Marston Eleanor at the 1954 show MARSTON AYRSHIRES Arthur Court's award-winning cows Arthur Court - who farmed at Marston Lane, Frome - saw his MARSTON herd take three top prizes at the National Dairy Show with Marston Eleanor and Marston Scintillation in 1954. He stopped farming in the 1980's, but we all still remember his love for these cows and the pride we had as children seeing them on show. We want to rebuild the MARSTON herd at our new family farm - Knoll Farm, Bath - so if you can help us track down the progeny of the MARSTON herd, get in touch today.

It was decided that we needed to look into this more and with the help of AHDB formulate the strategy for the next decade.

Photographic Competition Once again, we had a great entry with 120 photos forward, with the quality again being of the highest standard. If you read on in the journal you will see the results. Iida ~ At my parent’s farm which is located in southern Finland, Lachlan ~ I wanted to see the latest genetics and to see and how they we have 30 milking cows, both Ayrshires and Holsteins. At performed and to see how the Ayrshire cow performed in different home I help with all dairy farm works and I also take care of farming practices. Also to meet Ayrshire breeders. the breeding with our amazing processing adviser Heidi from Julie ~ I wanted to make new connections/contacts as well as learn Semex Finland. I have been interested about cows, breeding & more about UK genetics and how it differs from Canadian genetics. feeding them my whole life. Corey ~ What I wanted to achieve was a better understanding on Olivia ~ I work on a farm with 250 milking cows (Holsteins), Ayrshire Genetics around the world. and on the weekends I go home and work at my parents’ farm with 70 milking cows. At my parents farm we have 90% red cows (Swedish red/Swedish Ayrshire) and the other 10% are Did you achieve it? some Holstein and some Jersey crosses. Iida ~ Yes, I really did. I can’t even imagine, how well. I learned a Gabrielle ~ General dog’s body, farm assistant on 150ha milking lot, I saw a lot and I created new amazing friendships! I got lots 360 cows at peak. of experience and life-lasting memories. And yes, showmanship Lachlan ~ Dairy farmer milking 300 cows on 600 acres. competition second place exceeded all my hopes and expectations. Julie ~ Genetic consultant for Ciaq in Quebec. My family farm is Olivia Yes I did :) Now I also have friends all over the world :) milking around 80 Ayrshires. Gabrielle~ I’ve caught up with a few people I had met while in the UK Corey ~ Help out with the family farm. when I was in Australia for the world conference. Lachlan ~ Yes, I saw progeny from some of the latest UK bulls How did you get chosen to represent your country/ available and saw cows from bulls that I have started to use. It was association? great to see how the Ayrshire cows fitted into any of the UK dairy practices. It was great to meet up with many UK Ayrshire breeders Iida ~ I’m a youth team member of the Finnish Ayrshire and the youth and to see their passion for the breed. To also meet the Breeders association. I was the only member who was eighteen other tour delegates from around the world who I have made lasting and eligible. friendship with. Olivia ~ I saw in our SRB magazine an article about this trip and Julie ~ Yes absolutely!! I have made so many friends from around to attend you had to send in your interest, so I did. I wrote a little the world through this trip. I also was able to learn more about what about myself and why I wanted to go on this trip and then the genetics/ bulls are being used in the UK compared to in Canada. SRB council picked out which one should go. Corey ~ I feel as if I accomplished what I wanted to achieve on this Gabrielle ~ I wrote a letter describing myself, sent it in and tour. ended with an interview, I got a call while the NZ conference was on notifying me that I was going to be the one to represent our country. What would you say are the noticeable difference between Ayrshires in the UK and your country? Lachlan ~ Applied to Australian Ayrshires. Iida ~ I think the biggest difference between Ayrshires in Finland and Julie ~ I had to write a letter why I wanted to attend this trip. Ayrshires in UK is the level of conformation. In Finland it is getting Then Ayrshire Canada chose from the list of people interested higher all the time, but in UK it’s really high even now on many farms. the person they felt would get the most out of the trip. And that’s why cows herd life average is also higher, I guess. I think Corey ~ I got chosen by Becky Payne to come on the tour. in Finland Ayrshire cows however have a bit better production per lactation. That is my estimate and sure I mean averages. Maybe it What did you want to achieve from the trip? depends about feeding. Iida ~ I wanted to learn more about Ayrshire cows and see local Olivia ~ If I compare to the SRB or Ayrshires in Sweden with the ways to do things at farms. I hoped that I can create connections Ayrshires in the UK, I would say our cows are more compact and not with other youth delegates and local people. I wanted to collect so tall as we saw at some farms. more valuable experience and memories. I also hoped that I can Gabrielle ~ The Ayrshires in the UK all had tremendous fore udders do showmanship competition well. while the ones in NZ typically have a better rear udder. Other than Olivia ~ Learn more about the Ayrshire cow and to meet new that, they are fairly similar. people that also are into cows and . Lachlan ~ I feel like you have been true to the Ayrshire breed in Gabrielle ~ I wanted to meet new people and create connections Australia we have started to put in red Holstein and have lost some of on the other side of the world. I also wanted to compare the good traits of the breed. Saying this we have some amazing Ayrshire 12 The Ayrshire Journal In this edition we asked the World Federation youth representatives to give some feedback on their experience of the tour we hosted in October.

