ABSTRACT:ȱTheȱrecentȱreferenceȱworkȱPriority!ȱTheȱDatingȱofȱScientificȱNamesȱinȱOrnithologyȱ containedȱ someȱerrorsȱandȱomittedȱsomeȱexplanationsȱ whichȱ wouldȱ haveȱ beenȱ useful.ȱ Explanationsȱnowȱfeltȱtoȱbeȱinsufficientȱrelateȱtoȱtheȱinterpretationȱofȱtheȱcorrectedȱdatesȱ ofȱpublicationȱofȱworks.ȱChangesȱinȱtheȱdateȱofȱaȱworkȱmayȱnotȱhaveȱaȱdirectȱeffectȱonȱ theȱ dateȱ ofȱ aȱ seeminglyȱ newȱ taxonȱ name;ȱ aȱdescriptionȱ mayȱ haveȱ appearedȱ elsewhereȱ andȱnowȱbeȱearlier;ȱorȱaȱnameȱmayȱloseȱprecedence.ȱAddingȱdetailsȱofȱsuchȱcasesȱwasȱnotȱ attempted,ȱ butȱ hereȱ examplesȱ areȱ givenȱ whichȱ illustrateȱ severalȱ waysȱ inȱ whichȱ suchȱ divergenceȱ canȱ occur.ȱ Alsoȱ includedȱ areȱ someȱ complementaryȱ datesȱ whichȱ reflectȱ anȱ I.C.Z.N.ȱOpinionȱinȱ2003ȱrelatingȱtoȱissuesȱofȱprecedenceȱbetweenȱtheȱProceedingsȱofȱtheȱ ZoologicalȱSocietyȱofȱLondonȱandȱmoreȱrapidȱreportsȱofȱtheȱSociety’sȱmeetingsȱappearingȱinȱ popularȱjournals.ȱ

INTRODUCTIONȱ Itȱisȱsadlyȱtrueȱthatȱalmostȱnoȱbookȱofȱcarefullyȱresearchedȱinformationȱisȱfound,ȱafterȱ publication,ȱ toȱ beȱ completelyȱ satisfactoryȱ toȱ itsȱ authors.ȱ “Priority!ȱ Theȱ Datingȱ ofȱ Scientificȱ NamesȱinȱOrnithology”ȱ(hereafterȱcalledȱ“Priority!”)ȱbyȱDickinsonȱetȱal.ȱ(2011)ȱwasȱsubjectedȱtoȱ thoroughȱinternalȱreviewȱandȱtoȱreferees’ȱcomments,ȱandȱhas,ȱindeed,ȱbeenȱkindlyȱreviewedȱ (Banks,ȱ2012;ȱBarclay,ȱ2012;ȱKnox,ȱ2012),ȱbutȱitȱsometimesȱconveysȱunintendedȱinformationȱ orȱfailedȱtoȱmakeȱclearȱtheȱlimitationsȱimposedȱbyȱitsȱmethodology,ȱandȱitȱdidȱincludeȱsomeȱ errors.ȱOneȱofȱusȱ(CJ)ȱhasȱworkedȱthroughȱtheȱbookȱandȱaskedȱprobingȱquestions.ȱHeȱfoundȱ aȱ varietyȱ ofȱ errors.ȱ Hereȱ weȱ addressȱ mostȱ ofȱ theȱ pointsȱ raised;ȱ theȱ rest,ȱ concerningȱ D’Orbigny’sȱ“Voyageȱdansȱl’Amériqueȱméridionale”,ȱwillȱbeȱcoveredȱinȱaȱsecondȱjointȱpaper.ȱ

PRECEDENCEȱ Inȱ“Priority!”ȱthereȱwasȱaȱtightȱfocusȱonȱtheȱworkȱandȱitsȱdateȱofȱpublication.ȱTableȱLXVIȱ wasȱderivedȱfromȱtheȱresearchȱintoȱtheseȱworks.ȱInȱtheȱIntroductionȱweȱwroteȱ“Ourȱlistsȱofȱ entriesȱdoȱnotȱprovideȱforȱtheȱoccasionalȱneedȱtoȱdetermineȱdatesȱofȱtwoȱdifferentȱworksȱandȱ stateȱ whichȱ hasȱ priority”.