Phone: (843) 571-3264 Fax: (843) 402-0844 We refer to this Torah scroll as our “Holocaust Email: scroll”. It is on permanent loan to us from the Memorial [email protected] Scrolls Trust, an organization based in London that tracks Website: hundreds of similar scrolls that were recovered from Europe www.emanu-el.com after World War II. It is a remnant of the worst catastrophe Rabbi in Jewish history. Adam J. Rosenbaum Executive Director We don’t read from this scroll, as it is too damaged for ritual use. Typically, we Kelly Hampton remove it from its case each year only on the evening of Yom Kippur, when we assemble Religious School Principal all of the Torah scrolls for the Kol Nidre prayer. But in recent months, under the & Ritual Assistant leadership of Samuel Steinberg, we’ve recognized that our synagogue has done little in Daphne Hubara the more than 20 years we’ve had the scroll to recognize its background and importance. President We wish to remedy that, starting this month. Soon, our website will have a page Marsha Gewirtzman dedicated to the story of this scroll and the organization that has loaned it to us. President Elect Craig Browdy 2nd Vice President Furthermore, we have planned a special Shabbat to rededicate this scroll: Al Hawkins Saturday, April 27th. This Shabbat also is the last day of Passover, a day in which we say Treasurer the Yizkor service. We will recognize the scroll in several ways: Suzanne Lynch Financial Secretary We will talk briefly about the path the scroll took prior to arriving in our synagogue. Michael Schwartz We will hear reflections from our Kesher (grades 7-8) students who recently traveled Recording Secretary to Washington, DC, to tour the U.S. National Holocaust Museum. These students Elisheva Holub have been learning about the Holocaust throughout the school year. Corresponding Secretary We will send off several of our congregants heading to Israel several days afterward Roxann Spandorfer — a symbol of Jewish continuity in spite of attempts to destroy us. Parliamentarian We will hold the scroll during Yizkor, to mark the memory of the 6 million victims Gabe Bluestein of the Shoah. (In recognition of this special moment, we will ask everyone present to Past President Paul Lynch remain in the Sanctuary during Yizkor.) Board of Trustees I urge you to join us that Shabbat morning. We have been given the sacred Ellen Hoffman Alan Isaacson responsibility to protect this scroll, and it’s vital for all of our synagogue’s generations to Linda Krawcheck grasp its special place in our Synagogue. What is consuming for the staff and the board is the business of running our 5-Josif Tsveer synagogue – finances/fundraising, building and security, etc. As I reminisce, I am 5-Sy Baron reminded of the obvious – you can’t have one without the other. The business of the 5-Liam Solomon synagogue is what makes sure our programs, celebrations and worship possible. 5-Sunny Steinberg 5-Sarah Book The business of the synagogue belongs to all of us. We hope you have saved 6-Maurice Krawcheck Sunday, April 14th, to participate in our congregational meeting. Details to follow next month. This conference is a result of many women pulling together as a team. Joan Halushka and Linda Krawcheck are preparing fabulous (as usual) lunches for 35 people for Sunday and Monday. Thank you Joan and Linda so much. Brenda Lederman, as Local Arrangements Chair, has been wonderful getting volunteers and being a workhorse. Special thanks to you and your volunteers. Again, more next month. We do need ladies to serve on our Sisterhood board next year. Please move out of your comfort zone and help Sisterhood. You might find a fun and/or meaningful experience.