It was a well spent day though I feel like are with US Ayrshires when we breed for type we hanging with some of the youth from the Cumbria Club. will give up some production to get a heifer that will be extremely Lachlan~ There is so many that it is truly hard to pick one I was stylish, but in the UK they want their Ayrshires to look good but greatly humbled to be even chosen to be the Australian delegate they still want their show heifers to have really good production. to go to the UK. It was my first time going overseas and to be able to meet and go to so many farms that had a love for Ayrshire Describe your experience of competing at the UK national cattle was wonderful to see. To make lasting friendships with the Ayrshire calf show: other delegates has been great. I just loved the road trips with Alan Timbrell as our tour guide, he was amazing and his love and Iida ~ It was a great experience and I was very happy about my knowledge of the breed. Also seeing some amazing cows and good success. I’m very thankful for Sandyford Ayrshire for a meeting new people. wonderful heifer. I saw in the show many very correct heifers, and the level of conformation was really amazing there. It was Julie ~ My favourite memory was at the calf show. From doing really great to see same people at the show, whose herds we had visited well in showmanship against a lot of other strong competitors to earlier on the trip! And sure, there I met also many new lovely meeting everyone there and just having a great time. people. Corey ~ My favourite memory on the trip, there are so many of Olivia ~ It was fun to be a part of and a great experience, Sweden them but my favourite memory is probably when we all pulled a doesn’t have so many shows which is sad, but it’s probably little prank on Alan Timbrell because he was always talking about because farmers in Sweden are afraid to get diseases from other all the pranks he use to play on people so all of us delegates farms, but it is also because the interest in showing isn’t that big. decided we needed to play one on him! I learned a lot of new things to do when showing and it was fun to see the efforts at the show. The first three words that come to mind when you think Gabrielle ~ The standard is very different to NZ, down here we about the experience: are a little bit more chilled out, but it was a good experience nonetheless. Iida ~ Lovely new friends, great Ayrshire cows and amazing memories Lachlan ~ It was a great honour to be able to go to the calf show and to see how it was run and to see so many young people Olivia ~ Fun, Memorable, Amazing involved in the show. I would also like to thank the farmer for Gabrielle~ It was great. providing the great heifer that was made available for me to be able to show. Also, to thank Jake for preparing it for me to show. Lachlan ~ AMAZING, Thankful, Grateful Julie ~ I really enjoyed the calf show. Being able to work with a Julie~ Best trip ever. great calf, preparing her and then competing against other great Corey~ Perfect, unforgettable, and tremendous! showmen/women. I loved it. Corey~ Competing in the calf show was the highlight of the trip! Going to shows and showing is one of my favourite things to do, and then it also helps when the one you are handed to show wins reserve champion on the day. Have to thank Jake Sayer for allowing me the opportunity.

