Three Vandals - punter Bobby Cowan, receiver/returner Justin Veltung, and center Mike Marboe, are on pre-season watch lists. Cowan is among the punters on the Ray Guy Award Watch List, while Veltung is on the Paul Hornung Watch List (which honors college football’s most versatile player), and Marboe is on the Rimington Award Watch List, which goes to the nation’s top center. The Vandals have two international players – sophomore long snapper/defensive lineman Marius Burgsmueller is from Germany and found his way to Idaho via former Vandal Patrick Venzke, an offensive linepman on the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl Champion- ship team, and Chester Faiai, who is from American Samoa. Another freshman, Kerey Kuheana, was born in Japan, spent his growing up years in Spokane and Post Falls, before winding up in England for high school. SPEAKING OF COWAN

Despite booting a 71-yard punt against Bowling Green State last year, he still does not have the Idaho mark. That mark, which appears untouchable, is an 83-yarder by Vandal Athletics Hall of Famer Flip Kleffner in 1953. To his credit, Cowan has a 67-yarder as a freshman and a 65-yarder as a sophomore. Senior kicker Trey Farquhar is in good company. He is one of two active kickers in the country with fi ve fi eld goals of 50 or more yards. He is tied with Florida’s Caleb Sturgis, who also has been successful on fi ve kicks of 50 or longer. Farquhar’s kicks are 50 (twice), 52, 54, and 55.
