P RESIDENT - M ARSHA G EWIRTZMAN

As I finish my first year as president of our congregation, I look back on what has provided the most “nachas.” High on that list is celebrating our young 1-Kathy Fischbein people, engaging the congregation, and the chance to recognize what we are so 2-Ike Ryba proud of – whether people or our Holocaust Torah (save the date – Saturday, April 4-Elisheva Holub 27th). What is consuming for the staff and the board is the business of running our 5-Josif Tsveer synagogue – finances/fundraising, building and security, etc. As I reminisce, I am 5-Sy Baron reminded of the obvious – you can’t have one without the other. The business of the 5-Liam Solomon synagogue is what makes sure our programs, celebrations and worship possible. 5-Sunny Steinberg 5-Sarah Book The business of the synagogue belongs to all of us. We hope you have saved 6-Maurice Krawcheck Sunday, April 14th, to participate in our congregational meeting. We will elect 6-Gretchen Weintraub officers and board members and update you on our finances, programs, building and 7-Alexis Veyber security. We will welcome Officer Matthew Tulla from the Charleston Police 7-Gabe Bluestein Department SWAT team, who has been an integral part of our security investments. 7-Danny Berlinsky 8-Ellen Nadler A preview of one conversation is the spring raffle – Pennies From Heaven. 8-Stephen Reichlyn As a reminder, dues cover 70% of our operating expense. We close the gap with 8-Neil Draisin fundraisers, donations and grants. The spring fundraiser is your chance to win 9-Phyllis Shorago something everyone can use – cash. How much? 9-Missy Gold 9-Richard Sorota 1st place- $10,000 9-Harriet Goldberg 2nd place - $2,500 10-Marsha Golod 3rd place - $1,000 10-Linda Wyland 10-Jane Mendelsohn How do you buy Pennies From Heaven raffle tickets? 10-Susan Chase Call or email the synagogue office with your order. 10-Bronislava Chernomordik Visit our synagogue website (www.emanu-el.com/form/springraffle ) 11-Karen Stark Say “yes” when a synagogue volunteer calls. 12-Kailey Allen 12-Ida Polyachenko The ticket prices are: 12-Charlie Hancock $99/ticket 13-Larry Freudenberg $500 for 6 tickets 13-Cliff Ryba $1000 for 14 tickets with a commemorative brick as a “thank you.” 13-Ann Ryba We will draw the winning raffle tickets Sunday, May 19th at the Spring Fling 14-Richard Star – our family-friendly Lag B’Omer celebration. 14-Slava Tsveer 14-Eric Oser See you on April 14th at our congregation meeting. S ISTERHOOD — G LORIA A DELSON

As you read this, I probably will be at the Southern Region Annual Conference, which our Sisterhood is hosting. Details to follow next month.

This conference is a result of many women pulling together as a team. Joan Halushka and Linda Krawcheck are preparing fabulous (as usual) lunches for 35 people for Sunday and Monday. Thank you Joan and Linda so much. Brenda Lederman, as Local Arrangements Chair, has been wonderful getting volunteers and being a workhorse. Special thanks to you and your volunteers. Again, more next month.

We do need ladies to serve on our Sisterhood board next year. Please move out of your comfort zone and help Sisterhood. You might find a fun and/or meaningful experience. Call me at 843-556-2965.

With love and wishing you a Zizzen Pesach.

Anshei Darom is the regional name of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC), of which Synagogue Emanuel-El is a member. The region consists of South Susan & Charles Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and the Altman eastern half of Texas including Dallas and Houston. Currently there are no member Rhonda & Charles clubs in Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. Richards

The FJMC is the International umbrella of Jewish Men’s Clubs in the United Jennifer & David States, Canada, and around the world. The newest Region is in Uganda, with five Mendelsohn

Men’s Clubs. Jill & Marc Levy FJMC’s mission is to involve Jewish men in Jewish life. This done through various programming that makes an impact on local congregations. A club may start a Dorothy & Edgar Weiss program and, through word of mouth, other clubs will start their own program. A Elisa & Gabe good example is the World-Wide Wrap — it was started in Charlotte, North Carolina, Bluestein and now it is done on Super Bowl Sunday around the world. Other programs include Lydia & Adam the Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Program, Hearing Men’s Voices, Keruv (outreach to Mandel intermarried couples), the Wellness Initiative for men, and many more. Andrew & Victoria Our Men’s Club goes to Bishop Gadsden during Hanukkah. Recently, the Club Yaitsky wanted to start a senior outreach, and elected to partner with the Jewish Federation Rebecca & Aaron and Sisterhood, which morphed into the Windows program with the Rabbi leading the Engel way. Last year, Men’s Club did a Lag B’ Omer picnic, and this year, it is a Synagogue Ruth & Edward fundraiser. Yes, Men’s Club does have a positive influence on our Synagogue. Baer

P ASSOVER 2 019

Healing Service Thursday, April 25th, 5:30PM Jewish healing services support people going through life transitions, those who may be grieving, people struggling with medical or health issues,or anyone who is interested in adding spirituality and healing into their prayers. Join us for this evening service with songs and readings that encourages healing together. Light refreshments to follow.

The Search for Chametz

The ceremony of the search for leavened bread, bedikat chametz, will take place this year on Thursday, March 18th, after sunset. The head of the family, equipped with a lighted candle, a feather and a wooden spoon, goes from room to room with other family members gathering little crumbs of bread as a symbolic expression that the house has been cleansed of all Chametz and has been prepared for the holidays. Chametz thus gathered is burned no later than 11:00AM, the following morning, Friday, April 19th. This can and should become a lovely family tradition, involving even the small children. The prayers accompanying the search and the burning of Chametz are found at the beginning of most Haggadahs.

Siyum Bekhorot Breaking the fast of the First-Born: Friday, April 19th at 7:00AM

On Friday morning, April 19th, following Minyan which begins at 7:00AM, all first-born males and females are urged to attend a SIYUM BEKHOROT, a special study session marking the completion of a portion of study. This observance originated in remembrance of the fact that when the first born of Egypt were slain during the Tenth Plague, the Jewish first-born were to fast on the day before Passover. This fast can, however, be replaced by a study session on the followed by a seudat mitzvah, a meal celebrating the performance of a mitzvah.

Mechirat Chametz

Since it is not practical to remove all “Chametz” food & utensils from our homes during Passover, Jewish law has provided for the sale of all Chametz for the duration of the Passover festival to a non-. Upon the conclusion of Passover, the Chametz reverts to the Jewish owner. Rabbi Rosenbaum will act as the agent to arrange this sale. In order to sell your Chametz, fill in the form below and send it to the Synagogue office. While there is no charge for the sale of Chametz, we encourage you to enclose a donation to Mazon, A Jewish Response to Hunger. We urge everyone to give Chai ($18) for life (or multiples thereof) but, of course, Mazon is grateful for all contributions. Please make checks payable to Mazon.

I, ______hereby authorize Rabbi Adam J. Rosenbaum to act as my agent to sell any Chametz that may be at my home, my place of business, or elsewhere prior to Pesach 5779 in accordance with the requirements and provisions of Jewish law.
