Reading List for the M.A. and Preliminary Examinations German Revised 4/08

General Description Scope of this list This reading list is the basis for the departmental Master's (oral) and Preliminary (written and oral) Examinations and covers the general areas of and culture, synchronic and diachronic linguistics, and applied linguistics and pedagogy. The literary/cultural area is divided into four periods: I -- Medieval, II -- through , III -- Enlightenment through , and IV -- to the Present. Each section of the list contains texts which you are expected to read in their entirety, unless otherwise specified. At the end of each literary/cultural period are a number of recommended reference works which you are encouraged to consult to help situate the specific texts you read into the broader cultural and historical context. Further, here are standard edited reference works for the whole of : Bahr (ed.), Geschichte der deutschen Literatur De Boor & Newald (eds.), Geschichte der deutschen Literatur Gilman & Zipes, Yale Companion to Jewish Writing and Thought in German Culture (1096-1996) Glaser (ed.), Deutsche Literatur: Eine Sozialgeschichte Grimminger (ed.), Hansers Sozialgeschichte der deutschen Literatur Zmegac (ed.), Geschichte der deutschen Literatur For German , the standard anthology is Echtermeyer's Deutsche Gedichte; this will serve as the source from which selections for Periods 3 and 4 will be made. Copies are available for checkout from the Graduate Coordinator. For Period 2, a copy packet will be available; for Period 1, be sure to check edition information. Note, too, that a great number of these texts are available for free online at , Project Gutenberg-De, which also has a large corpus for sale on DVD at a very reasonable price -- a real resource for your future teaching needs, and convenient.

This list and departmental examination requirements The list requirements for the Master's Examination (oral) are as follows: If your declared area of specialization is literature/culture, you are responsible for • 2 out of 4 literary/cultural periods If your declared area of specialization is linguistics, you are responsible for • 2 out of 3 linguistic areas *It is possible to combine any two areas, with permission of the Graduate Studies Chair.

The list requirements for the Preliminary Examination (written and oral) are as follows: If your declared area of specialization is literature/culture, you are responsible for • 3 out of 4 literary/cultural periods • 2 out of 3 linguistic areas, which MUST include applied ling./pedagogy If your declared area of specialization is linguistics, you are responsible for • 2 out of 4 literary/cultural periods • all 3 linguistic areas By the first day of the semester in which you take the exam, you will be required to declare your specialization to the Chair of the Graduate Studies Committee and to provide him/her with a list of texts /areas which you have selected from those parts of the literature and applied linguistics lists where multiple options are given, including specific poems (literature) and areas of focus (applied linguistics). Literature/Culture -- Third Period: Enlightenment through Realism

The reading list for the period from the Enlightenment to the late nineteenth century is organized according to conventional used in literary histories, not necessarily in terms of national or political histories. As you work your way through the texts, please remain aware that they come from very different political and cultural spheres, and as texts representing "periods," they are associated principally in terms of style and aesthetic ideologies which might not fit the sociopolitical contexts of their readers at all. Over the six individual periods, choose at least 20 works, with approximately equal distributions among and periods. In some cases, a choice is indicated by "or," indicating that you may not use both of the texts. Note that many of the essays are very very short. Thus the requirement of 20 works factors in the expectation that some of these short non-fictional prose texts will be included among the 20. It also is expected that you will offer at least one Bildungsroman (marked with •), one Novelle, and one other extended prose piece, such as a novel (either epistolary, like Werther or Sternheim), or a more popular form like a travelogue, woman's novel, or the like.
