HUMANITIES INSTITUTE ARABIC LITERATURE – Postclassical Period Devin J Stewart, Ph.D. Classical Poetry : Qasidah (Ode) The “Hanging Odes”, the Dichotomy of Chaste and Not-So-Chaste Love, Wine-Poetry, Mystical Poetry, and other uses of the classical ode (qasidah) The pre-Islamic Ode. The pre-Islamic poet `Antarah ibn Shaddad wrote, “Have the poets left a song unsung?” Already in the pre-Islamic period, Arabic poetry had a long and venerable tradition. The most prestigious art form of the Arabs, it served many roles in society. The earliest recorded sources reveal that the most valued form of Arabic poetry was the qasidah or ode, a form that is still in use today, having enjoyed a life of over fifteen centuries. The qasidah varied in length from about 30 to 100 lines, adopted monorhyme, and consisted of individual verses (bayt) made up of two hemistichs (misra`), with a caesura in the middle. By convention, the first hemistich in the first verse of the poem also rhymed with the second hemistich—the same monorhyme—in an effect termed tasri`. Critics identified sixteen distinct meters, all quantitative, involving set patterns of long and short syllables like the meters of Greek, Latin, and Sanskrit poetry. The qasidah was typically tripartite, beginning with an amatory prelude (nasib), which portrayed the poet traveling in the desert and coming across the abandoned campsite of a former love; the intensity of the emotion evoked by the traces or ruins (atlal) of his loved cause him to compose a poem. The middle section of the poem, the journey (rahil), described the hardships the poet went through in order to reach the patron or the audience. -

International Journal of Innovation, Creativity and Change. www.ijicc.net Volume 13, Issue 5, 2020 Modernization and Resistance: Healing the Social Ills in Leila Aboulela’s Lyrics Alley aAli Abdullah Saaed Alfuady, bLecturer Ahmed Sa'ad Aziz (Ph.D.), cLecturer Suhaib Majeed Kadhem, a,b,cDepartment of English/College of Arts/ University of Al-Qadisiyah /Iraq, Email: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Following the postcolonial Sudanese writer, Tayeb Salih’s perspective in his famous novel, Season of Migration to the North (1969), Leila Aboulela exposes the binary identity that her characters gain it through migration and transportation. This paper examines the traditional resistance to modernity in Aboulela’s Lyrics Alley (2011). It investigates how Sudanese parochial norms resist the Western modernity and how to rejuvenate and modernize such tradition. As she attempts to create a real image of the Sudanese postcolonial situation, Aboulela shows out the deep- rooted norms of Sudan that set up a barrier between Sudanese tradition and Western modernity. Sudanese think of education as a shame for women and a waste of time for men. Education is considered “as being a great evil that come to them with the armies of occupation” (Tayeb Salih 1969: 19). The novel points out the feminist voice which strives to get her moral choice, her privacy and her personal freedom. It brings out the importance of education to narrow the gap between Sudan and the West that may help Sudanese cope with modern world. The paper critically questions women’s position in the conservative Sudanese family and the fragmented identity that fails to stand in front of the patriarchal hegemony. -

Prof. Dr. International Islamic University Malaysia, [email protected] Abstract The method of teaching literature at a secondary or tertiary level has always been a matter of interest and a topic of discussion in many countries. However, not until recently has the role and importance of literature in the English and Arabic as the first or second level classrooms been given emphasis. This study examines how Arabic poems and proverbs can be used as effective methods in the teaching and learning of Arabic to non-native speakers in Malaysia. It proposes that new and more innovative and effective methods should be introduced to replace the current conventional methods of teaching Arabic. The teaching of literature; i.e., Arabic poems and proverbs requires a passion for literature itself. When the passion for literature has been instilled, language learners will enjoy their literature courses, and find them to be easier than before they had this awareness. As a result of the learners‟ advancement and acquired appreciation, they are able to access the vast linguistic treasures Arabic literature has to offer and therefore, simultaneously improve their competence in Arabic. C ,\,,: 41-------<..<.LI-hY,-""lA""""","""I,--ft-'t _ '" I) Abstract Mustafa Sadiq al-Rafii, a modem Egyptian writer with classical style, is not studied by scholars of Arabic literature as are his contemporary liberals, such as Taha Hussein. This thesis provides a historical background and a brief literary survey that helps contextualize al-Rafii, the period, and the area he came from. AI-Rafii played an important role in the two literary and intellectual schools during the Arabic literary revival, which extended from the French expedition (1798-1801) to around the middle of the twentieth century. These two schools, known as the Old and the New, vied to shape the literature and thought of Egypt and other Arab countries. The former, led by al-Rafii, promoted a return to classical Arabic styles and tried to strengthen the Islamic identity of Egypt. The latter called for cutting off Egypt from its Arabic history and rejected the dominance and continuity of classical Arabic language. AI-Rafii contributed to the Revival by supporting a line ofthought that has not been favored by pro-Westernization governments, which made his legacy almost forgotten. Deriving his literature from the canon of Arabic language, culture, and history, al-Rafii produced a literature based on a revived version of classical Arabic literature, an accomplishment which makes him unique among modem Arab writers. -

