In an apparently unprecedented chapter in the history of The United Church of Canada (“UCC”), the UCC is seeking to review the “effectiveness” of Reverend Gretta Vosper by examining her continuing affirmation with the questions of ordination. The questions of ordination focus on one’s belief in a Trinitarian conception of God, which includes the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. 2. It is important to note that no question about Rev. Vosper’s “effectiveness” has been raised by members of her congregation at West Hill United Church (“West Hill”). Indeed, the congregation at West Hill remains steadfastly in support of their chosen Minister and has submitted their own separate written submissions to this effect. 3. The reason why Rev. Vosper finds herself on the receiving end of

Moreland Pree is: Questions about the origin of the soul are of interest for at least two reasons. First, a developed version of substance dualism should include a treatment of the origin of the soul. Second, certain metaphysically and morally relevant phenomena­ twinning, cloning, and frozen embryos-have been presented as evidence against substance dualism. 1 In this article, my main objective is to analyze three views of the origin of the soul in order to provide a rebuttal to those who would use these phenomena as defeaters of substance dualism. Before diving into the issues, two preliminary points should be made. For one thing, justification for believing in substance dualism does not depend on developing a view about the origin of the soul. Why? Because the main issues that justify belief in substance dualism are quite independent of issues surrounding the soul's origin.

    The Origins of Christianity The Origins of Christianity and the Quest for the Historical Jesus Christ by Acharya S Introduction Around the world over the centuries, much has been written about religion, its meaning, its relevance and contribution to humanity. In the West particularly, sizable tomes have been composed speculating upon the nature and historical background of the main character of Western religions, Jesus Christ. Many have tried to dig into the precious few clues as to Jesus's identity and come up with a biographical sketch that either bolsters faith or reveals a more human side of this godman to which we can all relate. Obviously, considering the time and energy spent on them, the subjects of Christianity and its legendary founder are very important to the Western mind and culture. The Controversy Despite all of this literature continuously being cranked out and the significance of the issue, in the public at large there is a serious lack of formal and broad education regarding religion and mythology, and most individuals are highly uninformed in this area. Concerning the issue of Christianity, for example, the majority of people are taught in most schools and churches that Jesus Christ was an actual historical figure and that the only controversy regarding him is that some people accept him as the Son of God and the Messiah, while others do not. However, whereas this is the raging debate most evident in this field today, it is not the most important. Shocking as it may seem to the general populace, the most enduring and profound controversy in this subject is whether or not a person named Jesus Christ ever really existed.

    ABSTRACT AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES RAWLS, ORLANDO B.A. LANE COLLEGE, 2008 BES: THE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN WAY OF INITIATION Committee Chair: Daniel Black, Ph.D. Thesis dated May 2018 The purpose of this thesis is to explore Osiris’s role in the Book of the Dead1 to unearth the ancient Egyptian connotation for the term death. This study contends that western scholars have debased the arcane expression of death to literal interpretation. The basic function of ancient Egyptian scripture was to instruct man’s soul into deity—in the earthly realm. This investigation suggests the ancient Egyptian priesthood instituted this esoteric philosophy in scripture to adumbrate this grand idea death, which was Bes to be initiated. The third century A.D. witnessed the development of Christianity in northeast Africa and subsequent rise of the Western world, delivering the fatal blow to ancient theology and sending the art of esotericism into obscurity for centuries. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone would help to reestablish portions of this lost science. Thus, this inquiry aims to restore the sublime philosophy to the Book of the Dead so that its purpose is properly understood. 1 The indigenous term for the Book of the Dead is prt m hrw or Book of Coming Forth by Day. Om te beginnen verkrachten zij bijbelteksten en bijbelcommentaren: zij citeren onjuist, vertalen vals en leggen ongefundeerd verbanden tussen teksten uit verschillende tijden en verschillende gebieden. Verder zeggen ze, dat sinds hun god Jezus door de Romeinen is gedood, het Jodendom heeft afgedaan, en dat Joden alleen via het christendom weer in contact kunnen komen met de Eeuwige. Tenslotte doen zij het voorkomen, alsof een Jood gewoon Jood kan blijven als hij zich bekeert tot het christendom. Want, zo zeggen zij: “Jezus was de Messias van de Joden en dús kan een Jood hem volgen!” Waarom nu dit pamflet? Onze traditie zegt (Talmóed, tractaat Sanhedríen 37a): “Wie één joodse ziel redt, is alsof hij een hele wereld heeft gered!” Het joodse volk wordt wereldwijd verzwakt door de bekering tot het christendom van zoveel Joden.

    Theosophy A MODERN REVIVAL OF ANCIENT WISDOM by Alvin Boyd Kuhn 2 PREFACE Since this work was designed to be one of a series of studies in American religions, the treatment of the subject was consciously limited to those aspects of Theosophy which are in some manner distinctively related to America. This restriction has been difficult to enforce for the reason that, though officially born here, Theosophy has never since its inception had its headquarters on this continent. The springs of the movement have emanated from foreign sources and influences. Its prime inspiration has come from ancient Oriental cultures. America in this case has rather adopted an exotic cult than evolved it from the conditions of her native milieu. The main events in American Theosophic history have been mostly repercussions of events transpiring in English, Continental, or Indian Theosophy. It was thus virtually impossible to segregate American Theosophy from its connections with foreign leadership. But the attempt to do so has made it necessary to give meagre treatment to some of the major currents of world-wide Theosophic development. The book does not purport to be a complete history of Theosophy, but it is an attempt to present a unified picture of the movement in its larger aspects. No effort has been made to weigh the truth or falsity of Theosophic principles, but an effort has been made to understand their significance in relation to the historical situation and psychological disposition of those who have adopted it. The author wises to express his obligation to several persons without whose assistance the enterprise would have been more onerous and less successful.

He points his critical finger at many of the rigid dogmas as well as the literal interpretation of Biblical stories, which he asserts have created bigotry and mental servitude and stifled a real understanding of the Christian message. For Dr. Alvin Body Kuhn the true meaning of Christianity is to be found in its mystical teaching. He calls for a revival of the effort to discover the esoteric significance of the Christian heritage, to understand the allegorical method of Biblical interpretation, and to find behind the myths, dramas, symbols and allegories, the spiritual vision which they embody. Then there will occur, he says, a new birth for Christianity and a new enlightenment. This is a controversial work and not all readers will want to agree with the author's views on the historical aspects of Christian origins, although his statements are supported by a great deal of documentation and research. However, anyone who reads this book seriously will find himself re-examining his own beliefs and testing them at the bar of logic and reason. Dr. Kuhn was a scholar of comparative religion for several decades, and his works reflect the depth of study and research which he spent in this field. This book was his last, having been completed just before his death. His earlier books include The Lost Light, Who is This King of Glory? and The Lost Key to the Scriptures.