Favourite memory: Iida ~ My favourite memory was ABAB show, because my dreams come true in showmanship ring (First time outside of Finland, when I did that well!)And sure, I have to bring up amazing pig racing night and Lake District adventure with amazing guys, never forget! Olivia ~ It’s hard to pick one...The whole trip is my favourite memory. The days we spent at the calf show, it was so fun to see all the efforts people in your country have in these calf shows, I wish it was so big in Sweden. We were all made so welcome and the people that we met was so kind and friendly and involved us 13 The Ayrshire Journal 13 The Ayrshire Journal Advertising Once-a-Day feeding lays foundation to calf health in premier herd

Six decades of FAMIILY dedicated breeding FOCUS by a master breeder brought this family of cows to its pinnacle, on the 31st January 2020, when Hunnington Fragy 12 was classified EX97 7E. Although Chris Window passed away some three years ago his legacy lives on in his cows and his family. Fragy 12 was always a cow that Chris felt had a great future right from when she was born - on the 4th of September 2005 - and then when Hunnington Fragy 4 EX94 3E she calved in as a heifer he knew he had a real star, as she scored VG 88 as a first calved heifer.

It all started in 1955 when Chris began working at Lord Plumb’s Southfield herd near Coleshill, Birmingham. From the start Chris warmed to the Fragrance family (as they were then known) because of their nature and will to milk. After sixteen years of working for Lord Plumb, Chris and Hazel got the chance to farm in their own right, and they purchased a number of heifers for the nucleus of his Hunnington herd from Southfield. Lord Plumb remarked that Chris was quite insistent that he had Southfield Fragrance 26 (a Flodder Hall High Spirit daughter) as one of the purchases, but in Lord Plumb’s words she wasn’t the best-looking heifer of the group, but Chris wanted her.

chris window with Hunnington Fragy Her first daughter was Hunnington Fragrance, sired by the royal show 1999 sire of the period Pant Outlaw, a Pant Dictator son, Chris decided to line breed Fragrance to her sire Pant Outlaw, producing Hunnington Fragrance 3 EX who produced over 80,000kgs lifetime and two Excellent daughters, Hunnington Fragrance 7 by Townhead Diadem and Hunnington Fragy by Brocklehill Happy Spirit, and this is where the family splits apart, with the Diadem line staying as Fragrance and the Happy Spirit line take the name Fragy. Hunnington Fragy was Chris’s favourite cow of all time, as most breeders accept there is always one cow that they call special and this was it. Fragy was a powerhouse, you could drive a bus through her front legs. She was no slouch in the show ring winning many prizes including first prize 50-ton class at the Royal show 1999 and she was a top production animal too, with a lifetime yield of over 80,000kgs in nine lactations. She bred two EX daughters, one by Langside Impact, but her most notable Hunnington Fragy 16 EX95 3E daughter was Hunnington Fragy 4 EX94 3E.

30 The Ayrshire Journal Fragy 4 was by Brocklehill Harvest Gold (a Pant Blue Lagoon son out of Pant Sea Breeze EX) and she bred three Excellent daughters, Fragy 12 and Fragy 15 by Hunnington BBK Easlad and Fragy 13 by Rosehill Blackthorn. She also had one VG son by Blackadder BB Kellogg used in the Beeline Herd and an EX McCornick Nelson son used in the Blackrock herd. Fragy 4 was also no stranger to the show circuit in the UK and had many successful days in the ring, winning many Breed Championships and Supreme Championships and she produced over 90,000kgs of milk lifetime in eleven lactations.

