Machine Musicianship by Robert Rowe Robert Rowe is an influential figure in the world of interactive computer music. His book, Interactive Music Systems (MIT Press), which came with a CD-ROM of his Cypher soft- ware as well as a collection of other tools, was published in 1993. Mr. Rowe has come out with a new book, Machine Musicianship (MIT Press, ISBN 0–262–18206–8) (see Figure 6). It is ‘‘both a program- ming tutorial and an exploration of the foundational concepts of musical analysis, performance, and composi- tion. The theoretical foundations are derived from the fields of music the- ory, computer music, music cogni- tion, and artificial intelligence.’’ The author ‘‘explores the technology of implementing musical processes such as segmentation, pattern pro- cessing, and interactive improvisa- tion in computer programs.’’ The text is accompanied by a CD-ROM which contains working examples of the programs discussed, in either .or Max םםC Machine Musicianship is listed for US$ 47.95.
