IDAHO COACH (2-16 at Idaho, career 2-16 [second season]): Akey came to Idaho in Decem- ber 2007 after spending the past eight seasons as an assistant coach at Washington State University. Akey is a 1988 graduate of Weber State University, which his where his coaching career was launched with an assistantship that ultimately included time as a defensive line coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator. In 1995, he was hired as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Northern Arizona, He worked his way up to defensive coordinator and served in that capacity from 1996-98 before joining the Washington State University staff.

FRESNO STATE COACH PAT HILL (88-57 at Fresno State, 88-57 career [12th season]): Hill is a 1973 graduate of UC Riverside where he was a three-time all-conference center and an all-American as a senior. His coaching career began in 1974 at LA Valley College. His next two stops were in the collegiate ranks (Utah, 1977-80 and UNLV, 1981-82) before his first professional stop (CFL’s Calgary Stampeders, 1983). He re- turned to with assistantships at Fresno State (1984-89) and Arizona (1990-91) before back-to-back NFL stops (Cleveland, 1992-95, and Baltimore, 1996) before taking his first head coaching job with his 1997 return to Fresno State.

CAPTAINS Senior center Adam Korby (Poudre, Colo.), junior safety (Everett, Wash.) and senior Eddie Williams (San Mateo, Calif.) were voted by their teammates as captains for the 2008 season. Korby, on the Rimington Watch list for the third successive season and a repeat as offensive captain, started 35 consecu- tive games prior to the Vandals’ opening-game kickoff at Arizona. He’s a three-time winner if Idaho’s Wayne Walker Ironman Award. He was a 2007 second-team all-WAC choice as well as honorable mention on Phil Steele’s 2007 all-WAC team. Keo, the Vandal’s defensive captain, is in his third season as a starter and is coming off a season during which he was an all-WAC choice at safety and as a punt returner and earned Idaho’s Award as the Vandals’ most valuable player. In 2007, he also was a Rivals.com all-WAC punter returner and was recognized on Phil Steele’s all-WAC second team as a safety and punt returner. He set an all-time Idaho punt returner record with a 100-yarder against Northern Illinois. Williams, who plays an integral role on the Vandal offense as a tight end/H-back, also was chosen the captain for Idaho’s special teams. Williams is a three-year letterman who played as a true freshman in 2005. He has 46 career receptions for 518 yards. He has scored five touchdowns as a receiver and three as a runner.

WILLIAMS PLAYS AN H OF A GAME: Senor h-back Eddie Williams is the second leading receiver both in terms of reception average (6.0) and receiving yards (83.3) in WATCHING ... the Western Athletic Conference. Those numbers weigh in nationally at 28th (receiving yards per game) and in a tie for 33rd (receptions per game). CAN HE PLAY IN THE BAND, TOO?: Sophomore Quin Ashley is compiling an inter- esting list of statistics this fall. He has seen action at running back (eight carries, 17 yards), receiver (three receptions for 51 yards) and quarterback, where, although he hasn’t completed a pass, he’s thrown three and run the offense on occasion.