Hunnington Fragy 12 EX97 7E is the oldest living daughter of Fragy 4 and she has followed in her mother’s footsteps. Sired by Hunnington Fragy 12 EX97 7E the Blackadder BB Kellogg son Hunnington the uk’s highest classified ayrshire BBK Easlad who is out of a cow (Pylon Easled EX95 6E by Brieryside Superman) that Chris purchased at the Society Conference sale of 1998. According to Lisa, her Dad said Easled was almost identical to the original Fragy in so many ways and he felt that BBK Easlad would leave him something special, and how right he was.

Fragy 12 has left her mark in the show ring, winning many prizes, and has produced over 80,000kgs lifetime to date. She has bred three daughters, the oldest, Fragy 16 EX95 3E, is the dam of Hunnington Tornado Fragy VG88 who was Honourable Mention at our National Show 2019, and Fragy 24 by Rosehill Prestige is yet to be classified. Her two-year-old Fragy 29 will calve in a few months, she is by Hunnington Jester, a son of the great Joybell family - but that’s a story for another day. Fragy 12 has three sons, one is being used in the well- known Plaskett herd, Hunnington Flash EX92 by Castern Tornado, Hunnington Famous EX94, a De La Plaine Prime son, one of the most heavily used AI sires over the last few years, whose daughters are calving out very well. Hunnington Tornado Fragy VG88 Her latest son who is causing excitement within the breed is Hunnington Fantasy by Sandyford Supreme, semen will be drawn from him later this year. As you can see from her photos Fragy 12 still looks so youthful at 14 ½ years old and is now to be put on a flush program in the coming months.

In Lisa’s words “Fragy is a wonderful cow to work with, a real character, cows like this come along once in a lifetime if you’re lucky! it’s a privilege to work with Fragy and her family and its thanks to Dad’s hard work, commitment and passion for the Breed that I am able to do so”. Chris Window was without a doubt a master breeder who strived for excellence in everything he did, and he would have loved to be still around to see his lifetimes work reach this pinnacle. This wonderful cow also has a deep pedigree going back to three star brood cow, Myerscough Jess 123 EX. 37 The Ayrshire Journal 38 The Ayrshire Journal 39 The Ayrshire Journal 40 The Ayrshire Journal 41 The Ayrshire Journal 42 The Ayrshire Journal 43 The Ayrshire Journal On Tuesday the 12th May the Howie fam- ily, Michael, Angie, Will, Peter & Ben extend a warm welcome to dele- gates of the Ayrshire Cattle Society for day two of the 2020 Ayrshire Morwick Conference at Morwick. The Howie family have farmed at Morwick for 75 years, at present three generations are active on the farm, father, David, still turns up at 6am every morning, not bad for a 90 year old.

In 1926 grandfather, Allan Howie, moved south from his family farm in Ayrshire. He set- tled at Eshott Brocks, near Felton, and farmed Ayrshires under the Brocks prefix. Nineteen years later, in 1945, the family moved five miles east to Morwick, a 560 acre Duke of Northum- berland farm. The Brocks cows were sold and the young stock was used to start a new Ayrshire herd under the Morwick prefix.

Today the farm 200 cows, a mixture of Ayrshires, Ayrshire hybrids, Red & White Holsteins, a few Jerseys and black and whites. The farmed area is approximately 950 acres, 600 arable and 350 grass. The herd are housed for six months of the year and TMR fed, with no concentrates fed in the parlour. In the grazing season, mid-April to mid-October, the cows are outside full time and receive TMR after each milking. The herd is averaging 9000 litres at 4.35 butterfat and 3.45 protein with a calving index of 405. Milk is sold to Arla under the Arla 360 scheme.

