From its fi rst implantation in Ghana, then the Gold Coast, in the early part of the 16th century to date, English in Ghana, like in other West African countries has shown formidable resilience as the language of formal education, and a medium for cross-ethnic communication in a predominantly multilingual environment. The tensions attendant upon which language to use as a medium of instruction at the lower levels of education appear to be yielding to the logic of complementarities and bilingualism within the local language ecology. English in Ghana, as an outer circle phenomenon, has been travelling the delicate expansionist path of innovation, adaptation, and maintenance of standards over the years. The distinctive Ghanaian linguistic and cultural colouration continues to permeate the English language on all levels, including vocabulary, idiomatic usage, and pronunciation. -

Many speakers, however, speak both languages, and both are in close contact with each other, which keeps the question of the nature of their relationship on the agenda. This paper investigates 67 conversations in Nigerian English by educated speakers as they occur in the International Corpus of English, Nigeria (ice-Nigeria, Wunder et al., 2010), using the variability in copula usage as a test bed. Implicational scaling, network analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis reveal that the use of vari- ants is not randomly distributed over speakers. Particular clusters of speakers use par- ticular constellations of variants. A qualitative investigation reveals this complex situ- ation as a continuum of style, with code-switching as one of the stylistic devices, motivated by such social factors as formality, setting, participants and interpersonal relationships. It focused on “transfer of rules” errors. The study adopted a quantitative research design with a sample size of 120 students randomly selected from four schools in the study area. The questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. Frequencies, percentages and mean scores were used to analyse the data. Any item that scores above 50% was considered valid. The major findings show that the students had “Transfer of Rules” Error on Phonology; they had 54.4% incorrect responses on the realization of /θ/ and /z/. The respondents also had difficulty in the correct usage of the morpheme “er” in generating words; they had an overall mean score of 60.4% under incorrect responses. The study therefore recommended adequate and constant practice so as to overcome negative mother tongue transfer. It discusses dialect input and the survival of features, independent developments within overseas communities, including realignments of features in the dialect inputs, as well as contact phenomena when English speakers interact with those of other dialects and languages. The diagnostic value of these roots is exemplified with selected cases from around the world (Newfoundland English, Liberian English, Caribbean Englishes), which are assessed with reference to the archaic/dynamic character of individual features in new-dialect formation and language-contact scenarios. The Place of Ata in Belizean Kriol
Encoding Contrast, Inviting Disapproval: The Place of Ata in Belizean Kriol WILLIAM SALMON University of Minnesota, Duluth1 1 Introduction This paper investigates the semantics and pragmatics of the discourse marker ata in Belizean Kriol, as seen in (1). I show that ata is an adversative discourse marker similar to the Spanish discourse marker si, as described in Schwenter (1999, 2002), and that the two share much in terms of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. This is interesting, as there seems to be no English counterpart to the Kriol ata or Spanish si. (1) A: Wai yu nak yu sista?2 B: Ata da shee nak me fos! [KID] A: Why did you hit your sister? B: (But) it was she who hit me first!3 In terms of ata, I argue that it is used to convey an emphatic contrast with the immediately preceding discourse and that this contrast is a conventional implicature of the type described in Grice (1975). In addition, it is frequently used in conveying negative attitudes toward the preceding discourse. I argue that this is not a conventional aspect of ata’s meaning but that it is instead calculated in context via Gricean pragmatic reasoning as a conversational implicature. Finally, I suggest a diachronic origin for ata in the Kriol focus marker da. This present account of ata, then, covers significantly different ground than the account given in Salmon (to appear). In the next section, which follows from Salmon (to appear), I provide a brief background on the Kriol language as well as a discussion of where and how the data used in this paper were collected. -

Southern Bahamian: Transported African American Vernacular English Or Transported Gullah?
ORIGINAL ARTICLE Southern Bahamian: Transported African American Vernacular English or Transported Gullah? Stephanie Hackert University of Augsberg1 John A. Holm University of Coimbra ABSTRACT The relationship between Bahamian Creole English (BahCE) and Gullah and their historical connection with African American Vernacular English (AAVE) have long been a matter of dispute. In the controversy about the putative creole origins of AAVE, it was long thought that Gullah was the only remnant of a once much more widespread North American Plantation Creole and southern BahCE constituted a diaspora variety of the latter. If, however, as argued in the 1990s, AAVE never was a creole itself, whence the creole nature of southern BahCE? This paper examines the settlement history of the Bahamas and the American South to argue that BahCE and Gullah are indeed closely related, so closely in fact, that southern BahCE must be regarded as a diaspora variety of the latter rather than of AAVE.
