NamesȱinȱOrnithology”ȱ(hereafterȱcalledȱ“Priority!”)ȱbyȱDickinsonȱetȱal.ȱ(2011)ȱwasȱsubjectedȱtoȱ thoroughȱinternalȱreviewȱandȱtoȱreferees’ȱcomments,ȱandȱhas,ȱindeed,ȱbeenȱkindlyȱreviewedȱ (Banks,ȱ2012;ȱBarclay,ȱ2012;ȱKnox,ȱ2012),ȱbutȱitȱsometimesȱconveysȱunintendedȱinformationȱ orȱfailedȱtoȱmakeȱclearȱtheȱlimitationsȱimposedȱbyȱitsȱmethodology,ȱandȱitȱdidȱincludeȱsomeȱ errors.ȱOneȱofȱusȱ(CJ)ȱhasȱworkedȱthroughȱtheȱbookȱandȱaskedȱprobingȱquestions.ȱHeȱfoundȱ aȱ varietyȱ ofȱ errors.ȱ Hereȱ weȱ addressȱ mostȱ ofȱ theȱ pointsȱ raised;ȱ theȱ rest,ȱ concerningȱ D’Orbigny’sȱ“Voyageȱdansȱl’Amériqueȱméridionale”,ȱwillȱbeȱcoveredȱinȱaȱsecondȱjointȱpaper.ȱ PRECEDENCEȱ Inȱ“Priority!”ȱthereȱwasȱaȱtightȱfocusȱonȱtheȱworkȱandȱitsȱdateȱofȱpublication.ȱTableȱLXVIȱ wasȱderivedȱfromȱtheȱresearchȱintoȱtheseȱworks.ȱInȱtheȱIntroductionȱweȱwroteȱ“Ourȱlistsȱofȱ entriesȱdoȱnotȱprovideȱforȱtheȱoccasionalȱneedȱtoȱdetermineȱdatesȱofȱtwoȱdifferentȱworksȱandȱ stateȱ whichȱ hasȱ priority”.ȱ Thisȱ statement,ȱ whileȱ correct,ȱ underplaysȱ theȱ importanceȱ ofȱ rememberingȱtheȱneedȱforȱitȱisȱnotȱasȱrareȱasȱoneȱmightȱsuppose.ȱThusȱTableȱLXVIȱincludedȱ someȱ dateȱ changesȱ mentionȱinȱaȱfewȱcases,ȱbutȱnoȱcommentȱonȱtheȱsubjectȱappearsȱinȱtheȱintroductoryȱchaptersȱ perhapsȱ becauseȱ itȱ wasȱ feltȱ thatȱ suchȱ casesȱ deservedȱ separateȱ publicationȱ inȱ theȱ primaryȱ literature,ȱi.e.ȱinȱpeerȬreviewedȱjournals.ȱConsequentlyȱinȱ“Priority!”ȱeveryȱworkȱexaminedȱ wasȱ approachedȱ withȱ theȱ intentȱ toȱ determineȱ whetherȱ itsȱ dateȱ ofȱ publicationȱ wasȱ knownȱ withȱ certainty,ȱ orȱ someȱ degreeȱ ofȱ certainty,ȱ orȱ not.ȱ Thisȱ couldȱ easilyȱ haveȱ leftȱ theȱ readerȱ believingȱ thatȱ aȱ dateȱ ofȱ publicationȱ accepted,ȱ forȱ thatȱ work,ȱ byȱ Dickinsonȱ etȱ al.ȱ mustȱ beȱ correctȱ forȱ eachȱ newȱ scientificȱ nameȱ withinȱ it,ȱ andȱ theȱ provisionȱ ofȱ Tableȱ LXVIȱ mayȱ haveȱ strengthenedȱthatȱbelief.ȱThatȱparallelȱpublicationȱmadeȱthatȱassumptionȱdangerousȱwasȱnotȱ sufficientlyȱstressed.ȱȱ Theȱ followingȱ examplesȱ illustrateȱ theȱ needȱ toȱ checkȱ thatȱ theȱ presumedȱ dateȱmayȱnotȱbeȱdeterminativeȱbecauseȱreportsȱofȱtheȱmeetingsȱ–ȱsometimesȱincludingȱ theȱnameȱofȱaȱnewlyȱproposedȱtaxonȱandȱaȱdescription,ȱoftenȱmuchȱshortened,ȱȱappearedȱ daysȱ toȱ monthsȱ beforeȱ
