As we gather today, we acknowledge the sacred and traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat, the Anishnaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nations. This territory is covered by the Williams Treaties. Whitby Courthouse Theatre recognizes the enduring presence of all First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work in this community, and on this territory. From the Director

Alone in a prison cell somewhere in the dank bowels of Alcatraz Prison an inmate sits. Darkness surrounds him and the silence is deafening. Upon release from that cell he is a changed man. Originally placed there with the intention of punishing and reforming him, one is left to wonder if something unintended occurred. Did his stint in isolation give him the opportunity to plan an elaborate act of revenge? Perhaps it only drove him to insanity. Did he emerge as a murderer or a genius? Maybe it destroyed him as a man. That will be for the jury to decide.

We live in a world of unintended consequences. A government seeks to preserve jobs but their actions in doing so lead to scandal. Friends get appointed to high offices and charges of abound, while the population wonders if trust can be restored. Years ago, in Canada, a school system was created to “civilize” the indigenous people but left in its wake a tragedy of cultural rape. Some intentions are fool-hardy and should never have been initiated, and others are good and worthy yet somehow end up disastrously. On a more personal level, the “best of intentions” can and do go wrong. Simple apologies can right the wrong, but few find the strength to offer the apology. And we are left to decide what is truly the intention.

Murder in the First explores intentions and their consequences. An apparently “open and shut” case turns out to be anything but. Relationships, both personal and professional are called into play and unintended consequences emerge, damaging the relations and people face difficult decisions. The best laid plan can go awry, but can it be recovered? Are the courts seeking the truth or merely a conviction?

Murder in the First will ultimately ask of us, “is anything beyond a shadow of a doubt?” The cast examined this in rehearsals and great debates followed on who is the true victim. As we dug deeper into the author’s script, we found other levels of meaning, intention and consequences. All this we have placed on the stage before you. It will be for the jury to decide.
