Allyssa Golden ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS 373 Editorial: Grappling with Boundaries of Legitimacy NORMA JONES In the previous editorial, I wrote about how and why popular culture scholars are different. It is no surprise that we cross disciplinary silos and examine issues that may be traditionally outside of the boundaries set by the ivory tower. This, then, begs the following questions: what the boundaries around which we should study and how we should study those issues? For me, it is in these uncertain spaces that we, as popular culture scholars, should have the most impact. These, perhaps, uncomfortable spaces are our wheelhouses and our playgrounds. In them, we can help to break down some traditional silos that divide us, artificially. It is up to us to help use the tools of popular culture to not only understand elements of humanity, but also potentially help address issues that plague us. It is up to us to break the walls that silence. In other words, it is up to us to grapple with the boundaries of legitimacy. About this Issue You might notice that we have changed our format this year. Instead of a double issue presented during at the annual conference Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association conference, we will be releasing issues twice a year. About the Special Edition - Professional Wrestling The concept of grappling with legitimacy is especially important when considering our special edition. When Garret Castleberry approached me about creating a special edition on professional wrestling, as a field of interdisciplinary study, I had these very thoughts of the boundaries of legitimacy and appropriateness in mind. Just like our previous, award- winning, special issue regarding popular culture and autoethnography, we have an opportunity run to (as Bob Batchelor put it) a new space in popular culture studies. We

Canter* The mechanism for selecting the President of the United States, the Electoral College, causes outcomes that weaken American democracy and that the delegates at the Constitu- tional Convention never intended. The core selection process described in Article II, Section 1 was hastily drawn in the final days of the Convention based on compromises made originally to benefit slave-owning states and states with smaller populations. The system was also drafted to have electors deliberate and then choose the President in an age when travel and news took weeks or longer to cross the new country. In the four decades after ratification, the Electoral College was modified further to reach its current form, which includes most states using a winner-take-all method to allocate electors. The original needs this system was designed to address have now disappeared. But the persistence of these Electoral College mechanisms still causes severe unanticipated problems, including (1) con- tradictions between the electoral vote winner and national popular vote winner, (2) a “battleground state” phenomenon where all but a handful of states are safe for one political party or the other, (3) representational and policy benefits that citizens in only some states receive, (4) a decrease in the political power of non-battleground demographic groups, and (5) vulnerability of elections to interference. These outcomes will not go away without intervention.

    The Climb of Controversial Film Content by Ashley Haygood Submitted to the Department of Communication Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Communication at Liberty University May 2007 Film Content ii Abstract This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry.     Vol. 3, no. 2 (2013), 207-221 | URN:NBN:NL:UI:10-1-114482 The Atlantic Return and the Payback of Evangelization VALENTINA NAPOLITANO* Abstract This article explores Catholic, transnational Latin American migration to Rome as a gendered and ethnicized Atlantic Return, which is figured as a source of ‘new blood’ that fortifies the Catholic Church but which also profoundly unset- tles it. I analyze this Atlantic Return as an angle on the affective force of his- tory in critical relation to two main sources: Diego Von Vacano’s reading of the work of Bartolomeo de las Casas, a 16th-century Spanish Dominican friar; and to Nelson Maldonado-Torres’ notion of the ‘coloniality of being’ which he suggests has operated in Atlantic relations as enduring and present forms of racial de-humanization. In his view this latter can be counterbalanced by embracing an economy of the gift understood as gendered. However, I argue that in the light of a contemporary payback of evangelization related to the original ‘gift of faith’ to the Americas, this economy of the gift is less liberatory than Maldonado-Torres imagines, and instead part of a polyfaceted reproduc- tion of a postsecular neoliberal affective, and gendered labour regime.     Vice is doing a series of documentaries about the heavier aspects of the history of Pro Wrestling called The Dark Side of the Ring. These docs are taking a look at tragedies in the wrestling, and there are quite a few to choose from. The first one they released, and one of the finest true crime docs if you like the human side instead of the hard core investigative side, is about Bruiser Brody. And thus, having finished watching it, I realized I’d never done an issue dedicated to him. This issue, more than any other Claims Department I’ve ever done, will be the story of what it means to be a genius, to live in a world that has rules that are not those of the outside world. This is a story of an American who was a giant star in Japan, partly because he had so much trouble getting along with promoters in the US. This issue tells the story of a man who was an incredibly brawler, who bled in so many matches, who helped re-define what brawling was in an era when wrestling was completely being redefined. He was also an amazing wres- tler, could go on the ground , work a match that would make you believe he was a former Olympian. In short, it is the story of a man who was a master of his craft, and a man who knew he was a master of his craft. Yes, it has a tragic ending. In other news, I’m happy to report that the Boys are turning 4 shortly, and that’s a good thing! JP is reading.

    Laws, Beliefs, and Backlash1 Brian Wheaton2 Harvard University November 12, 2020 Most Recent Version Available at: https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/wheaton/files/backlash.pdf Abstract: Do laws affect the beliefs and attitudes held by the public? I set up a model wherein families care about their children's beliefs, which are shaped by a combination of parental actions and the law set by society. These straightforward assumptions are sufficient to generate systematic backlash against laws – individuals move in the opposite direction of the law in an attempt to preserve the values which are important to them and are placed under threat by the law. Next, I turn to survey data from the ANES to test the implications of the model. I first focus in- depth on one specific case: the state Equal Rights Amendments (ERAs), which aimed to legislate gender equality. Using a dynamic difference-in-differences identification strategy, I find robust evidence that ERA passage leads to a sharp backlash amongst men in particular, who exhibit sharply more negative attitudes toward male/female equality. This shift translates into a significant increase in Republican vote share, worsened material outcomes for women, and increased marital strife. I also test and confirm the other implications of the model – such as the fact that the backlash is passed on to the next generation and that it endures more strongly in ideologically-homogeneous communities. Next, I provide evidence against a variety of alternative mechanisms. And finally, stepping back from the ERAs, I show that virtually every major U.S. social policy law of the past half-century has induced significant backlash.
