NOTES ON THE BIRDS OF CHIRIKOF ISLAND, ALASKA JACK J. WITHROW, University of Alaska Museum, 907 Yukon Drive, Fairbanks, Alaska 99775; [email protected] ABSTRACT: Isolated in the western Gulf of Alaska 61 km from nearest land and 74 km southwest of the Kodiak archipelago, Chirikof Island has never seen a focused investigation of its avifauna. Annotated status and abundance for 89 species recorded during eight visits 2008–2014 presented here include eastern range extensions for three Beringian subspecies of the Pacific Wren (Troglodytes pacificus semidiensis), Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia sanaka), and Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch (Leucost- icte tephrocotis griseonucha). A paucity of breeding bird species is thought to be a result of the long history of the presence of introduced cattle and introduced foxes (Vulpes lagopus), both of which persist to this day. Unique among sizable islands in southwestern Alaska, Chirikof Island (55° 50′ N 155° 37′ W) has escaped focused investigations of its avifauna, owing to its geographic isolation, lack of an all-weather anchorage, and absence of major seabird colonies. In contrast, nearly every other sizable island or group of islands in this region has been visited by biologists, and they or their data have added to the published literature on birds: the Aleutian Is- lands (Gibson and Byrd 2007), the Kodiak archipelago (Friedmann 1935), the Shumagin Islands (Bailey 1978), the Semidi Islands (Hatch and Hatch 1983a), the Sandman Reefs (Bailey and Faust 1980), and other, smaller islands off the Alaska Peninsula (Murie 1959, Bailey and Faust 1981, 1984). With the exception of most of the Kodiak archipelago these islands form part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge (AMNWR), and many of these publications are focused largely on seabirds. -

Despite having a rich avifauna in Iran, limited number of studies have been conducted on lice fauna of wild birds in this region. This study was carried out to identify lice species of passerine birds in East of Iran. A total of 106 passerine birds of 37 species were captured. Their bodies were examined for lice infestation. Fifty two birds (49.05%) of 106 captured birds were infested. They are very active foragers and welcomed guests of bird feeders that mostly eat seeds, especially thistle, and mainly eat sunflowers and nyjer at feeders. They are a common summer visitor to the Garden City Bird Sanctuary which has special "finch" feeders. Bird Statistics Description Scientific name- Carduelis (Spinus) tristis Size and Shape- A small finch with a short, Family- Fringillidae conical beak, small wings, and a notched tail. Conservation Status- Least concern Color Pattern- Males are bright yellow with Length- 4.3-5.1 in (11-13 cm) black cap. Females are golden yellow. En particular, la biología de anidación de varias especies de la familia Pipridae, conocida por sus carac- terísticos despliegues de machos en asambleas de cortejo, es poco conocida. Aquí proporcionamos descripciones y comparamos la arquitectura de nidos y lugares de anidación utilizados por tres especies de saltarines: Saltarín Cola de Alambre Pipra filicauda,Saltarín Coroniblanco P. pipra y Saltarín Coroniazul Lepidothrix coronata,presentes en la Amazonia baja del Ecuador.Encontramos 76 nidos de P. filicauda,13 nidos de P. pipra y 41 nidos de L. coronata.Los resultados indican que P. filicauda y L. coronata usan hábitat similares para anidar (flancos o crestas de quebradas pequeñas), mientras que P. pipra tiende a anidar en sitios relativamente abiertos rodeados por sotobosque más denso. Las tres especies construyen nidos pequeños, poco profundos, los cuales, a pesar de ser similares, son distinguibles debido a sus componentes estructurales y características de ubicación. Este estudio contribuye a nuestro conocimiento sobre los hábitos de anidación de la avifauna tropical.
