Faust showed a special talent for slipping through the line on kick attempts, and it has resulted in three blocked fi eld goals and a blocked punt. His most recent block, a punt against Idaho, tied the school record for blocked kicks in a season with four.

All three of Faust’s fi eld goal blocks have come at crucial times in the game and helped steal the momentum for the Bulldogs. His fi rst block came near the end of the fi rst half against Hawaii with the Warriors attempting a 48-yarder to cut the lead to 21-17. Instead, Tech entered the locker room up 21-14.

Faust’s second block came in the third quarter against New Mexico State with Tech trailing 14-6. The Bulldogs kicked a fi eld goal of their own to cut the lead to 14-9 on their ensuing drive. With Tech’s rally in the fourth quarter to win the game 22-21, the blocked fi eld goal by Faust proved to be the difference in the game.

His third block came near the end of the fi rst half at Utah State. The Aggies were attempting a a 50-yd FG to tie the game. The block gave Tech a chance a Hail Mary to close the half and come back in the second half with all the momentum. Utah State would not score again until the fourth quarter, and Tech won 31-21. Faust’s blocked punt was the fi rst blocked punt for Tech since November 13, 2004 against Tulsa. He is tied with Walter Johnson for the school record in blocked kicks. Johnson blocked four punts in 1985 to set the record, and he leads the nation in blocks.

He returned six kicks for an average of 33.17 yards with a long of 47. He jumped near the top of the list in the nation’s leading kick returners from the Cal game alone.

HAWAII GAME Last week’s 45-44 loss in overtime was the second most points scored by a Bulldog team in a loss. The high mark of 45 was scored in a 49-45 loss to Nevada in 1995.

The total of 89 points ranks sixth all-time for most combined points scored in a loss by Louisiana Tech. The most scored by both teams in a loss is 94 set in the 1995 Nevada game and again in 1998 in a 64-30 loss to Central Florida.

Patrick Jackson rushed for two touchdowns against Hawaii. It was his third career multi-touchdown game but his fi rst with two scores on the ground.

Tight end Dennis Morris scored his fi rst career rushing touchdown when he pounded the ball in from the goal line. He fumbled the ball out of bounds two plays earlier at the one-yard line on a 21-yard rush.

Receivers Philip Beck and Joe Anderson both set career marks for receptions and yards. Beck had fi ve catches for 40 yards, while Anderson pulled in four balls for 41 yards.

Tight end Dustin Mitchell scored his second career touchdown in overtime. It was his second consecutive game with a touchdown.

Quarterback Zac Champion helped control the ball with an effi cient performance. He completed 23-of-36 passes (63.9 percent) for 187 yards and two touchdowns. He threw no interceptions, and the offense as a whole had no turnovers.

Tech’s offense controlled clock to keep Hawaii’s offense off the fi eld with 32:46 time of possession. In the fourth quarter, Tech took advantage of turnovers to eat the clock as Hawaii’s offense won on the fi eld for just 5:10 in the fi nal stanza.

Against the high-powered offense of the Warriors, the Bulldogs kept pace. Tech ran 85 plays from scrimmage to Hawaii’s 81. Tech also pounded the ball for 223 yards rushing. Hawaii’s passing attack went for 548 yards, but the Bulldogs held the Warriors to just 45 yards on the ground.

Linebacker Quin Harris had a career night against the nation’s top offense of Hawaii. Harris was well short of his career-high tackle mark with fi ve, GAME TEN - LSU - NOV. 10, 2007 GENERAL NOTES - 10 but he had one sack during Hawaii’s last drive of regulation to hold the Warriors to a fi eld goal and force overtime. CENTRAL ARKANSAS GAME Louisiana Tech won its fi rst season opener since 2004 by defeating Central Arkansas 28-7 last Saturday at Stadium. Tech’s last season opener win came at home against Nevada.

