Season 6, Episode 9: Shipwreck Cannons Gwen Wright: Our first story investigates a maritime mystery washed up on an Oregon beach. 1846: tensions between the U.S. and Britain are approaching a boiling point. All eyes are focused on the disputed border between the U.S. and the British colonial territory of Canada. At stake is ownership of the enormous riches of some 300,000 square miles of the Pacific Northwest. The U.S. needs reconnaissance, and dispatches an armed naval vessel – the USS Shark . But that September disaster strikes; the Shark wrecks and sinks at the treacherous mouth of the Columbia River. More than a century and a half later, fourteen-year-old Miranda Petrone, from Tualatin, Oregon, thinks she may have found a piece of this historic ship. Miranda: Me and my dad were walking along the beach. And I saw this big thing with rust. And I’m like, hey dad, come here. Gwen: I’m Gwen Wright, nice to meet you. So I heard you found something pretty interesting around here. Miranda: Yeah. Gwen: What was it? Miranda: We found a cannon. Gwen: Now, are you sure it was a cannon? Miranda: Well, not at first. Me and my dad were walking along the beach. Then there was this big black rocky thing so I went up a little closer and eventually saw rust. I thought, rocks aren't supposed to have rust. And so, I called my dad over. He came and checked it out. He's like, huh, maybe it's a cannon. He was just joking though. -
Historical Overview
HISTORIC CONTEXT STATEMENT The following is a brief history of Oregon City. The intent is to provide a general overview, rather than a comprehensive history. Setting Oregon City, the county seat of Clackamas County, is located southeast of Portland on the east side of the Willamette River, just below the falls. Its unique topography includes three terraces, which rise above the river, creating an elevation range from about 50 feet above sea level at the riverbank to more than 250 feet above sea level on the upper terrace. The lowest terrace, on which the earliest development occurred, is only two blocks or three streets wide, but stretches northward from the falls for several blocks. Originally, industry was located primarily at the south end of Main Street nearest the falls, which provided power. Commercial, governmental and social/fraternal entities developed along Main Street north of the industrial area. Religious and educational structures also appeared along Main Street, but tended to be grouped north of the commercial core. Residential structures filled in along Main Street, as well as along the side and cross streets. As the city grew, the commercial, governmental and social/fraternal structures expanded northward first, and with time eastward and westward to the side and cross streets. Before the turn of the century, residential neighborhoods and schools were developing on the bluff. Some commercial development also occurred on this middle terrace, but the business center of the city continued to be situated on the lower terrace. Between the 1930s and 1950s, many of the downtown churches relocated to the bluff as well. -

At one time the site was the primary location for Water Environment Services (formerly the Utilities Department) and the Department of Transportation Development Services / Transportation Maintenance; currently the site houses a dilapidated office building, Clackamas County Fleet Services, Vector Control, Sheriff’s Office Fleet Operations and the Transportation Maintenance Division. The dilapidated office building, commonly referred to as the Utilities Building, was constructed and owned by Clackamas County Service District #1 (CCSD #1), and subsequently transferred to Water Environment Services (WES), although the County retained title to the real property on which the building was situated. The Utilities Building has not been used by CCSD #1 or WES for over a decade. -

Jesse Applegate (1811-1888) 1 http://sos.oregon.gov/archives/exhibits/constitution/Pages/during-about-applegate.aspx Biographical Sketch of Jesse Applegate Born 1811, Died 1888 , Umpqua County delegate Jesse Applegate was born on July 5, 1811, in Henry County, Kentucky. He moved to and was schooled in St. Louis, Missouri, where he learned surveying. In 1831 he married and took up a land claim in St. Clair County, Missouri and farmed, surveyed and kept a country store. In 1843, Jesse along with his wife and many children and accompanied by two brothers and their families moved to Oregon. He served as member of the legislative committee of the provisional government in 1845. In 1846 he was involved in establishing an important southern route to Oregon, which was later known as the Applegate Trail. He represented Umpqua County at the constitutional convention but withdrew when a resolution he proposed prohibiting the discussion of slavery was not adopted. “I have no doubt there is honesty and talent enough in this body to frame a constitution that will be approved by the people of Oregon without my assistance.” He served for a number of years both as justice of the peace and as postmaster of Yoncalla. In 1856, he acted as a guide for Major Kearney in a campaign against the Rogue River Indians. He died on April 22, 1888. Applegate settled on a land claim in the Umpqua Valley in 1849 in a place he called Yoncalla after the local Indian tribe. There he farmed and raised cattle. A student and writer, Applegate maintained a large library in his house. -

It is fifty folios in length in a bound volume of ninety folios, the final forty folios being blank. James Douglas meet Delgamuukw "The implications of the Delgamuukw decision on the Douglas Treaties" The latest decision of the Supreme Court of Canada in Delgamuukw vs. The Queen, [1997] 3 S.C.R. 1010, has shed new light on aboriginal title and its relationship to treaties. The issue of aboriginal title has been of particular importance in British Columbia. The question of who owns British Columbia has been the topic of dispute since the arrival and settlement by Europeans. Unlike other parts of Canada, few treaties have been negotiated with the majority of First Nations. With the exception of treaty 8 in the extreme northeast corner of the province, the only other treaties are the 14 entered into by James Douglas, dealing with small tracts of land on Vancouver Island. Following these treaties, the Province of British Columbia developed a policy that in effect did not recognize aboriginal title or alternatively assumed that it had been extinguished, resulting in no further treaties being negotiated1. This continued to be the policy until 1990 when British Columbia agreed to enter into the treaty negotiation process, and the B.C. Treaty Commission was developed. The Nisga Treaty is the first treaty to be negotiated since the Douglas Treaties. This paper intends to explore the Douglas Treaties and the implications of the Delgamuukw decision on these. What assistance does Delgamuukw provide in determining what lands are subject to aboriginal title? What aboriginal title lands did the Douglas people give up in the treaty process? The Road to Oregon Written by Dr. Jim Tompkins, a prominent local historian and the descendant of Oregon Trail immigrants, The Road to Oregon is a good primer on the history of the Oregon Trail. Unit I. The Pioneers: 1800-1840 Who Explored the Oregon Trail? The emigrants of the 1840s were not the first to travel the Oregon Trail. The colorful history of our country makes heroes out of the explorers, mountain men, soldiers, and scientists who opened up the West. In 1540 the Spanish explorer Coronado ventured as far north as present-day Kansas, but the inland routes across the plains remained the sole domain of Native Americans until 1804, when Lewis and Clark skirted the edges on their epic journey of discovery to the Pacific Northwest and Zeb Pike explored the "Great American Desert," as the Great Plains were then known. The Lewis and Clark Expedition had a direct influence on the economy of the West even before the explorers had returned to St. Louis. Private John Colter left the expedition on the way home in 1806 to take up the fur trade business. For the next 20 years the likes of Manuel Lisa, Auguste and Pierre Choteau, William Ashley, James Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzgerald, and William Sublette roamed the West. These part romantic adventurers, part self-made entrepreneurs, part hermits were called mountain men. By 1829, Jedediah Smith knew more about the West than any other person alive. The Americans became involved in the fur trade in 1810 when John Jacob Astor, at the insistence of his friend Thomas Jefferson, founded the Pacific Fur Company in New York.