The ice cream parlour opened in 2003 and has become a successful farm diversification. The idea behind Morwick Dairy Ice Cream is to provide a fresh, quality product that can be sold direct to the public. An ice cream trailer attends local shows and events and will be situated in Alnwick Castle during the summer. An ice cream counter and bike attends weddings and receptions. Ice cream is also supplied to local coffee shops in individual tubs. Raw milk has been sold for four years, and more recently a raw milk vending machine has been installed. An Education Room to host school visits allows pupils to see for themselves how a modern dairy farm works, and more specifically where ice cream hails from - the milk’s journey of 20 metres from cow to cone.

Cow families to look out for include the Brown Girls, Tulips, Ruths, Peggys, Kirstys and the Fawns, the stand out cow family are the Queens, who can be traced back nearly 80 years. Winning the Royal and the Highland interbreeds in 2002 with Morwick Sand Queen EX96 was a very proud moment.

At present sexed semen is predominantly used, with Belgium Blue used on the bottom end. Service sires include Lyner Oblique Focus, Pam Ayrs Hawaiian, Biddesden Hector, Swaites Dermott and Pie X Yellow. Conventional semen includes Gwynnog Primetime and Troutbeck Skyfall. On the Tuesday morning we will be hosting a Judging Seminar from 10:00am until lunch time, non- Conference delegates will be most welcome to attend. CONFERENCE 2020

Park Farm extends to an area in excess of 3000 acres encompassing predomi- nantly permanent pasture, intersected by woodland on the banks of the River Aln. The majority of the land is within the walled boundary of Hulne Park, an Park Farmsarea located to the front of Alnwick Castle forming part of the landscape de- signed by Capability Brown.

Park Farm is the centre of the estate’s enterprise, with the current farm- house and steading dating back to the 1820s. For many years the estate ran the renowned herd of Alnwick Castle Dairy , which won both national and international acclaim, with bulls being exported as far as Argentina, South Africa and many parts of Europe. Today, Park Farm runs a flock of 1450 ewes and 42 suckler cows, managed by one full time farm manager.

Prior to the building of the current Park Farm, a site on the edge of Alnwick known as the Duchess’s Dairy was estab- lished in 1920, which housed a herd of Ayrshire cows and signalled the family’s great interest in developing their own ‘home farm’.

