MEMORANDUM From: Head of Security, HMP Date: 5 December 2005 To: HM Prison Service Official Detainee Mr Othman (ie Abu Qatada) Mr Othman has expressed a view that he may be able to somehow pass a message through his solicitor Gareth Peirce that may be of assistance to the hostages currently being held in Iraq. This was made known to staff through Mr who acts as an interpreter for Mr Othman who does not appear to be able to speak much English. I interviewed both of the above detainees this evening in the company of SO one of the Unit Senior Officers and Principal Officer . Mr Othman (through his interpreter) stated that he does not seek any reward for which he sees this as a humanitarian act. If this is sanctioned he wishes to produce a video or audio message and he asked me what facilities we had. I explained that this was not something to be discussed until an answer in principle was received from HQ. I told him that I would inform our Headquarters of his offer. He reminded me that there was a deadline of this Thursday in relation to the hostages. Mr Othman was unable to contact his solicitor this evening. Mr will keep in touch with the Unit staff as and when contact has been made. -

RENDER UNTO RAWLS: LAW, GOSPEL, AND THE EVANGELICAL FALLACY Wayne R. Barnes∗ I. INTRODUCTION Many explicitly Christian voices inject themselves frequently and regularly into the current public policy and political discourse. Though not all, many of these Christian arguments proceed in something like the following manner. X is condemned (or required) by God, as revealed in the Bible. Therefore, the explicitly-required “Christian position” on X is for the law to prohibit or limit the activity (or require it), in accordance with the advocate’s interpretation of biblical ethical standards. To be clear, I mean to discuss only those scenarios where a Christian publicly identifies a position as being mandated by Christian morality or values --- i.e., where the public is given a message that some law or public policy is needed in order to comply with the Christian scriptures or God’s will. That is, in short, this article is about explicit political communications to the public in overt religious language of what Christianity supposedly requires for law and policy. As will be seen, these voices come quite famously from the Christian Religious Right, but they come from the Religious Left as well. Political philosophers (most famously John Rawls) have posited that pluralism and principles of liberal democracy strongly counsel against resort to such religious views in support of or against any law or public policy.1 That is, in opposition to this overt religious advocacy in the political realm (though, it should be noted, not necessarily taking a substantive position on the issues, per se) is the position of Rawlsian political liberalism, which states generally that, all things being equal, such inaccessible religious arguments should not be made, but rather arguments should only be made by resort to “public reason” which all find to be accessible.2 Christian political voices counter that this results in an intolerable stifling of their voice, of requiring that they “bracket” ∗ Professor, Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. -

Religion and Fake News: Faith-based Alternative Information Ecosystems in the U.S. and Europe Christopher Douglas | 6 January 2018 Summary he intersection of fake news and religion is marked by three asymmetries. First, fake news circulates more among Americans than Europeans. Second, fake news circulates T among conservatives more than liberals. Third, fake news for conservatives often feature religious themes. The origin of the fake news information-entertainment ecosystem lies largely in Christian fundamentalism’s cultivation of counter-expertise. The intersection of fake news and religion today is being exploited by Russia to subvert Western democracies and deepen social divisions. Western countries need to strengthen mainstream evidence-based journalism, incorporate conservative religious leaders into mainstream discussions, and detach high religiosity from fake news information ecosystems. More than 8 months after the official request which arose from an NCCI GHT workshop, at least 4 consultants have been working these weeks in Amman to I update the Interagency Consolidated Plan, and the contingency plans of L UNHCR, UNICEF and WHO. We welcome these initiatives showing that UN agencies are realizing what the H needs on the ground are. In addition, these sudden actions might denote that Agencies are expecting a further deterioration of the situation and would like to G improve their preparedness. Fair enough. I But we would have more welcomed a coordinated strategy instead of a competition between agencies. Moreover increased coordination would have certainly been more efficient. Indeed, the gathering and integrating of all H initiatives, ideas and efforts is needed to seek solutions to the problems posed Y by the difficulties of access or by the military approach of the “humanitarian intervention” which jeopardizes humanitarian organisations’ efforts. Bush in 2004, political pundits were quick to credit Christian evangelicals with providing the margin of victory over Democratic challenger John Kerry. An article in The New York Times touted presidential adviser Karl Rove as a genius for focusing the attention of his boss upon such “moral” issues as same-sex marriage and abortion, thereby attracting four million evangelicals to the polls who had sat out the 2000 election.1 The emphasis of the Democratic Party upon such matters as jobs in the economically-depressed state of 9a Ohio apparently was trumped by the emotionally-charged issues of gay marriage and abortion, which evangelicals perceived as more threatening to their way of life than an economy in decline. This reading of the election resulted in a series of jeremiads from the political left bemoaning the influence of Christians upon Christian Left: American politics. In an opinion piece for The New York Times, liberal economist Paul Krugman termed President Bush a radical who “wants to break down barriers between church and state.” In his influential book What’s The Matter with Kansas?, Thomas Frank speculated as to why working-class people in Kansas, a state with a progressive tradition, would allow themselves to be manipulated by evangelists and the Republican Party into voting against their own economic interests. -

“We've All To Grow Old”: Representations of Aging as Reflections of Cultural Change on the Celtic Tiger Irish Stage DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy In the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Christopher Austin Hill B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Theatre History, Literature, Criticism The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Chair: Dr. Joy Reilly Dr. Jennifer Schlueter Dr. Ray Cashman Copyright by Christopher Austin Hill 2013 Abstract This dissertation discusses the work of four Irish playwrights: Sebastian Barry, Marina Carr, Conor McPherson, and Elaine Murphy. Specifically, it investigates the inclusion, by these playwrights, of “elderly” characters in their plays written between 1995 and 2010—a period of economic and cultural change known as the “Celtic Tiger.” This study argues that the way that aging and senescence—defined jointly as the process of aging and as the state of being “aged”—are represented on stage reveals a broader cultural negotiation of “new” and “old” Ireland. Into their representations of “old” characters, the playwrights discussed here have embedded a reflection of destabilized cultural narratives, which resulted from intense societal change in Ireland. ii Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to my wife Allison and to my amazing children.
