Most of the returners are on defense where 10 of 11 are back. The better news? More than one of the returners is battling for his starting position because of the up-and-coming talent behind him. Offensively, Matt Cleveland was the lone starter standing after four graduated in the spring of 2010. The good news here? The same five started working together early in fall camp and have secured the starting roles to form the nucleus of the offense. They’ll be protecting one of the nation’s best in senior Nathan Enderle, who is on the Davey O’Brien, Manning Award and Unitas Golden Arm watch lists. He has a multitude of familiar faces to whom to throw and two veterans are returning to the backfield. “I like the fact that we have more depth,” Akey said in assessing the 2010 roster. “I like the fact I see us performing better on defense. I like the fact we’re talking about some weapons we can get the football to a number of guys that have already made plays for us. Those things are very positive.” 4 2009 UNIVERSITY OF FOOTBALL

NNOTESOTES 2010 CAPTAINS WATCHING: Quarterback Nathan Enderle is on the Manning Award, Unitas Golden Arm and Davey O’Brien Award watch lists, while safety Shiloh Keo is on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list. Both are fifth-year seniors with the Vandals. Enderle is one of the nation’s top two returning pass efficiency leaders in the country and Keo is the top returning tackler in the Western Athletic Conference and is No. 8 in terms of returning solo stop leaders. BEEN AROUND A WHILE: When Idaho plays at Utah State on Nov. 20, it will be 1,000th Vandal football game (although they weren’t know as the Vandals until 1921). NATHAN ENDERLE HOME OPENER A CHANGE OF PACE: The Vandals open the 2010 season at home for the first time since 1998 when they played Eastern Washington – and won 31-14. 2010 also marks the first non-Saturday home regular-season games for Idaho since 1960. First, there is the Thursday, Sept. 2, opener against the Univer- sity of North Dakota then there is the Friday, Nov. 12, home game against Boise State. This also is a year during which the Vandals play in five time zones – Western Michigan (Eastern), Nebraska and Louisiana Tech (Central), Colorado State and Utah State (Mountain) and Hawai`i (Hawai`ian). IDAHO SECOND MOST IMPROVED: The Vandals’ turn-around in 2009 was the second best in the country behind SMU. After a 2-10 2008, Idaho went 8-5 in JONAH SATARAKA 2009 to earn the distinction.

COM EARNING SOME RESPECT: Idaho was chosen fourth by the media and sixth by . the coaches in the Western Athletic Conference’s preseason polls. NOVIKOFF RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEERISM: University of Idaho starting right tackle Tyrone Novikoff is one of 112 football players nationwide – and the only one from the WAC, to be nominated to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. Two teams – one Football Bowl Subdivision and one representing college footballs other divisions, will be announced in September. MOVING ON: Four former Vandals continue to play the game in the NFL with former guard making a big splash with the San Francisco 49ers after JOJO DICKSON being selected as the 17th player overall in the 2010 draft. Iupati has earned a WWW. starting role with the 49ers and is making headlines almost daily with his ability — as a rookie, to impact the game. Two of his former teammates – receiver Max Komar, who also graduated in the spring of 2010, and linebacker David Vobora, who graduated in 2007, continue to play. Komar is a rookie with Arizona, while Vobora begins his third season with St. Louis. The elder statesman of the group is Tennessee Titan offensive guard Jake Scott, who is in his seventh NFL season. SPEAKING OF FORMER IDAHO GUARDS : Legendary University of Idaho and Green Bay Packer guard Jerry Kramer’s book Instant Replay is scheduled to go into movie production. Robert DeNiro has signed on to play Vince Lombardi. Screen writer Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Horse Whisperer and The Curious Case of SHILOH KEO Benjamin Button) has signed on for the project. SCOTT’S A VANDAL: Amidst the flurry of attention following the Vandals’ thrilling 43-42 victory over Bowling Green in the 2009 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl, coach Robb Akey recruited a new Vandal on the airwaves. ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt Show. Check the set for the Vandal helmet. ALREADY ANOTHER RING: Starting right guard Adam Juratovac already has added another championship ring to the one from the Humanitarian Bowl. Over the summer, he played for the Spokane Shock of the . The Shock, with Juratovac pulling double (actually triple when you add special teams assignments), won the Arena Bowl title. The next week he was in law school at the BRANDON ARTZ University of Idaho.
