BARSC Championships 2011 As announced, the 2011 championship will be held in Champoluc between 2nd and 7th January 2011. Overview Champoluc is in the Monterosa area, above the Aosta valley. The town has many hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations, apartments, shops and bars. It also has an outdoor ice rink, Bank, trauma centre and extensive outdoor parking. The surrounding villages have more accommodation, often at a lower cost than those in Champoluc itself. The town of Aosta is about 50-60 minutes away. The skiing is extensive with access to the full Montertrosa ski area which includes the resorts of Gressoney and Alagna, all linked from Champoluc. There is a separate set of slopes in Antagnod, 10 minutes down the valley. Accommodation: The Organising Committee have been working with Ski2 (contact Simon Brown, [email protected] web site www.ski-2.com As Ski2 are a major player in the resort, Simon will be able to arrange advantageous deals for accommodation, transfer and lift passes; clubs and teams are invited to contact Ski2 to identify the options they can offer. Travel: Champoluc is about 1,000 km from Calais via Rheims and Chamonix, tolls for a car including the Mont Bland Tunnel are currently 106.50€. It is accessible from Turin, Milan and Geneva. Ski2 can arrange inclusive travel packages, alternatively they can arrange transfers. Race Office and Team Captains meeting: The Race Office will be in the Tourist Office and the Team Captains meeting will be held in the conference room of the Relais des Glaciers Hotel about 100 meters away. Dates: The current draft programme is for FIS junior races (TCM 2nd January) followed by Children with both super Gs on Wednesday 5th. We have spoken to the organisers of the Anglo Scottish and we hope that they will be able to organise their races on 2nd and 3rd January. Training and Race Pistes: Training pistes will be made available to clubs and training groups for the period Sunday, 2 January 2011 to Friday, 7 January 2011 in Champoluc and Antagnod, the detail to be arranged directly and exclusively between Ski 2, Val D’Ayas Ski Club and participating clubs. Outside these dates, clubs and training groups may arrangements direct with Ski 2 at a cost to be negotiated between them. The resort will close off two pistes, Vascotcha in Antagnod, FIS homologated for DH, SG, GS and Sl, and Ostafa II, in Champoluc and FISI homologated for GS and Sl, for training and racing. All FIS races and the Ch SG will be run on Vascotcha, there is a training area above (except on SG day) and two areas for warm up. It is hoped to organise and run a Combi race (the Italians call them Gymkhanas) on Wednesday but this had not been finalised as it will have to be built first. Ski2 have offered to sponsor it. Children technical will run on Ostafa II and Ostafa I will be available for warm up. Piste access: Antagnod has a large restaurant at the bottom of the piste and one chair lift that serves Vascotcha, another red and two blue pistes. Ostafa II is served by two gondolas from the village, turn around for the race piste is about 20 minutes. There are two restaurants in the area of the race pistes. Spectator access is difficult for non skiers as there is no pedestrian access. Skier access is via Ostafa II, the race piste, and all coaches and spectators using this would have to be in place before the race started, or alternatively via Ostafa 1. Lift passes: we are still negotiating with the resort on ticket prices. 2009/2010 rates are attached. The best deal will be when bought through a travel agent or hotel when they will be substantially cheaper. Based on 2009 the Junior rates will be for people born after 01/01/96 and senior before 31/12/50. In resort transport: groups will need to arrange transport between Champoluc and Antagnod. This could be club or private transport or hotel based or arranged with Ski2. Usually ski-resorts cover a surface that encompasses more than one side of a mountain (or more than one valley); for this reason, the meteorological conditions may vary locally and rapid decisions have to be taken in order to ensure the safety of the skiers. Any intervention on the structure of the resort may entail cascade events and other critical situations. For example, a temporary closure of a lift may create large queues in other parts of the ski-area. In the same way, a closure of a ski-slope might engender overcrowding in other ski runs. All these situations are potential sources of risk. We propose an approach to the study of criticalities in ski-resorts by means of transportation network approaches based on the ability of the skiers and the grade of the ski run. An example is made on the Antagnod branch of MonteRosaSki resort. The effects of a sudden interruption of part of it, i.e., ski- slope closure or lift temporary interruption, are simulated. Snow gliding is a key factor for snow glide avalanche formation and soil erosion. This study considers atmospheric and snow variables, vegetation characteristics, and soil properties, and determines their relevance for snow gliding at a test site (Wildkogel, Upper Pinzgau, Austria) during winter 2014/15. The time-dependent data were collected at a high temporal resolution. In addition to conventional sensors a ‘snow melt analyzer’ was used. The analysis shows that the soil temperature 10 cm below the surface, the phytomass of mosses, the liquid water content in 15 the snowpack, and the static friction coefficient of the glide shoes had significant influence on snow gliding during the whole winter. In the first period (October to January) the soil moisture at the surface and 1.5cm below the surface and the length of the slope uphill the glide shoes affected the snow gliding, too. In the second period (February to May) the soil temperature at the surface, the soil moisture 10cm below the surface, and the slope angle had additional influence on snow gliding. The role of the vegetation in the snow glide process is determined by the influence on the static friction coefficient caused by 20 its composition and characteristics and that moss-rich and short-stemmed canopies seem to be more interconnected with the snowpack.

One easy, convenient Away to enjoy these superb natural surroundings is undoubtedly a day spent relaxing in the open air in one of the numerous areas equipped for the purpose that visitors can find throughout the region. For some time now, our Department, in collaboration with the various local administrations, has been devoting particular attention to the creation and upkeep of these delightful, inviting areas. As you flick through these pages, you can easily appreciate the amount of hard work and dedication that has gone into offering visitors such appealing, genuine, peaceful spots where they can breathe in the scent of the forest, admire breathtaking scenery or lie down and relax by the banks of lakes and rivers – and all of this in the comfort and convenience offered by the facilities available. There are now a total of 34 specially equipped areas throughout the region, located at various altitudes, from the 350 metres of the Cignas area in Donnas village up to the 2020 m a.s.l. of the Lake Lod area in Chamois village. All of them are well equipped for visitors, offering tables, benches, water fountains, barbecues and toilets, as well as easy access for visitors with disabilities. Each of the files presented here also contains interesting basic information on the type of plant life present, the surrounding scenery and the walking trips to be enjoyed nearby. There is also information on the eleven equipped routes in the region, and a few simple yet important rules on how to make the most of the facilities available while respecting both nature and your fellow visitors.
