EUROPEAN CULTURE FESTIVAL - a PART of EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM 2008 EUROPEAN CULTURE FESTIVAL Sept
EUROPEAN CULTURE FESTIVAL - A PART OF EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM 2008 EUROPEAN CULTURE FESTIVAL Sept. 12th – 21st 2008 A part of European Social Forum 2008 European Culture Festival (ECF) is a project that has functioned primarily as a tool within the framework of the European Social Forum (ESF) aiming to inspire, anchor and integrate different parts of the local cultural scene - to make possible a rich and diverse cultural programme to complement the forum. The project was initiated by Folkets Bio Malmö and immediately a creative collaboration was established with Folkets Hus och Parker to set an extensive film programme. All along more local culture actors has joined the project, which has grown into including all cultural fields, with focus remaining on the film programme. The result is both unique and outstanding, presenting the most extensive film programme in Malmö ever, and at the same time the biggest commitment to documentaries and film seminars ever. During the ESF approximately 400 cultural events will be presented, in which all artistic expressions are represented and there will be events for all ages. Add to that the forum seminar programme, with over 200 seminars, and we have for Malmö - a grand and very unique forum. ECF is founded on the cooperation between 200 organizations and actors from all over the world presenting events in 18 different locations in Malmö. The festival is based on extensive voluntary work. The programme includes 210 events within all cultural fields. We have largely concentrated on film screenings, art video screenings & exhibitions as well as seminars. Thematically we have our main TRANSITPASSENGERS & MAGIC LANTERN FOUNDATION focus on design, architecture and urban planning, queer, migration, labour rights, alternative movements and actions, local resistance, environment and feminism. -

2011 Annual Report from the President and Chair
2011 ANNUAL REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIR 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Buzzards Bay Coalition by a dedicated group of citizens spanning the Bay from Woods Hole to Westport. They were brought together by the loss of shellfish beds to contamination from sewage, by the ongoing threat of oil spills from barges, by toxic pollution in need of cleanup in New Bedford and at Otis, and by the spread of sprawl development and loss of open space throughout the watershed. In 1987, these problems were reaching an all-time peak and the Bay’s citizens came together to create a new future for our region’s environment. They believed that local citizens from all watershed towns should work together; for they had the most to gain from the Bay’s preservation and the most to lose by its degra- dation. They created the Buzzards Bay Coalition to carry forth that mission. So a sign was hung on a donated cadets room at Mass Maritime, a phone line estab- lished, and from the keys of a typewriter, the Bay Coalition began its work to build a citizens movement to clean up the Bay. The accomplishments in this 2011 Annual Report speak volumes about how far we’ve come as an organization and how the challenges facing our Bay have changed in the past quarter century. But one thing that remains as true today as it was in 1987 is that people are the engine of the Buzzards Bay Coalition. Our members and generous sup- porters who volunteer their time, money, and ideas are at the heart of our efforts and make our work possible. -

Anarchist Cybernetics Control and Communication in Radical Left Social Movements
ANARCHIST CYBERNETICS CONTROL AND COMMUNICATION IN RADICAL LEFT SOCIAL MOVEMENTS Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Thomas Swann MA (University of Glasgow), MA (Radboud University Nijmegen) School of Management University of Leicester September 2015 Thesis Abstract Anarchist Cybernetics Control and Communication in Radical Left Social Movements by Thomas Swann This thesis develops the concept of anarchist cybernetics in an attempt to elaborate an understanding of the participatory and democratic forms of organisation that have characterised radical left-wing social movements in recent years. Bringing together Stafford Beer’s organisational cybernetics and the organisational approaches of both classical and contemporary anarchism, an argument is made for the value of an anarchist cybernetic perspective that goes beyond the managerialism cybernetics has long been associated with. Drawing on theoretical reflection and an empirical strategy of participatory political philosophy, the thesis examines contemporary social movement organisational practices through two lenses: control and communication. Articulating control as self-organisation, in line with cybernetic thought, an argument is made for finding a balance between, on the one hand, strategic identity and cohesion and, on the other, tactical autonomy. While anarchist and radical left activism often privileges individual autonomy, it is suggested here that too much autonomy or tactical flexibility can be as damaging to a social movement organisation as over-centralisation. Turning to communication, the thesis looks at social media, the focus of another kind of hype in recent activism, and identifies both the potentials and the problems of using social media platforms in anarchist and radical left organisation. -
