2017/18 Season Review, the Good the Bad and the Ugly...

The future, what have we learnt? Changing rooms They are finished! They are beautiful. They are built to RFU regulations. It is time to celebrate the completion of the project and leave the overrun and costs behind. Things happen when building projects are undertaken. The facts are simple. We now have a building which was quoted as costing £700,000 without legal and planning fees which has cost us, as members, approximately £125,000. All the other costs were generous grants and hard work or free services. We need to thank the committee, especially Rob Dean, for delivering the project. Was it a struggle? Yes. Did it overrun? A bit! Is it As the season draws to a close I have put pen to paper to worth it? Of course. We now need to kick on, complete the reflect on a varied year at the club. refurbishment of the old rooms, sort out the driveway and get a second pitch floodlit. Do we need this and want it? Yes The Good we do. We will be applying for more grants to do it and may Girls rugby is on the up and improving every week. We have ask members to help again. It is our club, it is what we need two excellent squads of U13 & U15 year olds and a growing to do and someone has to get the money in from somewhere. number of U18s. We have appointed a new Head Of Ladies rugby in Cate Dyble who played for Saracen ladies and is Colts very passionate about Women’s rugby. A new season and a fresh start will hopefully bring the colts Ashton’s Legal kindly sponsored our division for the back together. A pre season tour has been mooted along second year. It is planned to be the last Sunday of The changing room project was always going to be ambitious the season too so not in the Easter holiday and late to allow to complete by the second month of the season but we didn’t for a better chance of decent weather. We have volunteers expect it to take almost the whole season. No showers, no to organise it but all parents of all mini ages will be asked changing and no home advantage hit all of the youth age groups. to contribute. This is a volunteer led club in the Mini and The colts had an awful season plagued with lack of Youth. All parents need to help. It is not fair that our parent availability for training and matches. One leads to another coaches get lumbered with doing all the work whilst other and eventually number dropped below the threshold to put parents do nothing. We all pay the same membership, we out a team for cup matches. Away matches seemed to take should all share the workload. its toll and commitment was poor. Enjoy your Weekends off for the next 4 months. Rest, Relax, and get ready for next season! The Ugly The weather has really defeated us this year with the rain, John Creighton, Chairman M&Y snow and pitch conditions letting us down. January was a total washout with the flooding and broken drains, the February hit us with the snow and freezing temperature. We have cancelled more games than we have played. We also had to cancel our Festival for the first time in 42 years. Not because of the weather but because very few opposition were willing to come and we were lacking in volunteers to help organise it. Touchline behaviour from parents, spectators and coaches is starting to get to disrespectful levels. Several clubs we play are not well behaved but when pointing the finger, we must also look at ourselves first. We all need to reflect on how we conduct ourselves at training and matches and lead by example. Cambridge v Fylde