Nordic Journal of African Studies 17(4): 269–287 (2008) The Public, The Private and The Sphere in- between: Re-Reading Najib Mahfuz's Children of Our Quarter* AFIS AYINDE OLADOSU University of Ibadan, Nigeria “Sovereigns are rulers over people, but it is the learned who rule over the sovereign” -Abul ’Aswad ABSTRACT This paper is hinged on the following proposition: that in no other region in Africa are the arguments about the role of the artist in the “public” sphere more intense as is the case in North Africa; that the problematic of what constitutes the “public” sphere in North Africa is circumscribed by the struggle for and the contest over “power”, “status” and “authority”; that the attempt by North African writers particularly Najib Mahfuz (d. 2006) to mirror the socio- political and cultural fissures and contradictions in the public sphere usually lead to conflict not only over what constitutes the “public sphere” and who governs it, but equally on how the “private” and the sphere “in-between”-in its quintessential slippery and highly charged textures- could be reclaimed for the “public good”. In grappling with the foregoing the paper rereads Najib Mahfuz’s Awlād Hāratinā (Children of our Quarter 1959). In reading for “meaning” and the “meaning of meaning” in the novel the paper pays attention to the socio- political and cultural “codes” provided by Najib Mahfuz even as it searches for possible theoretical insights that the works of Arab-African and Euro-American writers including Ibn Qayyim, Abdul Qāhir al-Jurjānī, Edward Said, Michel Foucault and Benhabib could yield in an excursus which probes into how the trialetic of “power”, “status” and “authority” continues to shape the “public” the “private” and the sphere “in-between” of the Egyptian society. -

Over the past decades, foreign language textbooks, as a key element in the teaching and learning process, covered culture differently qualitatively and quantitatively and the Arabic textbooks are no exception. This study aims to evaluate the presence of Arab culture in three main Arabic textbooks widely used in western institutions. The researcher applied a content analysis methodology to extract and examine the cultural aspects incorporated into these textbooks. The findings show a strong emphasis on the geographical, religious, and literary aspects and less focus on the societal and economic aspects and those related to the Arabs’ daily lifestyle and leisure. The results could be used to decide which textbooks are more suitable for a specific curriculum and to help improve future educational material’s content. -

American International Journal of Contemporary Research Vol. 5, No. 1; February 2015 An Exploration of the Rhetorical Devices in Leila Aboulela’s Novel “The Translator” Ms Enaam Hashim Albashir Teachers’ College Nile Valley University Sudan Dr. Ibrahim Mohamed Alfaki ELI, King Abdul-Aziz University Nile Valley University, Atbara, Sudan Jeddah, King Saudi Arabia Abstract This article attempts to explore Aboulela's literary style of writing through her novel The Translator. Leila Aboulela is an Egyptian-born Sudanese and British educated writer .The Translator is her first novel, published in 1999. The Translator is a story about a young Sudanese widow living in Scotland and her sprouting relationship with Islamic scholar Rae Isles. The research method adopted is a blend of narrative, rhetoric, and stylistic analyses. All these analytic techniques are from within the constructivism interpretive research paradigm. The analyses focus on the rhetorical devices which are used in the novel: The Translator. These devices are identified and discussed with examples from the novel. The findings indicate that: Aboulela’s style reflects rich vocabulary and an increasing flexibility of prose. Although the form of her writing is organized according to the formal patterns of prose , it has sense of rhythm , repetition and balance. These are not governed by a regularly sustained formal arrangement and the significant unit is the sentence. Keywords: Leila Aboulela, The Translator, rhetorical devices 1.
