly adopted imaging technology for surveys because of the need for numerous measurements and large sample sizes. In the health sector, 3D imaging for anthropometry was not widely adopted; its use was limited to research and specialized purposes. The different cost and logistical requirements for measurement in the garment and health sectors help to explain why the technology was adopted in one sector and not the other. Despite reductions, the price of 3D imaging systems remained a barrier to the use of 3D imaging for regular nutritional assessment in the health sector. Additional barriers in the health sector were that imaging systems required dedicated space and were not designed for capturing measurements in young children. In recent years, the development of light-coding technology may have removed these barriers, and a handheld imaging system was developed specifically for young children. There are not yet recommendations to replace manual equipment with 3D imaging for nutritional assessment, and there is a need for more research on low-cost, handheld imaging systems—particularly research that evaluates the ability of 3D imaging to improve the quality of anthropometric data and indicators.

Two sets of visual materials make up its core sources: the Miao album, a genre of ethnographic illustration depicting the daily lives of non-Han peoples in late imperial China, and the ethnographic photographs found in popular Republican-era periodicals. Truck drivers are common victims of musculoskeletal disorders, frequently suffering from pain symptoms particularly in the neck, shoulder and lower back. This situation is believed to be a contributor to the high absenteeism in this job category. A high percentage of this problem is due to the adoption of an unhealthy driving posture resulting from inappropriate seat design. This incorrect and poor design is owing to the insufficient and obsolete anthropometrical data which has been used for decades for arranging and positioning components in the driver environment. The main objective of the present study was to create and construct a mathematical model which clarifies and predicts the drivers’ comfortable sitting posture and position. It was hypothesized that the length and height characteristics of some body segments as well as the body weight and waist circumference of the driver have a great impact on the selection of a specific sitting posture.

ABSTRACT The identification of victims involved in mass fatality incidents, as well as the identification of unknown individuals in criminal cases has become an increasingly important issue nowadays. Sex assessment represents a key point in forensic evaluations due to its significance in providing biological identity. Even though the availability of documented skeletal remains to forensic practitioners is a common practice in many countries, in Turkey, contemporary documented skeletal remains are not available for this purpose. For this reason, studies have been focused on living populations. Previous research has shown that modern technologies such as CT scanning present very promising potential in establishing new standards for contemporary populations. Therefore, the main aim of this project was to examine the application of the measurements taken from 3D CT images of the femur in order to assess sex, and to contribute to the establishment of discriminant function equations for the Turkish population for forensic applications. The accuracy and reproducibility of imaging methods in the assessment of the measurements taken from femora are essential when estimating sex.
