WEIfOME TO LLANELLI and to the former Penbrey Airfield Site whicb vas recently purchased by the Borough Council, The intention is to develop this site consisting of sone. 6@ acres for active recreatl.onal purposes and in this respect the encouragement and development of motor sports is seen as one of the most important activitles that can be successfully accornmodated. Indeed, the pattern of roads and airstrips that exist, together with the fLat nature of the land offering ercellent visibility for spectators will ultinately enable circuits to be provided to serve all cLasses of race. The Venue is inportant both localty and nationally for club events and najor race meetings.

It is particularly gratifying that a start has beeu nade with the STAR TYRES/BRTTISH TRIAT AND RALLY DRTVEBS ASSOCIATION CLUBMANS RALLY CROSS CHAMPIONSIIIP on the 5th June, 1983, and the WELSH ROUND LLOYDS BOI{MAffiR BRITISH RALLY CROSS CEAIIPIONSHIPS on tb.e 24th Juty, 1983, and f wish the Organisers and participants every success.

the slte was then developed as an lntensive Poultry Farnlng complex which continued to operate untll sone 2i[ years ago.

Situated withln the Penbrey PenLneula tbe former R.A.F. gite c'as

seen as a key location on vhLch to broaden the raJrge of recreatlonal

facllitieg and actlvities avallable to the Borough and as a vetxue

for national and lnternatloual eventing. For this reason and

following the closure of the Poultry Farm the Borough Council acqulred the gite earller this year.

Tbe airfteld runways and roads and the large areas of flat opetr space

offering exceLlent visibiltty nakes lt an ideal site for tbe development of Motor Sports and eventlng generally and the Authorlty has already obtalned deened plannlng pernlselon for the hoLding of "motor sports'.

Continuing their quest to bring Rallycross to all parts of the country, The British Rallycross Drivers Association urere particularly interested early this year urhen it ulas announced that the L1anelli Borough Council urere proposing to build a Leisure complex at Pembrey. The information had come frsm Robert Allendar of the ldelsh Racing Drivers Assoeiation and after follouring up this early Iead, talks uith the Council led to permission being granted for the building of the neur track. In a very short time The British Rallycross Drivers Association decided on the location on the airfield for the Rallycross Track and dreu up plans for the R.A.C.[l|.S.A. to approve, and an RACtrack licence blas very quickly obtained. The Vale of Cothi lYlotorClub uere approached to co-promote the Rallycross meetings at Pembrey, supported by the BRDATsourn Enterprise Automobile Club.

It is very true to say that interest and support for the neul track, since its first eonception, has been running extremely high. The Llanelli Borough Council are r,rhole- heartedly behind the project, trihich is expected to go dorrrnextremely rr:ell- ulith a high proportion of bJelsh fiotor Sport enthusiasts and, ulith the demise of the Talbenny circuit, is assured to becomel/alesr premier track. The local Vale of Cothi lvl0 are rlrell into the venture and rrlill be co-promoting all meetings here at Pembrey rrlhich, if the BRDATsplans are met, uiIl include International events as ulell as National races. Uelcome to the very latest Rallycross circuit in the country. For those of you rrlho have never seen Rallycross before, uJecan assure you that you ulill not be disappointed by this exciting, all act,ion sport, ulhilst to tha regular folloulers ue feel sure that you ui1l find Pembrey a fitting venue for the sport and that the traek uill soon become established in Rallycross alongside such venues as Lydden Hill and .

So, uhat is'Rallycross? bleIl, take a hiqhly tuned racing engine, fit it into a lightened but extremely strong bodyshell that can take the rough and tumble rigours ofo sayr a forest track just as easily as it can cope urith smooth tarmac, set eight or ten such cars off together on a circuit made up of constantly changing surfaces for a fer,l laps and there you have it - Rallycross. Actually, it all sounds simple but in fact Rallycross is an extremely competitive and technically advanced sport, as todayls cars prove, bearing little resembl-ancensuJ to the Rally cars from ulhich they take their origins. Firstly, the cars have to be extremely strong, for accidents can happen anyulhere and the safety of drivers, spectators and marshals alike is all important. Secondly, pourer is a great advantage, not just in achieving a quick getarrlaybut also in enabling a driver to set the car up for a corner (as in ) r.,rhilst the suspension and tyres must be capabJ-eof taking the rough rrrith the smooth and ensure that all of the available horsepouer gets put uhere it belongs - onto the track. bJhena group of such cars attempt to tackle a circuj-t such as Pembreyall at the same time (called a heat) tnen thatrs uhen the action realIy statts.

In a Rallycross meeting, each driver normally competes in up to 3 Heats ulith the fastest tulo Heats counting touards the all important Finals. Times are recorded by each driver and the fastest c.ars go through into rfArror frBrtfinals, uith the first four or five cars homej.n each of the classtrArf Finals (there are tuio classes, for cars above 1600 cc and belorl 1600 cc) going foruard into a Superfinal to decide the outright uinner.

That, very briefly, is Rallycross - the Formula I of the Off-Roads lvlotor Sports - the rest you can pick up from uratching the regular meetings that uill take place here at Pe,nbreyin the coming months. There are all sorts of cars competing in the sport from the venerable lvlini through to Turbocharged Porsehes, Eseorts, Quattrots and even a Lancia Stratos. In Europe, uhere Rallycross has beeameextremely populart there are even such cars as rapid Turbocharged VLJBeetles, very quick Renault Alpines and even a Le lvlansengined Tuin Turbo Porsche 935. If all goes to plant then these cars rrrill also be seen here at Pembrey in the not too distant future. llhen you come to uratch Rallycross here at Pembrey, one things for certain - you ,uonrt go auiay disappointed.

