POLITICS/GOVERNMENT

Local Contact local government offices for internship, volunteering, and job shadowing opportunities, which will vary by state, city, county, borough and municipality. This includes the office of the mayor, city councilmen and women, law enforcement, controllers and public attorneys. If no work opportunities are available, you could request an information interview to learn more about your public leaders.

State Most governors, state senators, representatives, assemblymen, attorney, officials, etc. have opportunities for you to volunteer, intern, or job-shadow in the state capital or at their district office. You can find these internships by visiting your state website, or the website of the governing body (e.g. General Assembly of Maryland), or the website of your public official (e.g. State Representative Rob Kauffman). If no internships are available, you may consider briefly meeting with a member of their staff to ask them what it is like to work in state government or to discuss legislation or policy that is important to you.