The Bulldog defense shined in its opener against Central Arkansas. After giving up a touchdown on the Bears’ fi rst drive of the game, Tech shut them down and forced one fumble, four punts and fi ve interceptions.

Tech’s fi ve interceptions on defense against Central Arkansas ties for sixth all-time by a Bulldog defense in a game. The Bulldogs have picked off fi ve passes previously against Kansas in 1987 and Western Carolina in 1974.

BULLDOGS’ BRAVEST Louisiana Tech backup deep snapper Austin Kesterson works more than just on the fi eld. The Bossier City native works as a fi reman for the Lincoln Parish Fire Department.

GUARD DAWG Corner back Tony Moss intercepted three passes against Central Arkansas to help lead the Bulldogs to victory. All three of his interceptions came inside Tech territory with two of them occuring inside the Bulldog two yard line, ending UCA scoring threats. Moss earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week for his effort, the fi rst of his career. His last interception came against North Texas in 2005 to seal the win against the Mean Green.

Moss is the fi rst Tech player to intercept three passes in a game since Fred Lewis did it against Boise State in 1998. Tech won that game 63-28.

His three picks are one shy of the school record of four held by John Causey, who set the mark in 1972 against UT-Arlington, and Jean Dornier tied it in 1979 against UL-Lafayette.

DAWG LEG Punter Chris Keagle showed what a year of hard work can do for a player in Tech’s season opener against Central Arkansas. Keagle averaged 38.39 yards per punt in 2006. Keagle showed signs of big improvement during spring and fall camp and displayed it against Central Arkansas.

Keagle booted six punts for a total of 299 yards, an average of 49.8. He kicked three of them over 50 yards with boots of 57 and 59 yards. He also placed three punts inside the 20 to pin the Central Arkansas offense back in their own territory. For his performance Keagle was named WAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Through nine games, Keagle is averaging 41.4 yards a punt and has placed 35% inside the 20-yard line. Tech is No. 32 in the country in net punting average at 37.1 yards.

RETURNING TO FORM The Bulldogs entered the 2007 season with the kick return position locked with both Patrick Jackson and Weldon Brown returning. The question mark on special teams was punt returner. In the season opener against Central Arkansas, Jackson proved why he was second team All-WAC in 2006 returning kicks. He returned two kicks for an average of 31 yards. For the season Brown is fourth in the WAC (No. 34 in nation) averaging 25.3 yards a return. Jackson is averaging 22.5 yards to rank 9th in the WAC.

Receiver Philip Beck was among four players up for the punt returner position. He turned heads and caught the eye of the fans when his second career punt return went for 54 yards, negating a 56-yard punt by UCA. His third return was 49 yards to cancel out a 42-yard kick. He averaged 40.3 yards a return. He is averaging 15.93 yards a return and ranks 12th in the nation and fi fth in the WAC.

DOOLEY NOTED Louisiana Tech head coach Derek Dooley made his head coaching debut against Central Arkansas at on September 1 and won 28-7. Dooley is the son of legendary Georgia head coach Vince Dooley. The elder Dooley lost his fi rst career game at Georgia 31-3 against Alabama on Sept. 19, 1964 in Tuscaloosa. The following weekend, Vince registered his fi rst career win at Georgia, defeating Vanderbilt 7-0 in Nashville (Sept. 26, 1964). During his 25-year coaching career at Georgia (1964-1988), Vince registered a 201-77-10 mark.

NON-CONFERENCE CHALLENGE Louisiana Tech again plays a strong non-conference schedule with three of ’s traditional powerhouses on the bill. This year natio- nachamps.net ranks Louisiana Tech’s non-conference scheulde as the hardest in the nation with trips to preseason No. 12 California and No. 2 LSU. A road trip to SEC power Ole Miss adds to the degree of diffi culty, and the only home non-conference game is against a Central Arkansas team that just cracked the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) ranks last year after fi nishing ranked in the Division II Top 25 four times since 2000.

