Con la publicación de esta agenda —por cuarto año consecuti- vo—, en el INMUJERES nos hemos propuesto construir un espa- cio de conocimiento y divulgación de quiénes somos las mexi- canas, cómo hemos contribuido al desarrollo, la cultura y a la vida política y social en México. En esta ocasión hemos querido develar a las mujeres de la cien- cia y la tecnología; todas ellas generadoras de conocimiento científico y divulgadoras del mismo; con aportaciones importan- tes en un ámbito que desde lejos, parece estar sólo en manos de los hombres. Las científicas mexicanas han contribuido a las ciencias médi- cas, a la botánica, la biología y el medio ambiente; igualmen- te, documentamos las aportaciones a la nanotecnología, a los estudios del mar y del petróleo, así como a la astronomía, las matemáticas y la física. Algunas pioneras en su disciplina. Bravo ex Sánchez- Mejorada, 1973) has always been a difficult plant for which to find a taxonomical position. It is included in the tribe Pachycereeae Buxbaum, sub-tribe Pachycere- inae Buxbaum. However, its morphology and life cycle are distinct from those of all the other taxa included. Furthermore, it has a character which is unique in the whole Cactaceae family, that is, it bears an inflores- cence with genetically determinate growth, a decidu- ous one, which for this exclusive character deserves a specific term, that I define as “Tiponche” (pron. teep- ònche), from the vernacular name by which the species is known in its distribution area. The present paper describes for the first time the deciduous character of the inflorescence, and how this adaptation influences the dynamics of the life cycle of B. militaris. Furthermore, its functional significance is investigated, and related to a probable, sophisticated mutual symbiosis between the plant and a lepidopter- an of the Pyraloidea, of a yet undetermined species. This study is the result of bibliographic research and of observations carried out both in the wild, dur- ing a survey in March 1994 in a locality within the dis- tribution area of B. militaris, and with the dissection of authorized 1) samples collected on the same occasion. Bowlin1,3 ABSTRACT.—We studied the mating system and flower visitors of 2 threatened species of Sclerocactus (Cactaceae) in the Uintah Basin of eastern Utah—an area undergoing rapid energy development. We found that both S. wetlandicus and S. brevispinus are predominantly outcrossed and are essentially self-incompatible. A third presumptive taxon (unde- scribed; here called S. wetlandicus-var1) is fully self-compatible but cannot produce seeds unless the flowers are visited by pollinators. -

Chloroplast DNA sequences of the trnK intron, including the matK gene, were sequenced for 70 ingroup taxa and two outgroups from the Portulacaceae. In order to improve resolution in three major groups of Cactoideae, trnL-trnF sequences from members of these clades were added to a combined analysis. The three exemplars of Pereskia did not form a monophyletic group but a basal grade. The well-supported subfamilies Cactoideae and Opuntioideae and the genus Maihuenia formed a weakly supported clade sister to Pereskia. The parsimony analysis supported a sister group relationship of Maihuenia and Opuntioideae, although the likelihood analysis did not. Blossfeldia, a monotypic genus of morphologically modi®ed and ecologically specialized cacti, was identi®ed as the sister group to all other Cactoideae. -

Scientific note A new species of Cochemiea (Cactaceae, Cacteae) from Sinaloa, Mexico Una nueva especie de Cochemiea (Cactaceae, Cacteae) de Sinaloa, México Leccinum J. García Morales1,2 , Rodrigo González González2 , Jesús García Jiménez1 , Duilio Iamonico3,4 Abstract: Background and Aims: Cochemiea is a genus which currently comprises five species occurring in Mexico. It is morphologically characterized by cylin- drical decumbent to prostrate stems and by a long red-scarlet zygomorphic perianth, presumably specialized for hummingbird pollination. As part of the ongoing taxonomic studies on the North Mexican flora,a population discovered by Thomas Linzenin 2012 in central Sinaloa (Mexico), previously identified as Mammillaria sp., actually refers to a Cochemiea species and cannot be ascribed to any of the known species of that genus. As a conse- quence, we here propose to describe this population as a a new species for science. Methods: The work is based on field surveys (autumn 2018 and spring 2019) in central Sinaloa, examination of herbarium specimens, and analysis of relevant literature. Its conservation status was assessed following the guidelines of the IUCN; AOO and EOO were calculated with the program GeoCAT. Key results: Cochemiea thomasii is described and illustrated from Sinaloa. The new species is morphologically similar to C. halei from which it differs by the hanging stems, the larger conical tubercles, less numerous and shorter central spines, and the ovoid fruits. A diagnostic key of the known Cochemiea species is included. Conclusions: Cochemiea thomasii is endemic to the state of Sinaloa where it occupies a small area. On the basis of the criteria B2a (geographic range) and C (small population) of IUCN, the new species can be assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) or Vulnerable (VU). -

ABSTRACT Numerical classification of 16 taxa of Cactaceae was studied using combination of micromorphological characters of seeds (using L.M and SEM) and SDS- PAGE analysis. Aspects of seed micromorphology and seed protein variation as defined were recorded and scored comparatively for the OTU's into a data matrix. Phenetic relationships of these taxa were established based on UPGMA-clustering method by using Jaccard coefficient of the NTSYS-pc 2.2 program. The results were compatible with the traditional relationships of some taxa as the split-off of Opuntia humifusa and Astrophytum myriostigma, at separate lines, these results are compatible with their placement in tribes Opuntieae (subfamily Opuntioideae) and Cacteae (Subfamily cactoideae) respectively, at the time, the placement of three taxa Pseudorhipsalis ramulosa, Rhipsalis baccifera Accession 1, and Rhipsalis baccifera Accession 2 together, the clustering of Hylocereus triangularis and Neobuxbaumia euphorbioides together at a unique tribe Phyllocacteae. The findings contradict in a number of cases the traditional studies, as the grouping of Trichocereus vasquezii with the two represents of genus Parodia despite of their placement in different tribes. Zapotitlán Salinas, a community of the Tehuacán Valley, has been a site of interest for studying ecology of bird communities, but no previous studies addressing the relationship between humans and birds have been conducted in the area. Based on their local knowledge, people of the area shape the use and conservation of local bird fauna diversity, which is being maintained or lost under the influence of factors like commerce, tourism, agriculture intensification or abandonment, public policies for conservation, environmental changes, among others. This study aims to analyze the patterns of interactions between humans and birds in a context of high biocultural diversity with a long history and facing the environmental and social challenges of semiarid areas. Methods: Ecological sampling for documenting bird species richness was conducted from November 2015 to May 2017 in three transects that included agroforestry systems, forests, and fallow agricultural land. The method of counting by fixed radius points at 16 points within the study systems was used. Thirty in-depth interviews were conducted with local people who own land in the study areas by random sampling and choosing experts of Zapotitlán Salinas, Puebla, a semiarid natural protected area and, since 2019, recognized as Mixed World Heritage. -
