Volume 27 From the Car Cave By Ken Koehler, President Issue 8 Wow! July has turned out to be one heck of a month! August 2016 We had two very successful events -- the MMG Rally Rerun, July 9th, and a fun and well attended Night Before the 400 Mingle in Mooresville on July 23! The MMG Rally started out as any other rally, but did- n't end that way as it started a game of "Musical Miatas" within IMC. As Gary Collings called it: "It was fun to see all the dominos fall as soon as our yellow ’02 SE hit the market!" Yes, I will no longer be able to lead the second group of cars off in my "hard to miss" bright yellow Miata. But, John and Elaine Weiss can, as they are the new owners of this beautiful Miata. I'll admit to being a bit prejudiced, but I still think it's one of the best looking Miatas ever built! Aww, but I'm getting ahead of myself. How did this "musical Miatas" event start out? What’s Inside It seems senior member Alex Gray had an absolutely perfect 2010 Miata (I believe with the sport package) hidden away in his garage that he only drove on sunny days Page 2 when the temperature was 75. No, actually, I'm only making that up, but, it did only have 5032 miles on it when Sara and I drove it before the start of the MMG Rally. It “From the CAR CAVE” continued was love at first sight for me. It was the incredible copper red color with my favorite tan Membership update leather interior and matching tan soft top. After Sara and I took it for a short spin Classifieds around the park, we both decided it was definitely a deal to take advantage of. Some- . how, the words adding a second lift to our garage so we could keep our yellow SE too Page 3 stumbled out of my mouth. But a nasty look from Sara told me that wasn't going to hap- Eric & Mike’s Redux pen. So, we made arrangements with Alex to meet the next day and firm up the deal. However, we were not the only members to notice what a great deal a perfect 2010 Page 4 MX-5 with 5000 miles was. During the fabulous rally Tom Lewis recreated for us, Upcoming club events Gary Collings mentioned to me that if Sara and I decided not to buy Alex's Miata, he and Kathy would be interested. This got the wheels turning in my head as Gary and Page 5 Kathy also have a beautiful copper red '07 Miata with the retractable hard top. While The Millionth Miata MX-5 Tour Continued on page 2

Indy Miata From the Car Cave, cont. their car still looked brand new, the Collings definitely liked to travel and had driven it around Club Officers the block (or country) a few times. Still, the dominos were beginning to line up. I asked Gary to come up with a price for his RHT, and the next day after Sara and I drove their Miata, it 2016 was decided we would buy Gary and Kathy's MX-5, and they would buy Alex's. Word travels fast within IMC! Before the MMG was over, Elaine Weiss came over to talk to Sara about President how beautiful our yellow SE was. Later that evening I received an email from John saying they would be interested in our Miata if we decided to sell it. Well, low and behold, three of Ken Koehler the dominos fell and now there is a red hot MazdaSpeed Miata for sale (John and Elaine's). I [email protected] shouldn't imagine it will take too long for a rare MSM to sell. John let me drive it and it is incredibly fast! Whew, what a ride! And, that's the story behind IMC's own version of Vice-President Musical Miatas! John Lyghtel Well, getting back to the rally, we had a bunch of cars participating -- I believe the count was 24! It was a great run from Plainfield down to Nashville in Brown County. Boy, was [email protected] Nashville packed that day! Wall to wall people! Our entourage made its way through town for another leg of driving, all ending up at the Pine Room Tavern for a great lunch, and to cool Treasurer off from the blistering heat outside. It turned out to be quite a day for all who participated. Ben Hecht That morning Sara and I decided to sponsor the Night Before the 400 Mingle, and knew [email protected] exactly where we would hold it. On the way home from Nashville, we drove across to Mooresville, down SR67 to an old favorite of ours -- Observatory Road. We took a quick spin around a curvy route, then back to Mooresville to find a meeting point. We even tried it out, Secretary and it passed! We both had cones at the Dairy Queen. They were delicious -- as usual. Right Sonya Cady Continued on page 3 [email protected] 2016 Membership Update: 99 members Membership Director Welcome New Members ! “Eric & Mike” Return Engagement!

Indy Miata Club member, Eric Drumwright, again wants to invite you to stop by Blackhawk Winery in Sheridan, this Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 5th, from 2:00 to 5:00. In this return engagement, Eric will be performing with his friend, Mike Click, as part of the Vocal, Guitar Duo, “Eric & Mike”. They will be performing songs from the 50’s to today.

Blackhawk Winery is located at 28153 Ditch Rd. ,Sheridan, In. 46069

In their first outing there in June, a nice crowd of family, friends, and strangers turned out to listen to some fun music, have a little snack, sample some good wine, and just have a great time. You have a little more warning this time! So if you don’t have Labor Day plans, jump in your Miata, drive on over to Sheridan, and give Eric & Mike some friendly support! They will play outside if it’s nice; inside if it’s not. We don’t know if there will be a crowd, but you might bring a couple chairs, just in case.