SMART DAWGS Louisiana Tech was recognized by the Coaches Association as one of 32 schools to graduate at least 70 percent of its football student-athletes in 2007. Tech was the only school in the WAC and in the state of Louisiana to receive this honor.

The Bulldogs had 10 players named Academic All-WAC last year.

Cornerback Tony Moss, left tackle Tyler Miller and linebacker Marquis McBeath all received their bachelor’s degrees before beginning their senior seasons at Louisiana Tech. Right guard Ryan Considine also has already earned his bachelor’s degree. This summer he completed his master’s in business administration.

Defensive lineman Wes Day was named Academic All-WAC last year and currently holds a 4.0 GPA. Day is majoring in biology with an emphasis on pre-med.

NEW ATTITUDE NEW LOOK New head coach Derek Dooley has brought a new attitude to the Bulldog program. He also has brought a new look to the team. The Bulldogs this year will be outfi tted by Nike. The team is keeping the traditional three-stripes on the shoulder and have added a white stripe to the helmet.

Dooley also helped raise money to renovate the locker room. The Bulldogs have new lockers and carpet and completely renovated the showers and restrooms.

MORE BULLDOG NOTES With the win over Central Arkansas Louisiana Tech is 48-47-5 in season openers, including a record of 8-1 at Joe Aillet Stadium

Tech is 37-16-5 overall in season openers at home, including games played at Independence Stadium.

Tech’s only loss in Joe Aillet Stadium on opening day was 12-7 to Tennessee-Chattanooga in 1978.

Tech went through a streak of 13 years without opening the season at home from 1983-95.

Louisiana Tech was selected to fi nish seventh in the Western Athletic Conference this year in preseason polling of the coaches and league media. Last year’s team fi nished eighth going 3-10 overall and 1-7 in WAC play.

The Bulldogs return 19 starters this season and have three other players with starting experience on the roster. Louisiana Tech’s defense has 10 starters returning. WHAT THEY’RE SAYING BARK OF A NEW GENERATION ABOUT DEREK DOOLEY Derek Dooley was named the 31st head coach in Louisiana Tech football history on Dec. 17, 2006, and began the next era of Bulldog Football. Nick Saban Head Coach Dooley, who is the son of former Georgia head coach and athletic director Vince Dooley, comes to Louisiana Alabama Crimson Tide Tech following a two year stint as the tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins. LOUISIANA TECH 28, IDAHO 16 Kibbie Dome — Moscow, Idaho November 3, 2007 MOSCOW, Idaho – Louisiana Tech’s defense slowed Idaho down long enough for the offense to fi nally provide a spark late in the game for a 28-16 victory on the road. Both offenses sputtered throughout the game until freshman receiver Phillip Livas broke a tackle and made a move down fi eld for a 70-yard touchdown reception. The win gives the Bulldogs back-to-back road conference wins for the fi rst time since 2005 when Tech defeated Utah State and Idaho in successive weeks. Tech defeated the same two teams this time as well. Tech (4-5, 3-3 WAC) struggled moving the ball through the air until the second half when Zac Champion connected on passes of 20 yards to Shane Womack and hit Joe Anderson on back-to-back plays to move the chains. Running back Patrick Jackson provided the fi nal nail in the coffi n for Idaho (1- 9, 0-6) with a touchdown run to build the lead to 28-16 with 1:48 remaining in the game. Jackson had 155 yards rushing in the game for a career-high. Idaho could not take advantage of its fi rst second-half lead since its victory over Cal Poly as Tech scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The Vandals kicked two fi eld goals in the third quarter to pull ahead 16-14 but could not hold on to get the win. Tech’s defense again proved to be solid at stopping the run allowing 67 yards on the ground and providing an early spark to the team. On Idaho’s fi rst drive of the day, defensive end Ben McGilton tipped a pass by Nathan Enderle in the air. He pulled down the interception and returned it two yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. It was Tech’s fi rst interception return for a touchdown since Corey Brazil returned one 92 yards against Rice in 2004.