ȱ Thisȱ statement,ȱ whileȱ correct,ȱ underplaysȱ theȱ importanceȱ ofȱ rememberingȱtheȱneedȱforȱitȱisȱnotȱasȱrareȱasȱoneȱmightȱsuppose.ȱThusȱTableȱLXVIȱincludedȱ someȱ dateȱ changesȱ thatȱ areȱ reflectiveȱ ofȱ theȱ work,ȱ butȱ whichȱ areȱ notȱ theȱ finalȱ wordȱ asȱ regardsȱtheȱname.ȱBelowȱweȱdemonstrateȱthatȱdualȱpublicationȱofȱanȱauthor’sȱworkȱwasȱnotȱ uncommonȱ(althoughȱtheȱauthorȱmayȱnotȱhaveȱintendedȱthis).ȱInȱaȱfurtherȱsectionȱweȱdrawȱ attentionȱtoȱaȱfewȱcasesȱwhereȱtwoȱauthorsȱpublishedȱtheȱsameȱname.ȱȱ EdwardȱC.ȱDickinsonȱ&ȱColinȱJonesȱ 76ȱ ZoologicalȱBibliographyȱ2012ȱ2(2&3)ȱ

ȱ PARALLELȱPUBLICATIONȱBYȱTHEȱSAMEȱAUTHORȱ Toȱretainȱaȱclearȱlogicȱinȱtheȱmethodologyȱappliedȱinȱ“Priority!”ȱitȱwasȱdecidedȱatȱtheȱ outsetȱ thatȱ theȱ complicationȱ ofȱ parallelȱ publication,ȱ whetherȱ byȱ theȱ authorȱ alone,ȱ orȱ byȱ competingȱauthors,ȱwasȱoutsideȱtheȱscopeȱofȱtheȱbook.ȱThisȱcomplicationȱdidȱreceiveȱbriefȱ mentionȱinȱaȱfewȱcases,ȱbutȱnoȱcommentȱonȱtheȱsubjectȱappearsȱinȱtheȱintroductoryȱchaptersȱ perhapsȱ becauseȱ itȱ wasȱ feltȱ thatȱ suchȱ casesȱ deservedȱ separateȱ publicationȱ inȱ theȱ primaryȱ literature,ȱi.e.ȱinȱpeerȬreviewedȱjournals.ȱConsequentlyȱinȱ“Priority!”ȱeveryȱworkȱexaminedȱ wasȱ approachedȱ withȱ theȱ intentȱ toȱ determineȱ whetherȱ itsȱ dateȱ ofȱ publicationȱ wasȱ knownȱ withȱ certainty,ȱ orȱ someȱ degreeȱ ofȱ certainty,ȱ orȱ not.ȱ Thisȱ couldȱ easilyȱ haveȱ leftȱ theȱ readerȱ believingȱ thatȱ aȱ dateȱ ofȱ publicationȱ accepted,ȱ forȱ thatȱ work,ȱ byȱ Dickinsonȱ etȱ al.ȱ mustȱ beȱ correctȱ forȱ eachȱ newȱ scientificȱ nameȱ withinȱ it,ȱ andȱ theȱ provisionȱ ofȱ Tableȱ LXVIȱ mayȱ haveȱ strengthenedȱthatȱbelief.ȱThatȱparallelȱpublicationȱmadeȱthatȱassumptionȱdangerousȱwasȱnotȱ sufficientlyȱstressed.ȱȱ Theȱ followingȱ examplesȱ illustrateȱ theȱ needȱ toȱ checkȱ thatȱ theȱ presumedȱ dateȱ ofȱ publicationȱofȱaȱworkȱmayȱnotȱbeȱtheȱsameȱasȱtheȱdateȱofȱfirstȱvalidȱappearanceȱofȱaȱnameȱ generallyȱthoughtȱtoȱhaveȱfirstȱappearedȱinȱthatȱwork:ȱ (1) PublicationȱinȱtheȱProceedingsȱofȱtheȱZoologicalȱSocietyȱofȱLondon:ȱInȱ“Priority!”ȱtheȱeditorsȱ referredȱtoȱpublishedȱinformation,ȱsuchȱasȱthatȱofȱDuncanȱ(1937),ȱonȱtheȱtimingȱofȱtheȱ issuesȱofȱtheȱpartsȱofȱeachȱannualȱvolume.ȱForȱtheȱwork,ȱi.e.