From the Car Cave, continued from page 2. behind the DQ was a Lowes with a huge parking lot providing a place where we all could meet. So, the mingle was set! Very last minute, but the show would go on. The day of the Brickyard mingle turned out to be another scorcher with temps into the 90's. So, we drove our "new" Miata down to Mooresville from our home in Noblesville -- quite a trip already -- with the hardtop in the up position and the A/C blowing very cold. Of course, if it's not raining, you cannot run a rally with the top up (unless of course it's freezing outside like our first rally was this year -- still had some diehards that ran it top down though), so we all lowered our tops and let the "natural" air conditioning take over -- by driving as fast as we could! We had a very good turnout for a mingle, 11 cars plus one non-Miata (but, since it was a Mazda, it could not be considered an "SOB"). For those of you not familiar with the term SOB, it means “Some Other Brand”. Steve and Kathy Crouse's MX-5 is in the shop for an “engine refresh”, thus attending in their “OTM” (another common term). We all had a great time with every participant of Musical Miatas there. The run over Observatory Road was hampered by a full sized van turning right in front of us causing us to really cool our jets over the first two-thirds of the climb up Observatory Hill. He finally turned off so it was clear sailing right up to the point some “Local” on his riding mower decided to block the road while another "resident" towed someone's kids behind their pickup, riding another apparently powerless riding mower. We begrudgingly used the opportunity to regroup. Finally, he relinquished the road and we were able to get the hot air flowing again over our Miatas. Returning to the DQ, we quickly overran it. Our line was all the way to the back of the restaurant. We did feel very safe (or possibly threatened) as we had a "genuine" cowboy in line, complete with cowboy boots, hat and a Colt 45 holstered on his hip. Gary whispered to me "Is that legal?" To the best of my recollection, if he's got a permit, it is. But, I, for one, was not going to ask to see his permit. Still, with ice cream and sundaes in hand, we ventured back out into the heat and outdoor seating for a fun time shooting the breeze with each other. Steve told everyone about his plans for the St. Louis rally in September for some fun driving and, what he says, will be the best fireworks display we will ever see. (Maybe only surpassed by Cincinnati’s riverfront July 4th program. Editor’s note) He's reserved a bank of rooms for our club at the Drury Inn in SW St. Louis. It sounds like a blast if you can make it. You can read all the details on our website. Steve recommends not waiting too long to make your group-rate room reservations at the Inn. Well, that about wraps it up for July! We have Bob Elliott’s International/Casino rally to kick start August on the 6th. We hope to see you all there! Great motoring everyone. Since the announcement of the production of the one-millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata this past April, Mazda has been taking the vehicle on a worldwide appreciation tour to thank fans and owners for their loyalty toward making the MX-5 the best-selling roadster of all time, as well as the torchbearer of pure driving joy.

Now, the one-millionth MX-5 is coming to the U.S. on an 18-stop tour that begins at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the Monterey Motorsports Reunion from August 18-21. The car will travel the country, ending at the same venue October 1-2 for Miatas at Mazda Raceway. Along the way, thousands of loyal MX-5 owners and influential people in MX-5’s early history and development—as well as those helping write the next chapter in the MX-5 Miata’s destiny—will make the tour one to remember for a long time.

Last year was the ‘Year of the Miata’ with the launch of the all-new 2016 MX-5, but even a year into the sales of the fourth-generation roadster, that momentum has continued,” said Robert Davis, senior VP, U.S. Opera- tions, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “From winning the 2016 World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year, to the introduction of the all-new 2017 MX-5 RF, to our one-millionth Miata milestone, the MX-5 continues to symbolize the innovation and spirit that propels Mazda. With the Millionth Miata Celebration, we’re excited to give back to those who, like us, continue to believe that driving matters.”

For the entirety of the Millionth Miata Celebration Tour, the one-millionth car—a right-hand-drive Japanese- specification soft top equipped with a 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-G engine—will be traveling with the progenitor of the line, the 15th Miata ever built. A Classic Red 1990 model that made its world debut at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, this 27-year-old classic is owned by Mazda North American Operations and is part of the compa- ny’s Heritage Collection.

At each tour stop, the first 240 owners and fans will have the opportunity to sign the one-millionth MX-5, and approximately 400 attendees will receive a commemorative “Millionth Miata Celebration Tour” T-shirt at each tour stop.

