This production of and takes place in a contemporary, but non- temporally specific world. Think of it as an imagined dystopian near future, a heightened present reality; the day after the day after tomorrow.

The world of is a dangerous one. Violence in the streets of Verona has become commonplace, causing the Prince to invoke increasingly draconian measures, including the confiscation of all firearms. However, as in our world today, the absence of guns does not mean the end of violence and mayhem. With fists and steel, blood still runs in the street. At the onset of the story, the Prince has gone so far as to decree that any further violence will be punished by death. A dark undercurrent of madness runs through this world, a feeling that civilization is very close to running off the rails.

Within this world, the star-crossed lovers meet one another, and their destiny. The story is driven forward by their passion – even obsession – with one another, and their naïve willingness to sacrifice all for love.

In a production like this one, student learning happens in many different areas. First and foremost is Shakespeare’s language itself. The power of enactment brings a different understanding of the text, a robust connection with the language that is different from that encountered in a classroom setting. The experience of memorization – a learning tool currently out of fashion in education – allows students to internalize some of the most beautiful and powerful language ever written. Once memorized, this language becomes part of a rich inner landscape that will be a part of them forever.

Because this production is being performed without microphones, students have learned new techniques of vocal support and projection. In turn, working without artificial enhancement gives students the opportunity to fill the space, not only with the voice, but also with a performance that matches the scope and majesty of Shakespeare’s language.

Beyond the language, the physical aspect of the production enhances student learning. Working with a professional fight choreographer, students have discovered a new level of kinesthetic learning, connecting words to action. The elements of design including set, costume, lighting and sound come together to create a unified artistic vision. This enables students to grow in appreciation of the different aspects of theatre art and craft that come together with the actors to tell a powerful story.