ȱeachȱpart,ȱthatȱinformationȱisȱ quiteȱ satisfactoryȱ (albeitȱ withȱ minorȱ reservations).ȱ However,ȱ forȱ anyȱ givenȱ nameȱ thatȱ dateȱmayȱnotȱbeȱdeterminativeȱbecauseȱreportsȱofȱtheȱmeetingsȱ–ȱsometimesȱincludingȱ theȱnameȱofȱaȱnewlyȱproposedȱtaxonȱandȱaȱdescription,ȱoftenȱmuchȱshortened,ȱȱappearedȱ daysȱ toȱ monthsȱ beforeȱ theȱ Proceedingsȱ inȱ Theȱ Literaryȱ Gazette,ȱ Theȱ Analyst,ȱ orȱ Theȱ Athenaeumȱorȱsimilarȱjournalsȱ(Bruceȱ&ȱMcAllan,ȱ1991).ȱThisȱparticularlyȱaffectedȱnamesȱ proposedȱbyȱJohnȱGouldȱduringȱtheȱperiodȱ1833ȱtoȱ1870.ȱȱ Theseȱauthorsȱdescribedȱ36ȱsuchȱcasesȱarguingȱforȱpriorityȱtoȱbeȱrespected.ȱThisȱwasȱ seenȱasȱdisruptive,ȱandȱtheȱInternationalȱCommissionȱforȱZoologicalȱNomenclatureȱwasȱ askedȱ byȱ Bockȱ &ȱ Schoddeȱ (1997)ȱ toȱ recogniseȱ theȱ laterȱ formalȱ descriptionsȱ inȱ theȱ Proceedings.ȱEventuallyȱtheȱI.C.Z.N.ȱ(2003)ȱinȱOpinionȱ2026ȱdeniedȱthatȱrequest,ȱstatingȱ thatȱeachȱcaseȱmustȱbeȱconsideredȱonȱitsȱmerits.ȱOneȱreasonȱforȱtheȱapplicationȱtoȱtheȱ Commissionȱwasȱtheȱquestionȱofȱauthorship;ȱwasȱthisȱtoȱpassȱtoȱtheȱanonymousȱreporterȱ whoȱsuppliedȱtheȱreportȱofȱtheȱmeetingȱatȱwhichȱtheȱdescriptionsȱofȱnewȱtaxaȱhadȱbeenȱ read,ȱorȱwasȱitȱtoȱcontinueȱtoȱbeȱseenȱasȱauthoredȱbyȱitsȱoralȱproposer?ȱȱ SubsequentlyȱMcAllanȱ(2004)ȱpublishedȱspecificȱproposalsȱinȱrespectȱofȱtwoȱnamesȱ givenȱtoȱbirdsȱfromȱNewȱZealandȱandȱtheseȱrevisedȱcitationsȱ–ȱnotȱaffectingȱtheȱyearȱofȱ publicationȱ–ȱhaveȱbeenȱacceptedȱ(Gillȱetȱal.,ȱ2010)ȱwithȱGouldȱstillȱtreatedȱasȱtheȱauthor.ȱȱ Takenȱindividually,ȱandȱinȱtheȱspiritȱofȱtheȱI.C.Z.N.’sȱOpinion,ȱaȱnumberȱofȱnamesȱ mainlyȱ fromȱ Australiaȱ andȱ theȱ Americasȱ thatȱ haveȱ aȱ similarȱ historyȱ meritȱ acceptanceȱ basedȱonȱtheȱdatesȱofȱtheȱearlierȱreportsȱinȱoneȱorȱotherȱofȱtheseȱjournals.ȱBecauseȱmostȱ changesȱ relateȱ toȱ priorȱ publicationȱ withinȱ theȱ sameȱ yearȱ fewȱ ofȱ these,ȱ orȱ theȱ Newȱ Zealandȱnames,ȱqualifiedȱforȱlistingȱinȱTableȱLXVIȱinȱtheȱCDȱwithȱ“Priority!”ȱ–ȱbutȱoneȱ didȱandȱwasȱmishandled.ȱItȱwasȱlistedȱinȱtheȱtableȱasȱaȱpaperȱinȱtheȱProceedingsȱforȱ1857ȱ whichȱdidȱnotȱappearȱuntilȱ1858;ȱbutȱ1857ȱnowȱneedsȱacceptance:ȱ EdwardȱC.ȱDickinsonȱ&ȱColinȱJonesȱ 77ȱ ZoologicalȱBibliographyȱ2012ȱ2(2&3)ȱ
