En España constituye desde hace 11 años la primera causa de fallecimiento no natural (INE, 2017). En el presente estudio se exponen de forma exhaustiva los datos disponibles en cuanto al fenómeno en Andalucía. Para ello se han analizado los datos del Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) en el período comprendido entre 2008 y 2017. Entre las conclusiones, es señalable la diferencia entre provincias en cuanto a número de suicidios, entre sexos (siendo más frecuente en varones), así como la alta tasa de suicidas entre los mayores de 75 años. -

Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. “Consider the Source” A Resource Guide to Liberal, Conservative and Nonpartisan Periodicals 30 East Lake Street ∙ Chicago, IL 60601 HWC Library – Room 501 312.553.5760 ver heard the saying “consider the source” in response to something that was questioned? Well, the same advice applies to what you read – consider the source. When conducting research, bear in mind that periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) may have varying points-of-view, biases, and/or E political leanings. Here are some questions to ask when considering using a periodical source: Is there a bias in the publication or is it non-partisan? Who is the sponsor (publisher or benefactor) of the publication? What is the agenda of the sponsor – to simply share information or to influence social or political change? Some publications have specific political perspectives and outright state what they are, as in Dissent Magazine (self-described as “a magazine of the left”) or National Review’s boost of, “we give you the right view and back it up.” Still, there are other publications that do not clearly state their political leanings; but over time have been deemed as left- or right-leaning based on such factors as the points- of-view of their opinion columnists, the make-up of their editorial staff, and/or their endorsements of politicians. Many newspapers fall into this rather opaque category. A good rule of thumb to use in determining whether a publication is liberal or conservative has been provided by Media Research Center’s L. Brent Bozell III: “if the paper never met a conservative cause it didn’t like, it’s conservative, and if it never met a liberal cause it didn’t like, it’s liberal.” Outlined in the following pages is an annotated listing of publications that have been categorized as conservative, liberal, non-partisan and religious. -

April 13, 2021 Dear Members of Congress, We, the undersigned organizations representing millions of Americans nationwide highly concerned by our country’s unsustainable fiscal trajectory, write in support of the Maximizing America’s Prosperity (MAP) Act, to be introduced by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Sen. Mike Braun (R-Ind.). As we stare down a mounting national debt of over $28 trillion, the MAP Act presents a long-term solution to our ever-worsening spending patterns by implementing a Swiss-style debt brake that would prevent large budget deficits and increased national debt. Since the introduction of the MAP Act in the 116th Congress, our national debt has increased by more than 25 percent, totaling six trillion dollars higher than the $22 trillion we faced less than two years ago in July of 2019. Similarly, nearly 25 percent of all U.S. debt accumulated since the inception of our country has come since the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now more than ever, it is critical that legislators take a serious look at the fiscal situation we find ourselves in, with a budget deficit for Fiscal Year 2020 of $3.132 trillion and a projected share of the national debt held by the public of 102.3 percent of GDP. While markets continue to finance our debt in the current moment, the simple and unavoidable fact remains that our country is not immune from the basic economics of massive debt, that history tells us leads to inevitable crisis. Increased levels of debt even before a resulting crisis slows economic activity -- a phenomenon referred to as “debt drag” -- which especially as we seek recovery from COVID-19 lockdowns, our nation cannot afford. -