In addition to farming, Park Farm works hand in hand with other enterprises such as forestry, sporting, and 44 nature conservation, and also providesThe several Ayrshire miles Journal of permissive public access. The Marleycote herd of pedigree Dairy Short- horns dates back more than 90 years. The dairy herd was established in Morwick Marleycote 1932 by the late Geof- frey Baynes and is now managed by his grandson Richard assisted by Lewis Short. The herd comprises of 20 Dairy and 90 Ayrshire cows and their dairy replacements, alongside bull . Marleycote Walls runs to 165 acres, along with nearby Woodnook Farm of 120 acres. Cropping is mainly grass with 40 acres barley and 20 acres wheat for whole crop silage. Although breeding the right type of cow is more important than her blended percentage, the show ring plays an important part in the breeding decisions, so if possible the aim is to keep the percentage over 50%. The aim across the herd is for a cow to last seven to eight lactations with an average yield of 8000 litres whilst getting straight back in calf with minimal health problems. The herd is nationally renowned for quality and over the years has an impressive show record at the country’s top agricultural shows, including Northumberland County, The Royal Highland and Dairy Event. Cattle from the Marleycote herd are also regular and successful competitors at the North East All Breeds Dairy Calf Show and the All Breeds All Britain Calf Show. The Great Yorkshire Show remains the family’s favorite show, successes there include: • 2011 Marleycote Barrington Iris winning Shorthorn Champion and Reserve Interbreed Champion. • 2012 Morwick Fawn added to her long list of show successes with the Ayrshire Championship. • 2012 Marleycote Apricot VG86 Heifer Champion and Marleycote Sea Lily 21 VG87 was awarded reserve Ayrshire Champion. • Marleycote Songstress 20 VG86 was heifer Champion and Reserve overall in the Shorthorn classes. • 2015 Marleycote Brown Nell 20 EX93 took the Ayrshire breed Champion at the South West of Scotland Dairy Show. A sale of note during 2013 was the Ayrshire - Marleycote Sea Lily 14 - and the Shorthorn - Marleycote Princess Jill 31 - selling to the Mclean family in Northern Ireland, both cows have won many breed and interbreed championships with Lily scoring EX94 and Jill EX95. We currently sell 70% of the milk which our cows produce, in bottles. Milk is delivered to over 150 customers throughout Northum- berland and Tyneside. Customers include shops, coffee shops, restaurants, ice cream makers and bakeries. The latest innovation is the placing of the first milk vending machine in a suburb of Newcastle. This is proving very popular with the customers and is selling considerable volumes of milk. In 2009 the Baynes family decided to invest in two Lely Astronaut robots, along with a new purpose-built shed. This was designed with cow comfort and ease of management in mind. There are 124 cubicles, a slatted floor with eight months slurry storage be- neath and a straw yard for up to 20 cows. The cows are fed a simple diet of grass silage, wholecrop wheat and brewer’s grains in winter with an 18% nut in the robots. They are grazed through the summer and buffer fed silage. Current Classifications: 17EX, 34VG, 30GP and 10G. CONFERENCE 2020 Rigg & Furrow Rigg & Furrow is an authentic farmhouse brewery based at Acklington Park Farm in Northumberland. Giving a new lease of life to our old milking parlour we create new takes on Farmhouse beers - beers originally brewed for thirsty farm workers during the summer months. 45 The Ayrshire Journal RUAS Winter Fair The first class of the day was the Maiden heifer class and this went to Beechmount Marie Girl 23 by Marbrae Bigtime from Robert McConnell, she is no stranger to the show ring as she was first in her class at the National Ayrshire calf show earlier in 2019. Second was Priestland PRG Sea Lily by Palmyra Reality Gibbs from the McLean family and third was Fortfield Caroline by Ravenhill Victory from Raymond Stewart. Next class in the ring was the Cow in calf class, and again a strong entry, with Fortfield Kate 43 by Brocklehill Major (a twelve-year-old) winning out over her younger competitors. Second was Grove Chrysanthemum 17 by West Mossgiel Modern Reality from Thomas Gordon and third was Robert McConnell with Beechmount Hester 11 by Ravenhill Steadfast. The Heifer in milk class was the biggest class of the day, and there was great quality all the way through. First in this hotly contested class was Threemile Mist Trident by Ardmore Olympic Trident from Christian Keenan and family, who had travelled up from south of the border with a string of Ayrshires. In second was Beechmount Ethel 16 by Ravenhill Stormin Norman from Robert McConnell, and third was Ardmore Janet 136 by Sandyford Supreme from John & Michael Hunter. In the second calver class the top three were very hard to split but the eventual Champion RUAS Sandyford Lucky Honey winner was Threemile Bella by Haresfoot Elegant, again from the Keenan family, with second going to John & Michael Hunter with Ardmore Janet 134 by Hunnington Mandella, and third was Martin King and family with Kirkinriola GR Sunrise by Grove Ritchie. The next class, the senior milk cows saw the big guns in the ring with two cows shown that had previously taken breed champion at the show, Ardmore Janet 136 by Sandyford Supreme and Sandyford Honesty Blizzard by Heydale Blizzard, both from John & Michael Hunter, who had to settle for second and third respectfully to the winner Sandyford Lucky Honey, by Sandyford Lucky Charm, from the McLean family. When it came to the Championship it was a fantastic spectacle in the ring and Aussie judge Rob Anderson tapped out his senior milk cow, Sandyford Lucky Honey, for his Champion and Reserve was Threemile Bella, who was also the exhibitor bred champion. WINTER SHOWS 2019/2020 UK Dairy Expo 2020 Although numbers were back on last year the quality was exceptionally high. In the first calf class it was the youngest calf that won, Halmyre Urr Blossom by Swaites Dermott, ably shown by Isla Davidson at only 3 ½ years old who has a great showing future ahead of her following in her parents Colin and Nicola Davidson’s footsteps. This calf was tapped out as reserve Champion with the Champion being Sandyford Famed Clover jointly owned by M & A Howie & E T Tomlinson, this Hunnington Famous daughter was first in its class with second place going to Changue Maybelle 167 by Changue Cadell from GG Baynes & Son.

