Becoming Owners: African American Property Ownership, Berean Building And Loan, And The City Of Philadelphia, 1890 To 1920 Abstract This dissertation traces the contours of African American property ownership in in the city, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. How did a moment of political deterioration during the 1890s foster African- American movements for civic accountability and political mobilization in the Quaker City? This study connects material achievement and the pursuit of property ownership among African Americans to the growth of church-based, minister-led, and property-focused associations. Historians have not often considered the connection between ostensibly moral-missioned institutions, the property they and their communities owned, and later political expressions. By raising and contextualizing a heretofore unexamined set of nearly 280 mortgage, census and directory records related to one-such building and loan association, Berean Building and Loan, this study argues that black property ownership functioned as a moral and economic lever in the view of the race’s leaders. Once a significant number of these associations formed, a “determined” middle class of black Philadelphians, armed with economic and cultural success, argued for political rights and representation they had previously been denied. In 1888, faced with an inability to otherwise achieve suitable housing for its members, the black-led Berean Presbyterian Church formed a building and loan association. Matthew Anderson, the church and association’s leader, claimed that participation in the association and ownership of property boosted the civic capacity and respectability of its members. Berean Building and Loan epitomized the material and moral movement that contemporary leader Booker T. Washington hoped to see growing among the race. Washington’s “cast down your bucket” sensation of a speech in 1895 seemed to mark the way forward for African Americans in the south and nationally. The promise of individual and group transformation accompanying property and material success formed a central pillar of Washington’s ethos and his National Negro Business League. Anderson’s efforts in Philadelphia provide a unique contrast to Washington’s and point to the intellectual continuity of ideas as regards property. As Berean and similar mutual aid associations and institutions formed and flourished in Philadelphia in the early 20th century, Washington’s disavowal of politics could not hold captive the minds of blacks in the city.     Samoan Submission Machines: Grappling with Representations of Samoan Identity in Professional Wrestling Theo Plothe1 Savannah State University [email protected] Amongst the myriad of characters to step foot in the squared circle, perhaps no ethnic group has been as celebrated or marginalized as the Samoans who have made their names in professional wrestling. The discussion of Samoan identity in the context of sport has examined Maori identity and masculinity in New Zealand, among other topics, but there has yet to be work which considers Samoans within professional wrestling. This research investigates Samoan identity through a content analysis of televised wrestling matches. This research identifies six primary stereotypes under which Samoan identity is portrayed. These portrayals of Samoan characters, I argue, flatten the representation of this ethnic group within wrestling and culture at large. This research investigates the identity of Samoans within professional wrestling, and the different ways they are constructed and presented to audiences. “Gimmicks,” characters portrayed by a wrestler “resulting in the sum of fictional elements, attire and wrestling ability” (Oliva and Calleja 3) utilized by Samoans have run the gamut from the wild uncivilized savage, to the sumo (both in villainous Japanese and comically absurd iterations), to the ultra-cool mogul who wears silk shirts and fancy shoes. Their ability to cut promos, an important facet of the modern gimmick allowing wrestlers to address their opponents and storylines, varies widely as well, but all lie within their Samoan identity.

They were truly days of stress and storm." This reminiscence of Chris J. Perry provides a significant personal insight into the founding of the Philadelphia Tribune, the oldest continuously circulating black newspaper in the United States.' Most people would agree that having survived for over one hundred years, without missing an issue, is enough reason for recognition. But in examining the role of the newspaper in the history, development, and education of the Philadelphia black community, we are able to describe and fully document why the paper was so successful, and how a black newspaper served and functioned in one of the largest urban black communities in the country during the first four decades of the twentieth century. According to various biographical sketches, Christopher James Per- ry, Sr., was born in 1854 in Baltimore, Maryland, and migrated to Philadelphia in 1873. The reasons for Perry's migration have not been recorded. 2 Initially, Perry attended night schools in the city and worked at a variety of jobs.

    Finding and Using African American Newspapers Timothy N. Pinnick [email protected] http://blackcoalminerheritage.net/ INTRODUCTION African American researchers will find black newspapers an extremely valuable part of their search strategy. Although mainstream newspapers should always be consulted, African American newspapers will provide nuggets of information that can be found nowhere else. Although the first African American newspaper was established in 1827, it is in the post Civil War period that the black press experienced tremendous growth. Hundreds of newspapers appeared to quench the thirst for knowledge in the newly freed slaves, and to provide an accurate and positive image of the race. Clint C. Wilson took the incomplete manuscript of the foremost historian of the African American press, Armistead Pride and produced A History of the Black Press in 1997. It is a great source of information on black newspapers. Another worthwhile source can be found online at the public television website of PBS. They produced the documentary film, “The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords” in 1999, and their website is rich in reference material. http://www.pbs.org/blackpress/index.html VALUE OF BLACK NEWSPAPERS Aside from the most obvious benefit of locating obituaries, researchers can discover: an exact or nearly exact event date (birth, death, or marriage) of an ancestor, therefore enhancing the odds of a successful outcome when the eventual request for the vital record is made. Few people know much, ifanything,aboutmost of these colonies because little was recorded in the local media about them at the time. Nicodemus is the one exception. In 1998 it became a National Historic Site thus receiving much attention from the media. Because scholarly research about these colonies is so scant it is important to study them from a geographic perspective. This paper attempts to do that by answering the following questions: 1) Where were Kansas African American colonies located between 1857 and 1885?; 2) Why did African Americans want to relocate from their homes in the south to Kansas?; 3) What was the state of nativity of the Kansas African American colonist in specific colonies?; 4) Why did most Kansas African American colonies disappear? Conditions in the south and reasons to emigrate The Civil War, although a war of unification, became a war to free slaves with the Emancipation Proclamation ofJanuary 1, 1863. 1 General Robert E.