The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy Dr. Valerie Scatamburlo-D'Annibale University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada Abstract This article explores how Donald Trump capitalized on the right's decades-long, carefully choreographed and well-financed campaign against political correctness in relation to the broader strategy of 'cultural conservatism.' It provides an historical overview of various iterations of this campaign, discusses the mainstream media's complicity in promulgating conservative talking points about higher education at the height of the 1990s 'culture wars,' examines the reconfigured anti- PC/pro-free speech crusade of recent years, its contemporary currency in the Trump era and the implications for academia and educational policy. Keywords: political correctness, culture wars, free speech, cultural conservatism, critical pedagogy Introduction More than two years after Donald Trump's ascendancy to the White House, post-mortems of the 2016 American election continue to explore the factors that propelled him to office. Some have pointed to the spread of right-wing populism in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis that culminated in Brexit in Europe and Trump's victory (Kagarlitsky, 2017; Tufts & Thomas, 2017) while Fuchs (2018) lays bare the deleterious role of social media in facilitating the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. and elsewhere. “Among college-age youth (20–24 years) in the United States, suicide is the third leading cause of death.”1 Our youth today struggle with emotional and mental issues which are sometimes manifested in self-destructive behaviors or even attempts at suicide. Thus, I believe the Spanish film “Mar Adentro” (The Sea Inside) is powerful and relevant to our college-aged students. It relates the true story of Ramón Sampedro who is paralyzed in a diving accident and spends the next twenty-nine years of his life fighting for the legal right to carry out an assisted suicide. He loses the legal battle, but does find someone to help him end his life. He sips potassium cyanide from a straw as this person films his death. This event, which occurs in Galicia, Spain in 1998, sparks a national debate in Spain about the legality and justification of euthanasia, assisted suicide, and suicide in general. In the aftermath of Sampedro’s death, the filming of which was exposed to the public, his suicide assistant (a close female friend) is arrested, then released, and a popular campaign erupts in Spain with many claiming to be “the one” who helped him die. Even politicians show their support for his decision by signing a document stating they helped Sampedro to die.2 I use this film in a 300-level course called “Hispanic Culture through the Media Arts”. One of my objectives in the course is to begin to develop the skill of comprehending a wide variety of topics in films. This movie certainly helps in that regard. -

April 2, 2020 Support the Pandemic Healthcare Access Act, H.R. 6338 and S. 3546 On behalf of FreedomWorks’ activist community, I urge you to contact your representative and senators and ask them to cosponsor the Pandemic Healthcare Access Act, H.R. 6338 and S. 3546, introduced in the House by Reps. Ted Budd (R-N.C.) and Chip Roy (R-Texas) and in the Senate by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). The Pandemic Healthcare Access Act is a simple, common-sense piece of legislation focused on giving all Americans, regardless of their insurance plan, access to a safe vehicle to save their own money tax-free for healthcare expenditures. Especially in a time of crisis such as this, it is crucial that we ensure Americans have easy access to healthcare, and expanding the use of health savings accounts (HSAs) is a straightforward method towards that end. HSAs are a special type of savings account backed by the federal government that allow qualified individuals to set aside money pre-tax to pay for qualified medical services. These types of accounts are an excellent way to grant individuals greater flexibility in managing their healthcare needs. Unfortunately, only individuals with High Deductible Health Plans are allowed to use HSAs under current law, severely limiting the availability of these accounts. Americans should have the freedom to choose how they manage their healthcare. Expanding HSAs is just one way to grant individuals more choice. Now more than ever, as Americans are dealing with the realities of the novel coronavirus, there is a desire for people to know that they have control and means by which to address healthcare needs that may arise. -
The Second Tea Party-Freedomworks Survey Report

Rapoport Introduction Since our first survey of FreedomWorks subscribers in December 2011, a lot has happened: the 2012 Republican nomination contests, the 2012 presidential and Congressional elections, continuing debates over the budget, Obamacare, and immigration, and the creation of a Republican Party Growth and Opportunity Project (GOP). In all of these, the Tea Party has played an important role. Tea Party-backed candidates won Republican nominations in contested primaries in Arizona, Indiana, Texas and Missouri, and two of the four won elections. Even though Romney was not a Tea Party favorite (see the first report), the movement pushed him and other Republican Congressional/Senatorial candidates (e.g., Orin Hatch) to engage the Tea Party agenda even when they had not done so before. In this report, we will focus on the role of FreedomWorks subscribers in the 2012 nomination and general election campaigns. We’ll also discuss their role in—and view of—the Republican Party as we move forward to 2014 and 2016. This is the first of multiple reports on the March-June 2013 survey, which re-interviewed 2,613 FreedomWorks subscribers who also filled out the December 2011 survey. Key findings: Rallying around Romney (pp. 3-4) Between the 2011 and 2013 surveys, Romney’s evaluations went up significantly from 2:1 positive to 4:1 positive surveys. By the end of the nomination process Romney and Santorum had become the two top nomination choices but neither received over a quarter of the sample’s support. -

The U.S. role in the world can be viewed as establishing the overall context or framework for U.S. policymakers for developing, implementing, and measuring the success of U.S. policies and actions on specific international issues, and for foreign countries or other observers for interpreting and understanding U.S. actions on the world stage.