September 6 Indianapolis, Indiana Tom Roush Mazda Page 6 Open Road August 2016

The MMG Rerun Rally—July 9, 2016 Nineteen Miatas, plus a couple of visitors’ Miatas, met at Hummel Park on an absolutely perfect Miata weather day. Bright sunny skies, low humidity and warm temperatures even brought out a couple people with Miatas for sale, including former member Alex Gray with his beautiful 2010 Copper Red GT with a ‘Dune’ leather interior that had just turned 5,000 miles on the way to the park. And rumor has it that Alex’s car has been sold to an Indy Miata member, which has caused a domino effect with several Miatas changing hands amongst Indy Miata Club members since the event! With the big crowd of Miatas, we split into two groups, with the larger, “spirited” group of about 12 Miatas leaving first. The second, more “relaxed” group followed shortly after and headed out on the original route from 2008. As might be expected this time of year, we did encounter one closed road which required a last minute change in the directions. So it wasn’t too terribly surprising when the first Spirited group found themselves staring at the tail lights of the Relaxed group after a wrong turn. And not just once – several times! But, hey, that’s half the fun of driving an Indy Miata route! It helps with practicing those 3-point turns, plus you get to wave at everyone who was following you just two minutes ago! Being the nice people that we are, the Relaxed group pulled to the side to let our more expeditious members pass and take the lead. The entire group made it to Nashville where the good folks at the Pine Room Tavern had their brand new back room all set up for our group, having the entire room to ourselves. Our one lone server worked her heart out and did a great job getting food and drinks out just as fast as one person could manage. I think everyone appreciated her efforts and grumbling was minimal given the fact it took longer than normal to get a plate in front of everyone. Thanks to everyone who came out to participate and make it a great day. Now, the question and challenge is… Who will be next to pull an old route out of the archives and host your own Re-Run Rally? The Night before the Brickyard 400 Mingle—July 23,2016

If you’ve read your monthly IMC newsletter from “stem to stern”, you’ve already heard a lot about the Brickyard mingle, held just over a week ago. Yes, it was a little “warm”, but air speed, and a little A/C can prevent dehydration fairly well. The drive was short, however that is what we expected when we were looking forward to desserts and conversation. In addition to the aforementioned Miata swap-group, we had numerous members who attend events regularly, and some new members who might have (or not) attended their first club event. Always glad to have you join us, guys! One of those “new” members, John & Gina, have a lovely ‘04 Strato Blue Mica, one of the more beautiful colors, in your editor’s opinion. ( I’m partial to 2nd Gens. too) I might also mention that a couple of members drove all the way from Terre Haute just for the mingle. Now, there is commit- ment! May we invite you to come over for one of the longer drives in order to pack more pleasure in your Miata outing? On June 15, we met Al Brown and Cyndee Boyvey with whom we have cruised on the roads-less-traveled for 20 years including the October 2015 gathering in San Diego. They had already driven from their home in Florida and had spent the previous week with their family in the Chicago area. Our “Indy Gator” with the help of its GPS found their “Roo Bee” (radar red) in Rochelle, IL. We launched the first afternoon of our trip across I-90 on what would become a 4,300 mile journey for us and 6,500+ miles for them in the month of June. We spent our first night in Tomah, WI. The next day (16th) we headed for Mitchell, SD, the home of the Corn Palace, which is commonly advertised as The World's Only Corn Palace, the Mitchell Corn Palace, and serves as a multi-purpose arena/facility. The Moorish Revival building is decorated with crop art; the murals and designs covering the building are made from corn and other grains. A new design is constructed each year. The Corn Palace is a popular tourist destination, visited by 200,000 to 500,000 people each year. Wall Drug Store, is a tourist attraction founded in 1931 and located in the city of Wall, SD, the unofficial home of the “jackalope“. The town draws its name from the natural “wall” mountain range in the Badlands National Park. In the 1930s the Husteads turned the standing offer of free ice water for passing motorists into a million dollar enterprise. Wall Drug is now a shopping mall consisting of a drug store, gift shop, restaurants and various other stores. Unlike a traditional shopping mall, all the stores at Wall Drug operate under a single family-owned entity instead of being individually operated. The New York Times has described Wall Drug as "a sprawling tourist attraction of international renown that takes in more than $10 million a year, and draws over two million visitors annually to their remote town." Near Wall, SD we visited an abandoned underground missile silo which once housed a single Minuteman II missile, reportedly 120 times more powerful than the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Developed in the 1950s and placed in the 1960s, a Minuteman missile could be deployed remotely with the capability to travel over the North Pole and arrive at a target in less than 30 minutes. There are no active Minuteman silos in South Dakota today, but 450 Minuteman missiles are still deployed in the upper Great Plains. Although Kathy prefers to “camp-out” at Hampton Inn, we spent two nights in Frontier Cabins in the Wall, SD area. While in the Badlands National Park and Black Hills region we visited Mount Rushmore National Me- morial and the Crazy Horse Memorial. The sculpture is carved into the face of Mount Rushmore, a granite batholith formation in the Black Hills in Keystone, SD. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The entire memorial covers 1,278.45 acres and is 5,725 feet above sea level. The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument under construction since 1948 on privately held land in the Black Hills, in Custer County, South Dakota. It depicts Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior, riding a horse and pointing into the distance. The memorial was commissioned by Henry Standing Bear, a Lakota elder, to be sculpted by Korczak Stokowski (1908-1982). With the passing of both of the parents, it is now operated by seven of their 10 children through the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, a private non-profit organization, which now includes the Indian University of North America founded by Ruth Stokowski (1926-2014). On the 5th day (19th) we resumed our journey and headed to Gillette, WY with a detour to Sturgis, SD. Perhaps one has to be riding on a Harley motorcycle to appreciate the town, which we had expected to be more of the old Western vintage. Our destination was the Devils Tower, which may be best remembered for the award-winning 1978 movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” starring Richard Dreyfuss. The movie was filmed on-site and became a breakout hit for Steven Spielberg. Devils Tower is a sacred site for Native Americans, who are recorded as not favoring its name. Many Native American legends have been passed down through time, but this version from the Kiowa Tribe seems to be the most popular.