In the milking section the heifer in milk, went to M & A Howie with Morwick Kirsty 13(Duo Star Gentleman) and second was Jamara Evolution Sara from JE & SM Seedall. In the 3yr old class it was Sandyford Triclo Diamond (Sandyford Triclo) taking the honours over Champion Group another Triclo daughter Jamara Triclo Heather Honey from JE & SM Seedall. The 4yr old class saw our champion and reserve enter the ring with Sandyford Prime Heather Honey (De La Plaine Prime) from Beth Granville and E T Tomlinson who was also Champion at this event last year taking the class over Allstar Provider Honesty from Evie Tomlinson, E T Tomlinson and Ifan Wilson. Sandyford Dark Hester (Sandyford Dark Knight) took the 5yr old class and the Honourable mention title and second in the class to her was East Church Brazilian Blossom 2 from Colin & Nicola Davidson who was also the reserve champion calves dam. In summary a really good show of quality Ayrshire animals.

To round the day off for the Tomlinson family Blaise Tomlinson was presented with The John Dennison Lifetime Achievement Award. The aim of this award is to recognise the breeder or exhibitor judged to be a high achiever and exemplary role model within the dairy industry. Well done Blaise you very much deserve this prestigious award.

Ulster It is hard to believe we are well into 2020 and Spring is fast approaching.

Our annual Dinner and Prizegiving seems so long ago now, but it was a great evening enjoyed by many members and friends. As usual it was held at the Adair Arms Hotel, Ballymena, and the staff provided a super meal to get us all in the festive mood!

We were delighted to welcome our Society President, Michael Howie, to the Dinner and after we had wined and dined he did have to sing for his supper, giving a most interesting talk about his life in Ayrshire cattle, and he kindly gave out the prizes won by Club members during the year. It is always a relaxed social evening away from the pressures of the show rings, and gives us an opportunity to thank our Sponsors who support us so generously during the year.

At the beginning of December we had the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society Winter Fair at Balmoral Park, and as usual there was an excellent showing of Ayrshire cattle at this event. This year the top honours went to the McLean family with their Senior cow Sandyford Lucky Honey, with Reserve Champion going to the Keenan family’s Threemile Bella. Congratulations to the McLeans and Keenans, and to all the other class winners. Competition is always very tough and rosettes are well earned.

In January we had our first Club meeting of the new decade. This was organised by our young member Amy King and comprised a talk by the local Search and Rescue team. I don’t think any of us realised how varied their work is, and it is all done on a voluntary basis. It was a most interesting talk and we were very grateful to them for giving up their valuable time, and thanks to Amy for organising such an interesting meeting.

Congratulations to Peter and Laura Drummond who in November welcomed their second son, James, a brother for William.

Sadly, Beth McEwan passed away in late February. Beth was mother of our former Club Secretary Caroline Fullerton and sister of long stand- ing member James Getty. We send our condolences and sympathy to the entire family circle.

North West The North West Ayrshire Cattle Club would like to introduce Mrs Emma Cranshaw as the new club secretary and treasurer. Emma has been a member of the club for the last four years and is married to Bobby Cran- shaw, who has been breeding and showing Ayrshire cattle for over twenty years.

The dispersal of the Saltcotes herd, for David Morris, brought a full audi- ence of supporters. With everything on offer from fourteen year old cows to recently calved heifers, a very respectable average of £930 was a good result. Top price for a fresh heifer came from James Seedall at £1800.