Gegrqe trarren - Neath -: Escort lYlkII (4 Star Driver) George has been competing in Rallycross since the early days of the EmbassySeries, seen on B.B.C. Grandstand in the 60s and early 70s. He is almost aluays one of the front runners. George is the best knou.lnbJelsh International Rallycross Driver but over the last couple of years he has concentrated on International meetings in Belgium and Holland. Last year, on one of his rare appearances here, he beat the best in Britain to rrrin the Superfinal in the Lloyds BourmakerChampionship Round at Snetterton in Norfolk. George aluays turns out at the LJelsh Rallycross events, though, urhich up until last year urere held at Talbenny, and no doubt ue rrlill be seeing him here at Pembrey regularly. George is lookj-ng forurard to International Pleetings being held here ulhen he urill be able to proudly shou the Continentals hJelsh hospitality.

The car is a pushrod example and is not as poulerful as the B.D.A. engined Fiestas and Escorts that abound in Rallycross today. Nevertheless, llynford regularly gets this car into the trBrrFinals and at the last Round of the British Rallycross Championship held at Croft, North Yorkshire on lYlonday,2nd lYlay,Llynford qualified his less competitive car against the best in the country for the all important Final, uhere he finished a very creditable 6th.

Dave Pritchard - Allensmore. Hereford - lYletro1300 (3 Star Drj.ver) Davers lvletro has a very pretty spaee frame shell, uthich j-s his speciality. He builds lightueight rolling shells for all branches of . This example has the Leyland 1300 cc engine fitted. Dave uon the rrBrfFj.nal for the up to 1600 cc elass at the Brands Hatch Round of the Lloyds BoulmakerChampionshi-p recently.

Colin Riehards - Battersea. London. 5.hJ.11 - Chevette 3 Litre (4 Star Driver) Colin is the countryts leading Chevette driver; indeed, he has built virtually all the Chevettes that ure sea in Rallycross. For the last three years, Colin has persistently stuck rr;ith his brainchild, rrlhich virtually everyone said uould not uork, the 3000 cc Vauxhall slant tulin overhead cam engine, all other competition Chevettes run ulith a 2600 cc engine. The pistons in Colinrs car are from Formula 5000 and are the size of saucers. The block is extended in heiqht by the addition of a steel plate uith its orrlnuateruays and oilulays. Over the past 3 years, Colin has quite naturally had many development problems ulith this engine, but. this year, maj.ntained by lJessex, the engine is developing 320 B.H.F. and going urell. Co1in is determined to finish high in the British Championship; he has performed ue1l in the Championship so far, but only outright uins are good enough, so he says.

Trevor Hopkins - Eqerton. Kent - Fiesta (5 Star Driver) 3 times British Champion, 2nd in last yearrs British Rallycross Grand Prix at Brands Hatch against the best that Europe can put up gives you an idea of just horrrgood this big man from Kent is. Over the uinter, as an addition, he uon outright 5 .consecutive Rallycross meetings. There are nourmany Fiestas in British Rallycross, but Trevor had the first, and uith sponsorship frbm Hepolite and backing from Fords themselves, the ear uas gradually, over a tulo year period, developed and perfected. After three rounds of the Lloyds BorrrmakerBritish Championship this year, Trevor is in 4th Place overall, and uith 5 Rounds still to go, is in a good posi.tion to take the Championship again. Jj_hn l:jelch - Crogkham. Hants. - Escort lvlk II (4 Star Driver) John has never uon a Championship, but despite this he is generally acknoulledged to be our leading driver uhen it comes to International Rallycross. He j.s alu.raysup front u;heneverhe is competing at International level. At'the Rallycross Grand Prix last year against the best in the urorld, John qualified on Pole for the Grand Prix Final. Unfortunately he had to retire in that event due to mechanical problems. He holds the fastest time ever put up on the neul Brands Hatch Rallycross Track at 2 mj-ns. 49.1 sec. This year, though, John is eoncentrating on British events, and the Lloyds BoumakerChampionship in particular, so for the first tj-me for many years h* ig 1ot c_ompetingregularly on the Continent, urhich is our gain.

,DaveFuel1 - Redditch. Ljorcs. - Escort fYlkII (4 Star Driver)- Dave and his uell turned out car and transporfer have been seen at all the British Championship Rounds over the last 3 or 4 years. A very consistent driver, usually to be found amongst the top six in the over 1600 cc class. This year though Dave has not had too good a start to the British Championship season. There are I Rounds in the British Championship this year, uiith only 6 Rounds to count, so Dave no dsubt ui11 be pulling himself up the Champi.onshiptable over the nelt 5 Rounds.

Tonv Drummond- Stockton-on-Forest - Escort llk II (4 Stgjc Driver) Tony comes from rallying cauntry and, in fact, up until a feu years ago uas one of Yorkshirers top Ra1ly Drivers. He has a very flamboyant style of driving and is a great rival of John bJelch. hJhenTony is on form, he can beat the best. He finished third overall in the British Championship of 1978 and third overall again in 1980. Last year he took his first Rallycross title at the Croft Track and became the P.lasmor Northern Rallycross Champion.

John Greaslev - Amersham.Bucks - Porsche (4 Star Driver) John has been campaigning the Porsche since 1977; prior to that, r,ihenRallycross Regulations u,ere free, he ulas urell knorrlnfor his Rover V.B engined Imp. Many of the Porsches running in British Rallycross have been built by John, and his ouln particular car is uel1 knouln to B.B.C. Grandstand vieuers. John has uon the Final Round of the British Championship in front of the T.V. cameras for the last tuo years and is one of the feul Britains uho has beaten lvlartin Sehanehe, 3 times European Champion,again in front of B.B.C. Grandstand cameras at Lydden Hil1.