One day a band of Indians was camped beside the river and seven small girls were playing at a distance. The region had a large bear population and a bear began to chase the girls. They ran back toward their village, but the bear was about to catch them. The girls jumped up on a rock about three feet high and began to pray to the rock, “Rock, take pity on us; Rock, save us.” The rock heard the young girls’ pleas and began to elongate itself upwards, pushing the girls higher and higher out of the bear’s reach. The bear clawed and jumped at the sides of the rock, but broke its claws and fell to the ground. The bear continued to jump at the rock until the girls were pushed up into the sky, where they are to this day, in a group of seven little stars (the Pleiades constellation). Marks from the bear’s claws still line the sides of Devils Tower.

Miata Mountain Getaway—cont.

In 1906, under the new Antiquities Act, President Teddy Roosevelt designated Devils Tower as the nation’s first national Monument, which was also called the nation’s first natural monument. Devils Tower was formed by magma which cooled underground and was later exposed after millions of years of erosion. It is scientifically described as an igneous intrusion or laccolith in the Bear Lodge Mountains near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet above sea level. We spent the sixth night (20th) in Rock Spring, WY. We don’t recall doing any sightseeing here or perhaps we just drank too much wine that evening to remember! After a short 2.5 hour drive the next day (Tuesday, the 21st) we arrived at the Chateaux Hotel Resort (elevation 8200 feet) in Park City, Utah , the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics. We immediately crossed paths with our Indy Miata friends, Wally and Pam Kienzynski and John and Sue Reba. The Utah Miata Club is an experienced host club having previously sponsored five Moab Gatherings (Miatas in Utah I through V) as well as the July 2014 gathering at Bryce Canyon (Miatas in Utah VI). The Miata Mountain Getaway at Deer Valley (VII) was equally exceptional as the Utah club celebrated its 25th year. Our next four days were packed full of the typical activities: regis- tration, goody bags, apparel and merchandise, guided tours and a group photo on Saturday at the top of the Park City Ski Mountain. On Fri- day, we traveled on the 115 mile guided tour named the Sundance/Alpine Loop Drive. When Robert Redford began filming Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, he convinced the movie director to utilize the Wasatch Mountains east of Mount Timpanogos, a ski area called Timp Haven. Redford later bought the ski resort and renamed it Sundance (perhaps from the proceeds of the movie). He then filmed most of Jerimiah Johnson in this area. We also traveled over the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway, which is rated as one of the most scenic drives in the U.S. Tom Matano, creator and chief designer of the Miata, was the featured speaker at the Saturday night awards banquet. We were among the 50+ cars fortunate enough to have Matano sign our trunk lid with his distinctive signature inscription “always inspired”. The event attracted over 100 cars from 31 clubs representing 29 States and Canada. In closing, we had often talked of traveling in the Miata to Western regions and happened across the Utah club’s website in the winter of 2012. In June 2013, some of its members were planning a Great Northwest Adventure, which was a two-week journey from Salt Lake City through Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada. Bingo … we asked to join the club and drove three days to Salt Lake City where we were welcomed by a delightful new group of Miata friends. And to top it off, in September 2014, this same group launched into a nine day journey dubbed the Great Southwest Adventure that took us from Utah through AZ (Holbrook, Safford, and Winslow AZ where we stood on the corner), NM (Alamogordo, Roswell, Carlsbad, Santa Fe) and Cortez, CO. All of this ex- plains why, in part, our trusty 2007 “Indy Gator” Miata is now approaching 100,000 miles … This may be our last trip out West, or not … Page 10 Open Road August 2016
