Students creating metal sculpture designs will complete their projects with blown glass using NASA space-age, glow-in-the-dark materials. At the end of the three-week session, student’s final projects will incorporate the skills acquired during their hands-on, rotating time, every two hours, in the studio areas described (class descriptions begin on page 3).

WEEKLY SESSIONS Monday, June 27th – Friday, August 12th (9:00am – 4:00pm daily: ages 9–17) (Lunch from 11:00am - 12:00 noon) Following our 3 week session, our summer workshops convert to a weekly schedule. This enables students to attend individual or collective weeks, depending on their family vacations or overnight camp schedules. After each week completed, students will advance to a higher technical skill level through the creation of functional, architectural forms and sculptures in the glass, metal & print studios. With emphasis on multi-media projects, the students will integrate numerous hands-on media such as metal sculpture, ceramics, animated filmmaking, stained glass, mosaics & paper engineering. These various studios will inspire creativity in young adults to create their own works of , boosting self-confidence & encouraging efficient problem-solving techniques. No two weeks are the same for returning students. Our one-of-a-kind, summer workshops are ideal for beginning to advanced students! Students will continuously be challenged to develop their skill sets according to individual levels of experience.

YOUNG ADULT CLASSES will continue in September for any students who want to resume their studies. These classes will be held on Saturdays.

ADULT CLASSES will begin on Tuesday evening, September 13th in the Glass, Print, Metal and Torchworking Studios. These classes can be scheduled daily Monday – Saturday from 10am – 9pm. 3 Glassblowing & Sculpture Glassblowing (three week workshop only) **NOTE: Each student MUST have UV-protected sunglasses with labeled sports strap Students are introduced to the fundamentals of European-style glassblowing and glass casting & sculpture from June 6th-June 24th. The workshop is designed to give students the opportunity to incorporate their glass designs into the sculpture created in the metal sculpture studio. The glass arena project will incorporate other open, working studios as well, such as TORCHWORKING, STAINED GLASS & MOSAICS, METAL SCULPTURE, PRINTMAKING, KINETIC SCULPTURE & ANIMATED FILMMAKING (all described below & are offered during both the 3-week session and weekly sessions). Stained Glass & Glass Mosaics New students will learn the basics of stained glass including proper cutting, grinding, , f oiling & finishing techniques. Learning to prepare p atterns using multicolored glass pieces, students will have the ability to create a variety of unique, imagined designs including brilliant stained glass panels. Returning students are challenged by complex, 3-dimensional forms and pattern- making in stained glass as well as glass mosaics, tabletops, sconces, lighted sculptures and wall hangings.

Scientific Glass Torchworking **NOTE: Each student MUST have UV-protected sunglasses with labeled sports strap Scientific Glass Torchworking using Morretti Glass Skills used in torchworking are the same as those employed in glassblowing but on a smaller scale. Torchworking is the process in which colored glass rod (called cane) is manipulated using the heat from a single table-top torch as in chemistry. Students will have a comprehensive introduction to sea creature and bead creation, learning everything from the basic methods of preparing small sculptures on steel rods (called mandrels) to creating brilliant, complex color patterns. Once students have learned the process, they can be provided with information to create a studio at home.

Metal Sculpture and Young adults will be introduced to the art of metal engineering and creative design through welding. This includes fabrication of armatures and sculpted structures using welding, cutting, bending, and the finishing of metal – utilizing the principals of kinetics and motion. Students are encouraged to combine the creations executed in glass and print into their metal sculpture projects. As students’ skill levels advance, they will begin to develop such projects as wall hangings, outdoor metal sculpture, creative light fixtures & glass and metal end tables. Printmaking 4 Screenprinting, Wood Block & Paper Marbling Traditional, flat-bed printing presses will be used to make one-of-a-kind images on , metal, and glass while learning “relief”, “intaglio” and additional image-making systems encompassed within the grand scope of printmaking. Students will learn an array of techniques, including copper , letterpress printing, and Italian-style paper marbling – and how to incorporate each into their own individual projects. Kinetic Sculpture Mobiles and kinetic art incorporate movement into the art of sculpture. Young adult students will have the chance to design and apply their prints onto moving sculptures. Kinetic sculptures will be designed from template forms the student has created after learning the techniques of balancing with a variety of materials they have chosen to work with in print, metal, and stained glass. Ceramic Sculpture Image Transfer & Design Techniques Using red clay, students will learn basic hand building techniques to form whimsical sculptures. Depending strictly on their creativity and problem-solving skills, students conceive, execute, and fire their own works of art that can be hung from the wall or placed in the yard or garden. Animated Filmmaking Using smartphones, students will learn to use printmaking tools and materials to develop a short animated film, combining print media with digital video. Young adults will make a series of images using background and figures that will be combined into an edited animated film. They will learn both the technical skills and aesthetic concepts necessary to develop a complete project. The film they create will be to take home as a memento of their summer adventure in filmmaking. Architectural Pop-Up Book Engineering Young adults can combine their printed images and creations from other studio areas to execute 3-D communicative forms. The result is a one-of-a-kind personalized hand-bound, pop-up book encompassing printmaking and techniques. Students are encouraged to follow their own creative vision but will be given the technical skills needed to ensure they gain a strong foundation in basic that will to constructing more advanced and challenging architectural and paper engineered pop-up books. Paper Maché Sculpture Students are taught the basics of designing simple structures and how to build on that knowledge by manipulating paper to create structural formations. Three-dimensional forms will be constructed as students learn to build life-size sculptural forms that will be theirs to take home at the end of their session. General Summer Workshop Information 5
