OSWALD ROAD, OSWESTRY, 1878. PREFACE F all the works which have been written relating to the general or family history O of North Wales, none have been for centuries more esteemed than the History of the Gwydir Family. The Hon. Daines Barrington, in his preface to his first edition of the work, published in 1770, has well said, "The MS. hath, for above.a cent~ry, been so prized in North Wales, that many in those parts have thought it worth while to make fair and complete transcripts of it." Of these transcripts the earliest known to exist is one in the Library at Brogyntyn. It was probably written within 45 years of the death of the author; but besides that, it contains a great number of notes and additions of nearly the same date, which have never yet appeared in print. The History of the Gwydir Family has been thrice published. The first editiun, edited by the Hon. Daines Barrington, issued from the press in 1770. The second was published in Mr.

' PREFACE The author published a monograph on " St. Asaph Cathedral in 1896, which has formed the basis of the present handbook. The historical documents are few, and the surviving evidence of the past with regard to our smallest cathedral is scanty at the best. The chief books of reference have been Browne Willis's valuable "Survey of St. Asaph,'' published in 1720, also Edwards' edition of the same published at Wrexham in 1801, and the learned work by the Ven. Archdeacon Thomas, M.A., F.S.A., on " The Diocese of St. Asaph." " Storer's Cathedrals," pub- lished in i8ig, together with similar works, have also been consulted.

Greaves. The family were well-known members of the Caernarfonshire gentry. John Whitehead Greaves, J.E. Greaves1 father was involved in the exploitation of slate mines and quarries around Ffestiniog through his company, J.W. Greaves and Son, Porthmadog, in which he was followed by his son. John Greaves was a considerable landowner in his own right, with a large estate at Glangwna as well as property at Bron Eifion, Criccieth. From 1910 he also had considerable investments in Canadian developments. Before succeeding to the Lieutenancy on the death of the previous incumbent, the first Lord Penrhyn, in 1886, John Greaves had served as High Sheriff in both Merioneth and Caernarfonshire, and as Deputy Lieutenant for Merioneth. As Lord-Lieutenant of Caernarfonshire it was his duty to act for the Crown in the County, corresponding frequently with Buckingham Palace and representing the Crown on ceremonial occasions. His position also called for him to chair the Advisory Committee, which was responsible for the nomination and recommendation of Justices of the Peace.

  • “Merthyr Express” 1 January 1910
“Merthyr Express” 1 January 1910 Gellygaer School Managers: Dilapidated State of Fochriw School The monthly meeting of the Managers of the Gellygaer Council Schools was held at Hengoed on Tuesday evening. Mr. John Jones referred to the dilapidated state of the school at Fochriw. A terrific hurricane, he said, took away part of the roof - half a dozen slates or more - making a big hole; later on, the ceiling came down, so that snow and rain came through. This state of things had been allowed to continue for three weeks. The master had also called his attention to the state of the lobby where children had had to walk through up to two inches of water to get into the schoolroom. The master’s house was also in a wretched state: he had put pans in the bedroom to catch up the water coming through the roof. Also, on Sunday evenings, before he went Chapel, he had to take out the fire because of the smoky flue. Apart of this, the school wall had also fallen on to the public footpath. The Clerk said that this state of things had never been reported to him. Mr. D. Pugh Jones said he had no recollection of seeing a word about the master's house. It was all very well to make speeches and complaints in such a meeting as this, but why were the facts not communicated to him. Mr. W. C. Beddoe drew attention to the fact that the Managers had the power to spend a sum of money for small matters, up to £5, and he thought the local members should have undertaken on their responsibility to replace the slates.
