The Wabasha Doctors’ Murder Trial By John W. Murdoch —Ṃ— Foreword By Douglas A. Hedin Editor, MLHP In the early 1950s, a decade after he retired from practicing law in Wabasha, John Murdoch wrote articles about two unusual cases in which he acted as co-counsel for the defense with John F. McGovern, “a brilliant Irish attorney and probably the best trial lawyer who has ever practiced in Wabasha.” The first, about a suit brought against the Village of Reads by financier Russell Sage, was published in The Lake City Graphic in February 1952. Murdoch explains the novel legal issues in the case in language most readers could understand. He delights in describing the tactics of the lawyers for both parties to achieve victory (including having a local legislator run a specially tailored bill through the legislature to thwart Sage). The second was published in The Wabasha County Herald on February 17, 1954, under the headline “Doctors’ Early Day Rivalry Resulted in Murder Trial.” Because there were no complex legal issues to unravel (the indictments of Doctors Lincoln and Bond are covered in one short paragraph and their trial in another), Murdoch devotes much of his article to describing the family background, education, work habits, ambitions, and idiosyncrasies of Doctors Lincoln and Milligan — in other words, what drove him to act as he did. Murdoch’s sharp portraits of the actors in this melodrama and his account of the doctors’ rivalry and jealousies that led to violence and the courtroom, suggest why he was such a formidable trail lawyer. He possessed superior narrative skills, and in a trial told his client’s story in a way that won the jury over. -

I know of no calling that is more rewarding, and at the same time, more demanding than being a minister. The modern minister faces a multitude of tasks that are both exciting and exacting. He must conduct funerals and weddings, often on the same day. He must be a scholar, a public speaker, an educator, a financier, a CEO, a personnel manager, a shepherd and a personal counselor. While still a student at Baylor University I became pastor of an open country church. I soon found myself confronted with many things I had seen and even been a part of in my home church, but to which I paid little attention until I was called on to do them myself. In the next 34 years I pastored churches of all sizes, my last church having more than 7,000 members. As I became pastor of larger churches I would ask young ministers to assist me in funerals, weddings, baptisms, so they could learn firsthand what to do. What I have recorded in this book are some of the things I tried to teach them. -

It also appears to have been a ―record breaker‖ with 89 registered workshop attendees. Not only was it a record-breaker for total attendance, but FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine also broke a personal participation record by sending 13 members of their staff. CVMer's attending covered a broad spectrum of experience and Center expertise - all the way from a summer student intern (Ms. Courtney Coddington) to two Office Directors (Dr. Steve Vaughn, Office of New Animal Drug Evaluation and Dr. Meg Oeller, Office of Minor Use and Minor Species). Page 1 of 27 A Caseworker’s Guide to Processing Cases with Israel “A Caseworker’s Guide to Processing Cases with Israel” provides contact and policy information and describes basic requirements for forms and procedures for use in cases between Israel and U.S. jurisdictions. Israel and the U.S. entered into a federal-level Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) under the terms of which Israel and the United States each express its intent to process child support requests for the other. The MOU provides for an initial period of three years effective February 5, 2009 through February 4, 2012. It continues in effect unless either side notifies the other that it wishes to end its cooperation. An initial period was agreed to because of Israel’s need to evaluate the number of cases coming from the U.S. and the cost of providing free services in these cases. Pursuant to this MOU, Israel has been declared a foreign reciprocating country according to section 459A of the Social Security Act (Act). Israel’s procedures conform substantially with the mandatory elements set forth in section 459A(b)(1) of the Act. Similar to U.S. procedures, Israel will enforce spousal support under the MOU only if the spousal support was entered together with a child support order. The Central Authority for Israel is the Legal Aid Department of the Ministry of Justice. This office was appointed as the Central Authority with respect to the United Nations Convention on Recovery of Maintenance Abroad (New York, 1956). Accordingly, the office has considerable experience working with international child support cases. -

If an emergency of retrieval arises, it is the responsibility of a manufacturer or distributor to initiate voluntarily and carry out a retrieval of its product that is found to be in violation of the Food and Drug Act. 2. The retrieval must be initiated when the manufacturer discovers or is informed of the infraction. 3. The burden in carrying out a retrieval is totally that of a manufacturer or distributor. 4. Although a retrieval will be conducted by a manufacturer or distributor, it must be carried out to satisfaction of the FDA. To be able to conduct a product retrieval to the satisfaction of the FDA, the following preparation and conditions are essential: 1. An established contingency plan. 2. Assigned responsibility and authority to specific management personnel to carry out the contingency plan. 3. A thorough understanding of the regulation guidelines on retrieval. 4. Recognition of the urgency that FDA places on effectiveness, promptness and thoroughness. 5. Accurate documentation of ingredient and materials used. 6. Accurate documentation of distribution of products. 7. Accurate coding. The proof of effectiveness can only be learned through Trial Runs. -
