The fullest expression of the whig interpretation of western Canadian history is to be found in the works of George F.G. Stanley and W.L. Morton. In presenting a narrative reconstruction of the events surrounding Canada's annexation of Red River, these authors primarily attempt to justify Canadian policy as the extension of British civilization. -

Lauren Miller ROSETOWN (Qu’A) — Three milestones were celebrated at St. Andrew’s- Trinity Anglican-Lutheran Church on Nov. 3, 2019. The congregation and visitors from the community celebrated the centennial of the present church building, the 110th anniversary of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, and the 30th anniversary of the amalgamation of Trinity Lutheran Church and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Archdeacon Catherine Harper represented the Diocese of Qu’Appelle, bringing greetings from Bishop Rob Hardwick. The history of St. Andrew’s-Trinity Church blends two church histories into one. St. Andrew’s Anglican Church began as a mission as Anglican workers followed the railways out of Regina. The first services were held in Kings Hall in 1909. A mission house was purchased in 1912, followed by the building of the first church. In these early years there was a Sunday school, a ladies’ group, a choir, and a vestry to oversee the operation of the church. The first church building was destroyed by fire in December 1918. The congregation continued to worship as they planned to build a new church. This is the present day church on the corner of Third Avenue and Main Street. Rev. CONTEXT DOCUMENT on the FUR TRADE OF NORTHEASTERN NORTH DAKOTA (Ecozone #16) 1738-1861 by Lauren W. Ritterbush April 1991 FUR TRADE IN NORTHEASTERN NORTH DAKOTA {ECOZONE #16). 1738-1861 The fur trade was the commercia1l medium through which the earliest Euroamerican intrusions into North America were made. Tl;ns world wide enterprise led to the first encounters between Euroamericar:is and Native Americans. These contacts led to the opening of l1ndian lands to Euroamericans and associated developments. This is especial,ly true for the h,istory of North Dakota. It was a fur trader, Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de la Ve--endrye, and his men that were the first Euroamericans to set foot in 1738 on the lar;ids later designated part of the state of North Dakota. Others followed in the latter part of the ,eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth century. The documents these fur traders left behind are the earliest knowr:i written records pertaining to the region. These ,records tell much about the ear,ly commerce of the region that tied it to world markets, about the indigenous popu,lations living in the area at the time, and the environment of the region before major changes caused by overhunting, agriculture, and urban development were made. Trade along the lower Red River, as well as along, the Misso1.:1ri River, was the first organized E uroamerican commerce within the area that became North Dakota. Fortunately, a fair number of written documents pertainir.1g to the fur trade of northeastern North 0akota have been located and preserved for study. -

Britain’s Magnificent “Forts” The Freedom Freighters of WW 2 By Geoff Walker For our non-seafaring friends, many would associate the word “Fort” with some kind of medieval bastion or land based strong hold, but in the case to hand, nothing could be further from reality. Fort was the name given to a class of Cargo Ship built in Canada during WW2, for the British government (MOWT), under the Lend Lease scheme. All Fort ships, except two which were paid for outright, were transferred on bareboat charter, on Lend - lease terms, from the Canadian Government or the U.S. War Shipping Administration who bought ninety of the 'Forts' built in Canada. The construction of this type of ship commenced in 1942, and by war’s end well over 230 of these vessels had been delivered to the MOWT, (including all “Fort” variants and those built as Tankers) each at an average cost of $1,856,500. Often, confusion persists between “Fort” and “Park” class ships that were built in Canada. To clarify, “Fort” ships were ships transferred to the British Government and the “Park” ships were those employed by the Canadian Government, both types had similar design specifications. All Fort ships were given names prefixed by the word “Fort”, whilst “Park” ships all had names ending or suffixed with “Park” at the time of their launching, although names were frequently changed later during their working life. These ships were built across eighteen different Canadian shipyards. Their triple expansion steam engines were built by seven different manufacturers. There were 3 sub-classes of the type, namely, “North Sands” type which were mainly of riveted construction, and the “Canadian” and “Victory” types, which were of welded construction. -

Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de la Vérendrye, and his sons were the last important explorers during the French regime in Canada. Like many of their predecessors, they pushed westward in spite of lack of support from the king or his officials in Quebec, and in spite of the selfishness and greed of the merchants, who equipped their expeditions only to take all of the large profits of the fur trade made possible by energetic exploration. La Vérendrye was born on November 17, 1685, in the settlements of Three Rivers, where his father was governor. *1 He entered the army as a cadet in 1697. In 1704 he took part in a raid upon Deerfield, a settlement in the British colony of Massachusetts, and in 1705 he fought under Subercase when a French force raided St. John’s, Newfoundland. In 1707 La Vérendrye went to Europe and served with a regiment in Flanders against the English under the Duke of Marlborough. At the battle of Malplaquet (1710) he was wounded several times. Upon his recovery he was promoted to lieutenant, and in 1711 returned to Canada. For several years La Vérendrye served in the colonial forces. In 1712 he married and settled on the island of Dupas, near Three Rivers. There his four sons were born – Jean‐Baptiste, Pierre, Francois, and Louis‐Joseph. In 1726 La Vérendrye received the command of a trading post on Lake Nipigon, north of Lake Superior. -

Notes on Metis Culture and History Lawrence J. Barkwell Revised January 2015 Preface The history of Metis National identity spans over 300 years. Metis culture is an oral culture, the Michif library is the stories and recollections of our Elders. The Metis hunters of the plains were also a horse culture like the Dakota and Nakota. In our schools and universities the mainstream version of Metis history is taught. The Metis oral history versions are not taught. Until very recently there were no text books dedicated to Metis culture. Therefore we have produced two resource books. • Barkwell, Lawrence J., Leah Dorion and Darren R. Préfontaine. To this day there is only one University level set of courses teaching the Michif language The apex of Metis statesmanship and governance was achieved July 24, 1870 when the Legislative Assembly of Assiniboia voted to join Canada. Manitoba is the only province brought into Confederation by Aboriginal people—the Metis. The Metis were a people with their own Bill of Rights, their own flag, their own anthem and their own language long before Canada was a nation. • A nation with its own Bill of Rights (1849) In 1849, Alexander Isbister presented the first list of Metis rights to the Colonial Office in London. In 1869 Riel presented a list of rights to Canada.
